pga irons

I've been playing with these irons, and I really like them.

When I posted a question about them in my intro I didn't know much about them, but I have found some information since then. They are from 1983, at least one person says that they're on par with most of the recent irons.

I'm wondering if I would benefit from trying a more recent set, or if iron technology really hasn't improved as much as the drivers have? I've bought a few more iron sets on eBay, I got drunk for my birthday, but I don't know how they stack up yet.

Does anybody have experience with these?

Do I have something good here?

You have a traditional size cavity back design set which is actually better than the currently trendy over sized head designs.

I've seen them before. Back in the late 80's when I worked the bag room of a private club.

It's like driving a car from 1983. Will they get you down the road? Sure. Are cars better now, you bet.

I'll go ahead and say it.

Is this one of the more odd and funny threads you've seen lately? (join date, avatar, topic, you name it)

Ahh, you like my avatar? It's a model head that I made from wax, I'm an embalmer.

The other sets that I have on the way are a Palm Springs BeCu diamond set, and a newer Rawlings MVP set. I'll see how I hit with them before switching from these. The only problem with the PGA ones are that they might be a little too short for me, so I'm going to try these other sets and see if they fit me better.

I evaded the Rawlings set, thankfully.

I'm sorry if I scared the golfers.
I'm nostalgic about my wax face, its deteriorated since then... I always use it for forums, at least to introduce myself in a way that people tend to remember.

The PGA irons are my usual set. I'm happy with them. I did just get done practicing with my new BeCu's and they feel great. I might leave the pga's at home and try the new ones on the next round.

What brand are the PGA's? Was it a special edition? I'd like to know more about them.

They were made by Tommy Armour. If memory serves me correct. Northwestern, Tommy Armour and PGA irons were all made by the same parent company. Funny I started playing golf in 1974. I putted within a 100 yards for quite some time because I couldn't chip or pitch at all.
I was just lucky. I went with a group of men at my church when I was 25 to pick up some tips. I shot 144. I remember making a 9 on the first hole and a 10 on the second one, and stopping and buying another dozen golf balls at the turn.
I worked for Lowe's and had to entertain contractors to get business.
I went into the proshop to buy a set of irons. I looked on the wall and it was a set of Ben Hogan PC with stiff shaft. I bought 1 iron thru E wedge. And hit thousands of balls with them in the next 6 years.
There is not one thing wrong with hitting older clubs. If you hit the center of the clubface. Then your club could have been made in 1952 and it would not matter. This crap of I hit a 7 iron 180 yards is just crap. It is total ego and vanity. IF you can write 4's and 5's and the occasional 3 on your card. Then enjoy the game.
ITS ALL ABOUT WHAT YOU SCORE< not how you look.
Beware the old guy with old clubs with new grips.

Hi Ripper911. Just like you, I have a set and keep getting told to flog them and get a new set of irons with the new technology. My answer to them is that, 'unless you are a top golfer, it's the turkey that swings the club, not the club.' Last week I shot 88 and today a 73. Can't see how the clubs changed that much over the week.

Thanks XYB34A for the information. I was also wondering which company made the clubs.

If you have no ego, then why would it matter what someone else hits?
