Your Current Driver and Why?

Recommended Posts

When my Hogan 53 persimmon exploded one day (I had it forever, btw) I spent 4 -5 years trying to find a driver, tried them all, every brand and type and really did not like any. However one day I was in my shop and a new consignment of Titleist stock came in I had ordered, various stuff, irons, woods, wedges and Camerons. There was a driver on special order for someone, an assistant had taken and given to the rep. It was a 975D 7.5 deg with std Ultralite X shaft. Anyway the guy did not like it so I thought, I'll try that. It was love, kept it for years. However times move on and needed a new more up to date one. Was playing one day with a friend and he had his wife's Ping G2 driver, 10.5 and flexible shaft. I said let me see that and liked the look of it and looked into it from a personal point of view. Went to Ping and did all sorts of launch monitor and configuration testing and after dismissing about 30 heads and 20+ types of shaft, came up with what I am gaming now. The technical Rep said I was worse than the Ping Staff players at the time? Had not a clue what he meant?

Ping G2 neutral 8.5 degree Grafolloy Blue Tour X tipped 1" Lamkin Crossline Cord 2 tapes.

What a driver! Have tried everything since and nothing comes close. But then again looking at my bag, when I get something that works I keep it until it either becomes illegal or breaks.

I have been playing a G15 driver pretty consistently since it came out. My only other driver to flirt with a spot in my bag was a Cleveland ultralight at 12° since I have issues getting a decent launch angle. Saw that I could burn some airmiles on an M1 and went to try one out. It was a bust and I didn't hit it as well as my Ping. Salesman suggested an XR16 and I gained 10 yards easily. Launch angle was still low so I ended up getting a 13.5° in stiff. Not a usual setup, but I've mostly eliminated low shots and the right side of the course. I now have confidence to take shortcuts over trees and routinely get 240 carry where before it was closer to 220.

I've been using the Big Berta (2014 version), 10.5 with the stock Z50 shaft, for the last couple of seasons and I have been pretty happy with it. After seeing all the love for the XR16 at another forum I decided to give it a try and ended up buying one last week. I got the 10.5* with the stock 565 shaft. I've only had the chance to use it for three rounds but two things are very obvious and are the reasons I made the switch - forgiveness and distance. Game golf shows and increase in typical drive of 11 yards and a much improved "worst drives" in regards to distance. Fairway accuracy has remained the same as I get used to the club, the different shaft characteristics and possibly tghe need for slightly different ball positioning in my stance.

Ping G LST 10.5 KK TiNi 60x at 44.75 on -.6

Most solid, long, forgiving, shot shaping capable, fairway finding, anti-hooking driver I think I have personally ever owned ....and there have been a bunch of them! A little louder than I prefer, but all the other positives make up for that as well. I find places on the course I've never been before with this club

I'll keep this short and to the point.

Switched from BStone J40 430 to Cobra LTD Pro for the forgiveness on mishits.

The feel is just as good if not better and I've found my toe and heel misses go just as far as those hit dead center.

I know that sounds ridiculous but I myself was surprised. I'm not a huge hitter but when a toe hook and a heel push both fly 285 and end up within 5 yards of a dead center hit-I'm happy.

First Cobra club I've ever owned and I must admit I'm sold. I may have had 5-10 yards more on my other driver but the misses were worse.

Very happy I switched. 116 mph swing speed.

Cobra Amp. I used to average 275 carry with it, but now I'm averaging about the same as my 3wood. Not sure why, but I'm going to use it as an excuse to get a new one!

Really enjoying hitting this, sounds good and is long enough. Still pushing it to the right, like I do with almost every driver. If I can sort the swing issue out, It should be good for a long time.

M2 9.5* with Project X LZ70 Hand crafted 6.5 @ 45".

Tried it on the course for the first time this morning and was impressed. Such a great feeling shaft. The Loading Zone gives it a great kick through impact and makes the 6.5 very playable (my driver SS is 'only' 108).

Had a Speeder 757 Evolution Tour Spec in it before that, but it was slightly too heavy for my taste. The PX is perfect @ 71g.

Callaway BBA 816 DBD 9.5* (set at 10.5*) with an Aldila Rogue I/O 60X with the gravity core in the toe, weight up. It beat out my previous Cobra Fly-Z+ easily. I also tried every driver in my fitter's shop and the 816 came out on top. For me, it gave the highest ball speeds of any driver with the next closest being 5mph slower (Trackman verified).

The consistency in distance was a key factor for me as well. My previous driver would sometimes spin too low and the ball would fall out of the air. The 816 DBD has given me more optimal spin numbers (Trackman verified) and that has translated to more consistent numbers on the course.

On the course, it has been the longest, straightest, and most consistent set up I have ever owned. Love the look and sound of it too.

On an interesting side note, this driver was not on my radar and I found this one by surprise. It was a used driver that had barely been hit and one of the fitter's at my shop just handed it to me as I was wasting time in the shop. As luck would have it, the set up worked really well.

i play an original Ping Rapture in 10.5. it's a 10 year old driver and i hit it just as well as anything else i've tried. i like the head shape and muted sound. the weight feels perfect to me and that old aldila vs proto shaft that's in it fits me really well. doesn't hurt that i paid $50 for it either.

Cobra Fly Z +

It just goes long and streight for me.

It will be in the bag for a couple more years.

Second the Fly Z+. I struggled with it at first after switching from my Titleist 910, but once I started hitting it I really started to love it. Got rid of the stock shaft and got a stiff aldila RIP and i've gone from averaging 235 on my drives to most everything being over 250, and straight or baby fade consistently. I've had the CG in the back but i'm going to toy with flipping it forward before long.

Cobra Fly-Z+, Stock Matrix VLCT X-Stiff Shaft, 44 inches

Why?

I was looking for a newer driver, this was reviewed as one of the best in 2015, and it was only $85 used. Although I've played 2 rounds with it, and thought that I've been hitting bombs, only to see GameGolf measuring some of my drives as shockingly short.

Got this built on Monday, I hit it yesterday for the first time, the numbers are great.

I have heard a lot of positive reviews on this club on here, and I've always been a fan of the clubs Tiger puts in the bag, it just has the look I like to look down at, simple traditional look. and seems like Nike has done that for me,

I am really digging that shaft @46 in my SubZero. I went it to get it regripped yesterday, could not resist the matching Pure Pro grip....

Currently gaming a 915 D2 10.5 w/ Tour AD-DI 6X shaft. This is the perfect shaft for my swing and I got the 915 D2 head for $190 and it was in nearly perfect condition. I have only played 18 with it but I'm liking what I'm seeing so far. Basically, I'm gaming it because the classified section here is the devil.

I have an 815 BBA in the garage just in case this starts acting up.

TM R580XD....it's a Bomber.

Straight as an Arrow or 15 yards either way when needed.

TM R580XD for me. When ever I play with someone new they always ask me why I play such an "old" driver. By the end of the round most are trying to buy it off of me. Great club.
