What do you do when your game falls apart?

Spot on. The brain plays golf, the subconscious understands the swing better than we do, and the body just goes along for the ride.

Well that's my excuse when I hit the ground a foot in front of the ball.

We have been talking about this in the 'no swing thoughts' thread, and one of my more cynical thoughts was, ok, now you have somehow handed your swing off to your subconscious, but what if your subconscious also sucks?

Then you're probably stuffed and you subconsciously hate the game - take up tabletennis.. I cured a bad hook by aiming to the left - ball refused to go that way - scary. Is it possible to harness the mind as MountainGoat says? possibly. There have been a few shots in my game that would be classed impossible for someone of my skill level but they happened and I'm not a great believer in luck.

I have lately been returning more to tennis; I played in HS, and started playing a lot about 10 yrs ago, got pretty good again (5.0 level), but then golf wiped that off the map as my GF's kids started getting involved in HS golf with hopes of scholarships. But now I'm getting back to T, where as we have discussed the time factor forces the SC to engage full time. There is still a 'head game' in tennis, but totally different from the golf head game..

Oh, and yeah, I'm a pretty good ping pong player too..

Me too, I played TT at club competition level and badminton too. I found a couple of hard games of TT before getting on the badminton court sped up reaction time in the other game, gave me an edge.

I love the quick reaction of TT. In spite of that there is still thought in TT. It's like: thought-hit, thought-hit,there's no time to think how to hit a top spin deep right, you just do it. That's why I think golf is the most difficult of games compared with the reactionary sports.

It's all about consistency - those who have it consistently win games. A good example is Hideki Matsuyama

I just recovered from full ACL reconstruction of my right (I'm a right) knee. Hovered around a 12 before.

Really been struggling with consistent contact. I recently started experimenting with an open stance for all shots (former baseball player).

For whatever reason my contact has been solid, but the best part is not the contact. It's actually that I can relax. The feeling of swinging as hard as I can weather I try to or not has disappeared.

Guessing it was my arms and hips miss matching that was causing that "kill the ball" style swing from the top.

Anyway moving the ball back (Ernie Els advice) and opening the hips has brought my game back to center (my tip to myself).

Sand game and putting....that's another story.

I've been noticing as I'm progressing that a lot of my game "falling apart" has to do with my speed and tempo. When S**t hits the fan, I try to slow down, take my time through my swing, and just say "F**k it, I paid to get out here and have fun."

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Oh, and I put the whisky down, and drink beer instead,

My game fell off the planet and then I just pieced it together starting with the tee shot then scoring clubs, I felt tee ball first and all will fall in place.

It did fall in place... so I would find a driver that suits you and a shaft do the same for the 3w.

Look at the great tour stars that fell off the planet they failed to hit the tee shot (Woods, Duval ) they lost it !!

I lost it once in an amateur event when someone in our group shot 118 and should have been 130 easily. It was the toughest round I had ever played for competitive golf and the dude only hit 4I off the tee and could not get it in the air! I had to shoot a great back nine to break 90 !!

I asked him where he played out of and then he got mad at me because I was wondering how he got in the tournament?

When my game falls apart, I get out my sand wedge and start hitting 10 yard pitches consistently straight until I dial in the feel of the arm swing. Once those get consistently good, move up to full wedges and short irons. This always syncs my arms and body back up and allows me to get back on track. Chipping on the tee box while waiting sometimes even does it mid round.

I keep trying to play subconsciously. I don't change what I'm doing because I hit a few bad shots. Bad golf is part of the game. I deal with it. I know if I shoot 76 one day, the next I'll shoot 67. Golf is somewhat random, and bad golf is part of the deal. Play subconsciously, and all should be fine.

I often find that a bad round, only became a bad round because I beat myself up over one bad shot. I call myself all kinds of stuff with profanity, that I wouldn't dare say to anyone else.

So, being kind to myself is the key.

While the aim of a round is to limit mistakes, a perfect round is rare. And if you do have the perfect round, the chances of repeating it, are even more so. Go look up someone who's shot under 60 three times in their career.

gotta shut it down for a week or so when that happens. I always find less range time helpful. take a week off then just play... outside if possible. focus on target not the swing. the game is hard, just acknowledge it... can't be perfect

Good advice. Before each round I ask my buddie (s) "If I have a perfect round, kick me"

Well, being/becoming aware is an unfounded assumption rife throughout a thread about losing control.

You see folks spiral off for rather pronounced periods. As a golfer careens about a series of holes or whole rounds, even months of play, great comedy of a tragic sort can be witnessed most amusingly, in a private cruel way. He has a friend who can get close to the edge of unhinged. While there's nothing to be done - who wants to stop a show? Still, you feel for someone who hurts so much over something so vexing as golf. JP has to laugh, at him, maybe you.

It is a silly, serious game.
