Sorry for thread jacking....I had a set of X31's in the '70's and I loved them. Enough so that I'm looking for some, but I'm not sure when they were made. What made them different is that, while forged, they had a cavity that diminished in size from the longer to the 7 iron and then became a classic looking blade from 8 iron down to pitching wedge. I've searched and while I can find lots of X31's, I cannot seem to find these ones. Any of you guys know the clubs I'm talking about?

These?

Must have been a bear to make these at that time because they only made them for one year, which would account for their rarity.

I always chuckle when people refer to the Hogan Edge as the first cavity back forging as the X-31 Plus predated the Edge by about fifteen years. And of course Karsten milled cavities into forgings years before the X-31 Plus.

I have a set of these if you might be interested in them. I used them a few years ago while I was waiting for my custom set of fg tours to come in. I really liked them. I put new grips on them and cleaned them up. They have been boxed up for about 4-5 years, with x-31plus metal woods with a found e wood the size of a quarter. :)

Back in 86 I was living in Va.Beach, VA. I had just sold a complete set of Pal er standards! Bag and all to a fellow I worked with. I found a few X31 irons in a barrel at Kempsville Greens a neighborhood nine hole course. Eight ironshaft was broken so we put the two iron shaft in it. They had The black button on the toe. Played with t(em till 2003. Just today finiisned cleaning up a set I bought at goodwill for. 1.99 per club. 2 thru 8 and pitching wedge. Missing nine iron.

SOS pads used enthusiastically and they look super. A set of new grips and I’m in business.

If these are the ones your talking about I picked up a set of them, 2-9 for $10 at a thrift store in Jacksonville this summer. I believe that they are 1972-73. I had been hoping to find some version of these. They are supposedly a "game improvement" blade and I was curious. They still need new grips so I haven't taken them out yet.

Check out this thread. Pictures start at Post Number 4. These irons pre-date the first cast Karsten 1s, not many were made and they are worth a small fortune today.

Curious about the Hogan Radials. Like to audition a 4i and 5i this year. On the scrounging radar.

I'm out of the country for a month, but if I'm not mistaken, I have a loose radial 5 iron head somewhere I could try to find. I believe I also have an apex 4 shaft for it but I'm less sure about that.

I'm gonna go "off the board" and suggest some of the old Powerbilt clubs. They had several like the Levelume and the Citation that had some funky sole designs. And I'm sure those aren't commanding high prices these days.

Cobra F9 Driver 10.5 UST ProForce V2 HL 5F4 46"

Tour Edge Exotic EXS 220 16.5* UST ProForce V2 HL 6F4 44"

Cobra Amp Cell 5-7 fairway (set to 20*) Fujikura Fuel 60g S 43"

Maltby TS3 4-P Elevate MPH 95 +1"

Cleveland 588 RTX 2.0 50*, 54* & 58* Apollo Matchflex Wedge 36.25"

Cleveland Classic Collection #10 35"

Spalding Elite Plus irons from about 1980. Cast, but feel same as forged blades to me. "Fatter" sole blades that maybe have a little bit of forgiveness without the harshness of some thinner soled blades. Discovered my set at a Goodwill, and I enjoy hitting them.

Made my first hole in one in 1982 with an Elite Plus "11 iron," which was a 54 degree pitching wedge. The ball was an orange Golden Ram x-out, of all things.

I never had a full set of the Elite Plus. Just that wedge.

They were cast, but they were chrome plated as well. Spalding did that with a number of their cast stainless irons.
