Moving to Phoenix, tell me about the different discount cards

So after spending the last 10 years visiting my in-laws in Scottsdale, jobs and such have finally aligned where we are making the full time move down in August. What are the options when it comes to discount cards in order to make winter golf a little more $$$ friendly? I've heard others mention Troon Cards and We-Ko-Pass before but not really sure what is the best. Do things typically run calendar year (so it'd be better to wait until January?).

Some info: 1st month or two we will be in the North Scottsdale area but will probably settle more in Chandler/Gilbert area (yes, I know those are a long way from each other). Typically would want to play 1-2 days per week (one weekday/one weekend). Like to play around so course flexibility is a plus, not really looking to go with a club or semi-private (not sure I can play enough to make it work out). Don't do much range work so that's not really a consideration.

Looking forward to the move and wanted to get a jump on it when we get down there if need be.

The wekopass is easily the best value $120 for the year gets you and up to 3 players the discounted rate and every 5 rounds you play the 6th is free.

Troon Card $800 for a 4some card not much value and takes a long time to recoup the initial investment. The plus is lots of courses to choose from

Phoenix city card worth it just to play papago the renovated maryvale and aguila it's cheap $50 the first year and $35 to renew I think

Grayhawk white tee $500 bucks but that includes 4 rounds at no charge and heavily discounted rates the other rounds. Downside always busy there lots of closures for tournaments and summer conditions usually suck.

OB sports card not familiar with it

To get the best deals you need to buy the cards as soon as they are available. For example, Wekopass is $129 when it first comes available, then goes up to something like $179 then $229.

The OB card is for a set of courses, I think around 8, include McDowell Mountain Ranch, Tegavah, gives you a discount - the discount is the highest at the course you buy the card from (by about $5 per round).

I think the Troon card (twosome or foursome) is a good deal if you have a twosome or a foursome of regulars that will use the biggest benefit of the card, which is the 2 for 1 rate one time at each Troon course. If you definitely take advantage of that, the card is a great deal, otherwise, not so much.

I used a winter rotation of Wekopa (with the Wekopass), Tegavah (OB card), Camelback Ambiente and Southern Dunes (Golfnow), with a few others sprinkled in. I seldom paid more than $100 a round, and those are all great courses. In the summer I use Golfnow and the generally lower prices to play Troon North, Grayhawk, and Boulders.

I live in gilbert now, was in tempe before that.

I think the discount cards vary greatly depending on how much you want to pay.

As one_putt mentioned, the city card is a great deal and probably saves you the most with the least initial investment.

When you buy the city card at Aguila or any phx muni other than Papago, you get a free round day of purchase(except Papago). New card is $50, $30 to renew. Wth the card, peak winter rate at Papago walking is $45 vs $80 without.

The chandler area will put you in a good location for affordable winter golf, I never paid more than $45 all winter playing the rotation of Papago, dobson ranch, and aguila with a few other deals sprinkled in here and there. So if you can make it through winter playing those(all good fun tracks) then you can venture out in the summer and play the big dogs for cheap too. Southern dunes(my fav track) has a summer 6 pack where you get 6 rounds, 6 pro v's, 6 drinks, and 20% off the grille for $130 for everything, just to show you how cheap summer golf can be.

Some of the other discount cards are kind of false advertising imo, where you pay a high price for the card, and in some cases, you can book your round cheaper than the discount card rate, wekopa being the exception.

If you do go the city card route, id wait to purchase until the big rate increase post-overseed.
If you have flexibility in yourschede to play weekdays, you can pretty much play locally right now for under $20 no problem, and $50 should get you on to wherever you want to play I think.
The cards might save a bit for winter rates but summer your best bet is teeoff.com or golfnow.

Send me a pm when you make it to town and let's play!

I have bought the OB card and is a good deal as I play the Raven quite a bit. You do need to grab those when they first come out for the best value. If I remember correctly I paid $149 and they threw in a dozen Prov1's. Think that paid for my round the day I got it as well. Can't remember. Some decent savings in peak season plus you could have points that got you a free round. I think most cards are around the same number of rounds being 5 or 6 for a free round.

In the past I also bought the Troon twosome and then the foursome. Not worth it unless you have a group of regulars that you play with and can kind of split the cost a bit. More times than not I would get paired with someone that paid the same right that I paid for the round without them owning a card. They say they will give you 15% lower than any advertised rate. I didn't want to go check out every site then go to them for the discount. I bought this one as I was playing Whirlwind several times a week. Would have been better if I traveled around to the Troon properties a little more.

My buddies up in N. Scottsdale bought the Grayhawk card. The white one. Got a lot of free rounds and steep discounts during peak. So we would pay $95 when the rack rate was $225. Two good courses.

 • 5 weeks later...

hi everyone im moving from cleveland to phoenix in september. im under 30 so i thought i could find a 36 hole course with a junior membeship but the more i read it sounds like it would be best to get 1-3 cards. i'll be living very close to jw marriott desert ridge/wildfire. do the cards sell out? id prefer to try some more courses and meet some fellow area golfers before buying the cards.

i was thinking of buying 2 cards both to 36 holes venues:
grayhawk white tee-10 min drive
we ko pass-30 min drive

some backup options would be tegevah players club (ob sports card??). i see that everyone likes the city card for papago, but it sounds like a good hike for a muni course.

any advice would be appreciated. also let me know if anyone is looking to play. what should i expect conditions/availibity/price wise for sept/oct/nov overseed season? i have found the schedule online.

im a 16 handicap but play a lot. im based in cleveland now and have played 60 rounds this year ($80 a round x 2-3 weeks would add up way too fast). maybe i need to practice some more haha.

