TaylorMade Burner Tour Irons (1996)

So I stopped by my local Goodwill and found these irons from 3I-PW with "Taylor Made Precision Rifle S-90" steel shafts and worn but somewhat usable Titleist Corded Golf Pride grips. They are in great shape. You can tell they have been used but I would say they are in very good condition.

All said and done, using my 20% off coupon, I walked outta there with a backup set of irons for $20.29. Heck Yeah!

They are old, but I had been looking for a backup set just in case something ever happened to my MP-67s and I didn't really want to spend money on a backup set.....so for 20 bucks I was pretty pumped to find these.

Now I just want to learn a bit more about these irons. Snow is on the ground and I won't be able to hit them for a while!

Has anybody here played them? What are your opinions of them? Would they play alright even though they are 20 years old? Any info anybody knows on these things? Memories welcome...

It is kind of fun because I was 8 or 9 years old when these things came out and i remember being way into golf back then...reading though Golf Digests, looking at all of the golf clubs that I wanted but knew I would never have, hitting my Dad's bucket of golf balls into the neighbor's woods with my Salvation Army mixed set of golf clubs....those were the days.

Thanks!

I used to have a set of them, my first 'proper' set of irons. Got them in early 1999 through to 2010. Great set of irons and took a long time to find anything to replace them.

Won me 3 Club Championships and a course record so can't be too shabby. Only got rid of them when I moved from England to the US last year!

Not having played them, I can't offer much in that arena. But, I can offer two other things, which you may not need (lol)...

First, the S-90 shafts should be 6.0 Rifles. That was the general standard in that time for TM clubs.

Second, the standard specs, which I'm copying from GolfClubSpec.com. Lie angle starts at 56° for the 1 iron and is 1° upright for each club, to a 64° 9 iron. PW is also 64°. 5 iron is 37½", with ½" up and down from there. Lofts are 16 / 19 / 22 / 25 / 28 / 32 / 36 / 40 / 44½ / 49 for 1i thru PW.

The Ever Changing Bag!  A lot of mixing and matching
Driver: TM 300 Mini 11.5*, 43.5", Phenom NL 60X -or- Cobra SpeedZone, ProtoPype 80S, 43.5"

I remember the old golf digest witb and Els, Lehman, O'Meara all playing them but I played the same irons but the oversize model for my first few years in highschool

I know for sure O'Meara won his 2 majors with those clubs.

10.5 deg Titleist 905R with stock UST Proforce V2 Shaft (Stiff flex)
Titleist 990 (3-PW) with stock Dynamic Gold in S300
Taylormade V-Steel 5W & 3W with Grafalloy Prolaunch Red shafts (Regular Flex)
2011 Adams Tom Watson signature wedges in 52 and 56 degrees with stock steel shafts (Player's Grind)
Rife Island Series Aruba Blade Putter

"Loft for loft, length for length, and shaft for shaft, the ball will go the same distance when hit on the sweet spot regardless how old the iron."

I still have a set , 1iron thru PW.....mine came with the TS 100 graphite Bubble shafts.... when I started having hand problems I reshafted them with Apache 40i graphite.... still have the the Bubble shafts bundled up in permanent  retirement......not much you can do with .400" tip graphites....

Out of town this week , but I will post some pics, when I get home..

Wow I feel some kinda way now. Wifey gifted me a set of Callaway irons that I've played maybe 3 rounds with and can't wait to really play with this summer. But, honestly I learned and still played with this TaylorMade set from '96 up until last summer. I bought them used in 2000 and played in spurts over the years. Now I have to figure out what I'm going to do with my "beloved" TaylorMade Burner set with the T2 driver.
