G30 iron shafts

Looking for some input on iron shafts for G30s. Noticed that the distance shafts that are stock are almost exactly the same as the standard CFS shafts. 1g difference in weight?? I am a 8.5 hcp looking to move toward a more forgiving iron head and wondering if any similar players have had experience to share? Does Ping still offer the CFS standard shaft in G30? Anyone playing the ZZ65 shaft in G30s?

Look at it in these terms. Ping had a new headstyle with the G30 and worked to R&D a shaft to make it perform it's best. Voila, you get the CFS Distance. Now the ZZ65 has a high bend point with stiff tip and is a lighter weight shaft. It will fly lower than the CFS and CFS Distance. Everything I've seen reinforces how good the G30 is.

I have the zz65's in my G30 irons. I feel they perform well. They play pretty stout. Pretty penetrating flight.

My understanding is the CFS and CFS Distance are the same shaft. The only difference is the "distance" are just slightly longer length for the new lengths/distance gapping on the G30s.

Z-Z65 is is very similar to CFS. The flex is right in between CFS S and X and they are constant weight, whereas CFS is descending weight. I'd get the Z-Z65 if you want a shaft that plays true to a traditional stiff designation.

You can save a fair bit of money if you get G25's too. They are very similar to the 30's only cheaper.

That sounds about right and explains the additional weight listed for the Distance CFS shaft.

In all honesty, I love the way the ZZ lites feel in my Eye 2's. Light and a nice crisp strike to them. Which shaft would be more similar the Z-Z65 or the CFS? My 6 iron SS is 84-86mph and looking for the nice forgiving club head of the G30 but don't want crazy high ballooning shots.

I'd go Z-Z65. ZZ Lites were pretty firm.

You might want to give some thought to the swingweight situation. Ping standard is D0 which is kind of light. The lofts and length of G30's is kind of wonky too.

On my G30's I built the clubs with common 1/2" loft steps instead of the oddball 5/8" steps in the long irons as specified by Ping.

I also weakened the long iron lofts 1* to the following:

club/loft/length

4 / 22 / 38.5
5 / 25 / 38
6 / 28 / 37.5
7 / 32 / 37
8 / 36 / 36.5

Didn't you know your 6 iron should be 37.63" ?
No it shouldn't.

The club length should be what I want it to be based on my fitting needs and my sensibilities.

I love Ping clubs but I think they made a mistake by going to 5/8" steps between long irons in the G30's. I'm not a fan of the fact that they made the long irons so strong too. Taylormade and Callaway keep increasing length and strengthening lofts so Ping seems compelled to keep up, but I wish they wouldn't.

Thanks for the info here. I do like the more standard 1/2" steps as well and not quite sure if I will go with the 4i yet or just do a hybrid or two and start with the 5i. On SW note, I play +1" over length so used to playing D3-4 or so with a bit heavier in the wedges. My goal overall is to try and get back to just playing good golf and having fun rather than messing with blades, soft-stepped X flexes, etc. Easier said than done! I am 45 yrs old and play to an 8HCP now. Would love to simply the game and use what helps me the most putting the ego aside. Anyone know what shaft weight the Z-Z65's are?

I hear you on the 4-iron. With the lofts getting so strong these days the 4 is stronger than the old 3-iron I use to play. I've got a 4-iron but don't carry it very often. My 5-iron is 25* and my 4 hybrid is 22* or 23* (depending on which one I put in the bag).

Z-Z65 are about 109 grams, but constant weight, so the short irons will have a little more mass to them than CFS S for example.

Agree the nonstandard loft/lengths look a little wonky on paper but they work for the club design.

I dont mind that the loft of my 4i is the same as a 3i if I hit it longer and higher than that 3i.

Same with my 5i... I dont mind one bit that it goes 7yds further than my old JPX800 Pro 5i and launches higher, and lands softer. If it helps me score better and be more accurate, it doesnt matter at all.

I will say, the distance gapping is different than my past sets though. I have about 13yds between clubs from 5i to U wedge.. I used to have 10yd gaps which made for easier math in my head :).

Its nothing i cant adjust for though, just taking some getting used to, and honestly it allowing me better control and ability to play more consistent 3/4 swings having a little more gap between clubs.

Your mileage may vary. ..

I like them quite a bit. They are a point and shoot type stick. I wouldn't change anything about them really . I ordered them cut to std. length and grips shipped on side and put new whiteout new decade mc's on them I already had in stock, gave the stock ones away. already new I didn't care for the grip playing jr.'s set

Thanks Tony. Are you using the standard CFS D shaft?
Yep, the stock CFS Distance shafts in stiff. Tried graphite too but hated graphite in the irons... felt aweful to me (wanted to see if I liked them... getting older here too and have tendonitis).

I read your comment above about getting more simple in my approach to the game.. im in the same place as you. 43yrs old, play to a 5-6 but don't see myself spending the hours practicing to improve to scratch or anything.