Troon is the most expensive card, but will provide the most opportunities to play. It doesn't include range time from my understanding.

Not sure of the discount for Grayhawk, but that course get's expensive in the winter. I personally think it's over priced.

Don't discount Papago. There is a reason that everyone on here loves that course. It's only getting better as ASU becomes more involved there as they close that course. WeKoPa and Tegavah are every bit as far as Papago from the Desert Ridge area.

Really you'll want to get your rounds in as much as you can take in the Summer and then practice more in the winter.

2016 wekopass just went on sale $139 through Sept then it goes up. Same benefits as this year.

Like stated before I travel out there 2-3 times a year from Boston We Ko Pass is a no brainer. I also get the Grayhawk White Tee card as its my wifes favorite facility out there costs me 495 get four rounds with it so pretty much pays for itself and you can carry the every 5th round get on free into the next season just like the We Ko Pass

They added the Peaks Pass and it is $400 more and just seems odd...there is no value. I even spoke with them and they tried telling me that the 14 day window is worth the $400 more!! I thought at first it would provide free range time...but no, you still have to pay $25. you get a few more discounts, but nothing worth $400.

So...I will stick with the regular pass.

Im torn, I am going part time at work so I can start and finish my commercial underwriting certificate program and start a new career. My golf budget needs to be trimmed way back. I think I am going to skip the wekopass for now and most likely pick it up in April when the summer pass goes on sale for about $60. Think I am going to stick with just the city card and teeoff.com for winter. Will also try to play mid week more so I can save and get decent tee times easier

Edit: when I saw the peaks pass I was thinking they added both tonto courses to it but nope just the 14 day window and option to use range for $25.

Re Wekopass rates they vary from $35-$99 during the year and are good for you and 3 guests.

Is this too much?

We ko pass (high end)
Tegevah/ob sports travel privileges (middle of the road)
Phoenix city pass (affordable)

This would cost $250-$300 for the 3 passes but would give me lots of options.

I'd like to have 1 option that's 10-15 min drive from desert ridge.

I've hardly used golf now this year.

I might caution against buying a bunch of discount cards until you get settled and figure out the lay of the land. There are 200+ courses in the metro area. I'm not sure I would want to invest money initially until I figured out what I liked/disliked. Most of us residents seek out the munis and 2nd tier courses along with GolfNow/tee-off discounts for our winter rounds. In the summer - everything is cheap, no discount cards are needed.

My take on the discount cards:

City pass is cheap and no-brainer imo. In addition to Papago, Aguila is good and Maryvale is getting a renovation and should be interesting when it reopens.

We-Ko-Pass - The last time I checked, the We-Ko-Pass discounted rate is not significantly less than the resident rate. The advantage is with the pass you get the rate for your foursome and you earn points for free rounds. But the pass is no longer associated with OB Sports so no discounts at other courses. IMO the We-Ko-Pass is not worth it unless you plan to play there frequently or if you have non-resident friends. (or you can always whore yourself out to GolfWRX out-of-towners for free rounds or lunches !! :friends:)

Grayhawk. Raptor course is nice but I don't think I would by a pass for that amount coin. Same with Troon. The number of rounds needed to payback the card investment make it stupidly expensive.

OB Sports: IMO best value - offering discounts at all OB courses (19 in AZ), although not the very top courses, still a decent selection (Tegevah, Longbow...)
http://www.obsports.com/travel

As for private club memberships. Coming from Ohio, you will be sh*t yourself when you check out the costs. :(

TJY is pretty much spot on but a slight counterpoint to his Wekopa need to play a lot to save
My Wekopass this year and I did not play out there as much as I normally do but I managed to take very good advantage of the pass

2 referral free rounds = $200 BTW if you end up buying a Wekopass Tell them Matt Bateman sent you :friends:
2 earned free rounds $180 (one carried over from end of 2014) Another benefit, as long as you renew your card your paid rounds can carry over and if you time it right, play 4 rounds pre overseed and one after boom you've earned a free round to use during peak season.
1 more free round coming up here soon $35-$70 depending on when I use it. Maybe two if I start cramming rounds in out there again.
Savings off rack rates for each round a couple hundred more and that is with limited play this year not including what my out of state guests saved.

Just looked it up I was surprised to see only 6 paid rounds this year usually between 14-20 but then I remember 4 were free ones should be able to get 4-5 more rounds in easily before overseed starts this year to bring me back up to my normal totals

I played we ko pa in March. I was surprised to see the dormant bermuda rough for the high green fees. Imho it took away from the amazing Vistas. Troon north over seeded wall to wall. Upon reading up on the overseeding process I understand that it's actually a great playing surface. Why doesn't we ko pa overseed the rough? As I'm moving to Phx soon do I need to learn enjoy the dormant bermuda?

In short yes, dormant bermuda rough is the norm in PHX and IMO I think it is really cool and I actually prefer wekopa in the winter with dormant rough and think it is more visually appealing vs wall to wall green.
