Used my new Anser for my first round today. I'm in love. Had my best round of putting in 5 years. I think it has more to do with going back to a Newport/Anser style putter than anything else. I putted with this style as a kid and I used to be money from short distance. About 5 years ago I started messing around with weird putters, center shaft, belly, mallets, all sorts of stuff.

Short review, the finish to me is beautiful, I can't look at this putter enough. May not be for everybody but I love it. The best part about this putter is the unique metallic sound it makes when you strike it perfectly, very different from the anser 2 which sounds and feels more like a click. Long story short I think I may have solved my putter hoeing disease. I've been through 50 putters over the last 5 years. This thing WILL NOT leave my bag for a long time.

I relented to a health dose of nostalgia, and I'm pleased I did. The Newport 2 is exactly what I want in a putter. I like the finish, the tri sole, the appearance at address, and the feel coming off the face. I anticipate selling a few putters based upon my initial impressions.

This is exactly how I feel. This putter just feels so damn good, no matter where you hit it on the face. And the roll is just so true. I am not as "gaga" over the finish though. I still think I am going to get Ping to put Starshot on it during the off season.

The one thing that I am still getting used to is the lighter weight of the putter. I tend to prefer a heavier putter, and was thinking about putting some lead tape on the sole. Will that effect the way it sounds? I don't think it will as long as I do not cover up the sound slot, but I am not sure.

I found an interesting picture:

Has anyone else seen any examples of these new head covers? I asked the person who posted the picture, and they said the putter came with that head cover.

Possibly a Japaneese release? I'm bummed that Ping did not include these head covers with the pre-order shipments. They look pretty sweet.

Mine only came with the generic black Ping headcover. I ordered it from TGW. 4gk3CmS.png

But who cares... my Anser TR 1966 rolls the ball like a video game! Impressive! It's MONEY. lmpqptc.png

So...stop pestering an old man. Seriously, WTF on my part. The Anser 2 1966 is so good, I'm selling a Newport 2 Timeless. Any takers?? :)

I finally gave in and picked up a 1966 Anser. I know the gold pvd is a little corny but it gives it some character. Not to mention, in the sea of putters on the rack at my local store the golden Anser really stood out. Initial results on the green at the store and at home are promising. First putter for me in a long time with no sightline. Looking forward to getting it out on the course this weekend.

Btw, I nicked my anser that has a starshot finish on it and I noticed it does have the gold finish underneath it. So it's not just the gold finish sandblasted off. It's a completely different finish added on top of it. You can also tell because they don't add the finish over the serial number on the face.

And I have a hole in my soul from already messing up the finish.

Sigh.

That's interesting. Could you throw some pics up? I would like to see what that looks like.

I had some suspicions about that. The new precision milled putters by Ping have the light and dark finishes... and the dark finish on those looks like the "starshot" versions of the TR 1966. I'm wondering if it's a dark PVD type finish.

Based on a few rounds, I'm liking the Anser 2 a little more than the Anser. Both very nice though, and I foresee the illogical struggle before every round deciding if I switch one out for the other.

I have a "starshot" anser as well. Now that you say that I remember my build sheet saying something like "starshot not available on anser, only anser 2"

Demo'd the Anser the other day...nice but nowhere near as nice as my BeCu Anser 4 or BeNi Anser 2. I'll stick with the old schools.

I recently had a Starshot Anser for a brief few days. Thing of beauty as far as appearance, but frankly I hated the feel and results- sold that one quick. Also tried the Anser 2 briefly, liked the feel better than the Anser, but also didn't work for me. Wanted to like them as I love the overall look (simple, lack of stamping, etc.).

If you change the stock Ping grip will it change the weight and feel of the putter? Going to a standard vs the midsIze.

I put a standard PingMan grip on and to me it feels better but that's because I like the standard grip. I'm sure the swing weight changes a bit but to me it negligible. Beside, you'll get used to it.

Wow. I have never loved a putter so much. I am so damn good with this thing. I have never made so many 15+ footers in my life during multiple rounds. I had 5 just today. The one negative I am seeing though is that the finish is starting to wear off on the heel of the putter already. My guess is from putting the cover on and off. Not a huge deal, because I am going to have starshot put on it over the winter.
