Phoenix area golf.

Recommended Posts

So I got coerced by my boss into taking a trip to Phoenix with him to play some golf. (I know pull my arm right? Haha). However his wife has set a budget for him which is unfortunate because I proposed some cheaper trips to begin with. This is where y'all come in. I'm looking for some great, challenging tracks that's won't break the bank. Like are there any courses rated between 73.5-74 that aren't 200 bucks?

Huh? What does the rating have to do with the price?

Whatever...go play Papago and Southern Dunes from the tips then.

I know some good ones but they are 73.4 so they are out

You guys are so welcoming lol

You have to admit having a specific rating number (especially with as narrow a gap as a half stroke) is certainly an oddity and I challenge you to name another time somebody has used that criteria when asking for help from us. I mean the blues at Southern Dunes are 72.4, but the blacks are 75.1 and the tips 76.2 so none of the tees fit in his oddly narrow window...although the course would certainly fit the bill. Papago jumps from 72 on the blues to 75 on the blacks. Just saying it is a weird way to ask the question he seems to be asking.

That being said, we do need more info like you asked for. The going rates for prebooking quality tracks in the high season can get pricey. How about provide us with a total you want to spend on X rounds over X days (and the rough dates) and then let us make a suggested trip list for you?

Go play Las Sendas and tee it up behind the tips in the desert every hole. I'm sure the USGA would rate that above 74.

didn't Las Sendas used to have the highest slope rating in the state at 144? I know the rating is still low 73.1, but that is on a par 71 track. which begs the question is the 73.5 - 74 number on a par 72? :)

You are right BO...that was wrong of us. Next time we will welcome folks first. Then respond to vacuous questions/requests, such as:

  1. HC listed as "ok" looking for very high rated courses,
  2. Equating course rating to price,
  3. Setting a .5 variance in course rating as their criteria for choosing a course
  4. Not providing any other details that are more important to the final decision

How about real time course conditions.

In all seriousness OP we'll be happy to give good advice with some more info.

ForeLife should do a budget golf trip planner thread to be pinned with my big travel thread.

Put those two on the trip schedule play them from the back tees and I'll pay just for the comedic aspect! That is unless you are in Ping engineering department with the guy I played with a while back.....

O gawd. I meant in the ballpark of that rating and should have been more general. I didn't mean to come across like that, but after all it is Wrx and I understand sometimes things come across in the wrong ways, my apologies. My bosses budget is 500 bucks and he's the type of guy that will go on golf now and be happy with the cheapest course he could find. He also thinks we'll be able to play 36 a day on that budget. Any help is appreciated, sorry for coming across like an arse, I just know if I leave him in charge to choose I won't be playing the caliber of courses that the Phoenix area has to offer.

36 is tough in Jan frost delays and early sunsets.

Coursewise

Maryvale

Aguila

Papago GN hotdeal or teeoff.com

Splurge rounds 70-100

Southern Dunes

Camelback Ambiente

Should be able to play all those for around $400 if you book right.

I didn't look at course ratings but they all should be about 1 stroke over par or more from back tees.

I'd play the tips on a course that hosts a leg of q school anyday! Not saying I could post a number but it's pretty nice to get a perspective on just how good those guys are!

You mentioned trying to play 36... while i agree that is hard to do this time of year. Southern dunes has a special right now for 36 holes with breakfast included for $200.

That is impossible to beat for quality.

Right on. Another question i have is what are your thoughts on tpc Scottsdale? Boss man is interested in that but it's a pretty hefty greens fee. It does seem like he'll break his budget to play that though because the hole hosts a PGA tour event thing. We are going to play southern dunes though. I appreciate the recommendations!!!

Tpc stadium course... great 4 hole finish tacked onto an otherwise meh golf course. If I was going to go over budget for a track it would be a different one, but I get the attraction.

Champions course, fun layout in great condition at a good price.

3 years ago i would have agreed with the stadium assessment but the reno really made the front 9 much more interesting especially off the tee.

But the dates op will be here stadium might be closed for final WM Open prep.

If it's open now is the time to play it. Full tourney condition stands all set up

Trust one_putts's opinion over mine on the stadium course, I haven't played it since the reno.

I love playing courses that have a tour event just do I understand what it is really like when I watch them play it. It is just that after doing it once the attraction is gone if i didnt love the course.

Champions course - just after overseed, it was the second worst course mosquito experience of my life, only behind Cranston Park on Key Biscayne, FL.