I didn't go into my fitting looking for GI irons... they just happen to fit me best since Im a low ball hitter.. these help increase my launch and land softer on the greens, with the added benefit of way more forgiveness..

The more I've been playing them the more I am loving them. These are still workable when in trouble but have less draw than my player improvements did. Its nice to play a straighter ball now... took me a week or two to get my alignment worked out but thats fine with me..

Ive changed my whole approach to the game this year... trying to hit it it straight.. make it simple... stopped trying to work it into the pin every shot with varying sucess.. picked up Eye2 XG sand and lob wedges and play little bump chips letting the club loft do the work instead of the occasionally sucessful flops or fancy 30yd check up spinners that I tend to thin.. making things way more fun for me.... I would rather be out playing 9 holes 5-6 days a week with my buddies than on the range or practice area alone.

Wish I had kept a more open mind in years past and given Ping and the GI series of irons more consideration...

Good luck in your simplification process.. Its working out great here and shooting some of the lowest and most consistent rounds of the summer since the switch.

Ha.. we have the sam 6i swing speed too.. the CFS Ds don't baloon on me at all, but Im not a super high spin player to begin with. Ball has a nice high flight, but still penetrating. The 110g weight of the stiff CFS distance is perfect for me. Lightweight shafts under 100g feel too light and 120-130g shafts like the DGS300s feel too stiff and boardy..

The D0 swingweight might seem too light on paper for some but I like the weight of these when actually swinging them. I tried adding some lead tape to take the 6&7i up to D1 and didnt like it at all.. D0 makes for a swing with much less effort. I would try them at D0 Stock, play with some lead tape to try different weighting and see how it feels over the course of a round, and remember you can always send them back to Ping some other time and have them adjust to whatever swingweight you land on. You might find you like the stock D0.

Also.. I will leave it up to Ping to decide the right lengths for the irons that make for the best gapping, even if its 37.3148927 to the tenth inch long. Their R&D dept is way better funded than mine.

I made the same move. Was playing AP2-714 KBS Tour Stiff at an 7hc. There is a member at our club that works at PGAss as a part time fitter. I went to see him in January with an open mind, I told him I want something that I don't have to work so hard at and wanted a higher ball flight . We tried everything so I could see and feel the results of the players vs GI. After the first meeting he had me in the G30 direction with the stock graphite in a stiff. I was not sold but the difference at the fitting was unbelievable. I went back to the club and tried a playing partners in our group pw, 7 & 5 on various holes where I new what I was hitting the AP2's for comparison, not even closer. I was hitting his G30 the same way as in the fitting, long, high and straight with ease landing soft and even backing them up. I went back to see him again and did the fitting process again with the select few I liked, same result, the G30's we spot on! I finally pulled the trigger. Since then I'm now down to a 4, won 3 tourneys already and even the member/member and Calcutta. They are so easy to hit and I actual believe in the graphic now, tempo is the key. I know there not for everybody, but in my case there awesome. I used to have those consistent misses but now, no fear grip it and rip it. The only bad thing is I'm now having to give strokes to the group but for exchange I'm taking there money more often!

I played G30s w/ ZZ65s. I hit them a bit lower than G30s w/ CFS. The ZZ65s also play a bit stiffer. I wasn't crazy about the G30 specs on paper. The benefit I see is that it makes it easy to add another hybrid or wedge by spacing the iron gapping a bit. I played a 5 iron - GW. In reality, with the stronger lofts and longer lengths, the G30 5 iron gives you the distance of most other 4 irons.

Did you specify a swingweight? If not Ping will build the clubs to D0. Nothing wrong with D0 per say, but if you are accustomed to something heavier as you stated earlier in this thread, the new clubs may feel pretty light.

Well ended up pulling the trigger on the G30s. Going to keep it simple and ordered the CFS stiff 4-UW and the Glide wedges 54ss and 60ts. Going to be a long week or so waiting for them to come in! Thanks for the help all.

Did you specify a swingweight? If not Ping will build the clubs to D0. Nothing wrong with D0 per say, but if you are accustomed to something heavier as you stated earlier in this thread, the new clubs may feel pretty light.

I did...was worried about that as well. I wanted to go a bit lighter but not that light. Specified D3

Just curious - are you certain that zz65 are constant weight? I have been trying to figure this out. I emailed Ping but did not receive a reply. I made a post several months ago on the topic and I think you replied to the effect that Zz65 were not constant weight (like (CFS is not constant weight). Maybe you learned differently in the meantime. It seems you are quite knowledgable about Ping products so I am guessing you have this figured out...

To be truthful, I'm not positive. Read some threads, including some blurb from a Ping CSR, and the reference was made to Z-Z65 being constant weight. Please contact them to be sure.

Edit: went back and found the thread about the Z-Z65 being constant weight. This info was direct from Ping. http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/topic/524729-ping-cfs-shaft-2-different-stories-from-ping/
