Just got the official email from Oban on pricing. They will be $75 each.

That's... a lot.

I love the oban kiyoshi white and purple, but I can't imagine spending $75 on a single steel shaft. I can get a full set of used KBS Tour shafts for that kind of money.

Maybe the actual price will be less? Maybe they will work with companies to make it a cheaper option when you buy new?

Yes, I hope some companies will offer them as custom options. I could accept to pay 25-30€ extra per club, but not more. Anyhow, Mizuno will not include them in their options, and I am a Mizuno fan boy...

Just got my demos in. The labeling for these is stickers, not the heat transfer like Nippon. Did a quick profile on these and they are kind of close to a DG Pro with a softer mid/tip section. I will build these up today and hit them tomorrow and post again.

Thank you!

Can't wait to hear more.

Well, that took a lot longer than I thought it would. My apologies for not posting a review of these shafts until now. Busy busy!

The feel of these are very similar to the Nippon Modus 3 Tour 130's, just lighter. I usually like a very stiff tip/soft butt shaft, so these were very hard for me to hit. I have a quick tempo with a hard release. Players with a smoother tempo and release will probably like these a lot, but for the price$$$ ???

Also, I don't like the shaft band sticker. because of all the steps in the shaft, half of the sticker ended up under the grip because it was the only flat place to put it. These are being made by Shimada in Japan. They were nice and round on the table roll test too. Sorry I don't have more info to post.

I just tried these today and they felt fantastic. Tried it with the MP5 head. I'm a C-Taper guy, so not sure how they compare from a technical standpoint? Shaft expert thoughts? Though they were extremely smooth and I was crushing them on the trackman.

Also tried the PX LZ shaft with the MP5 and was surprised that I didn't like it at all.

Any new thoughts on these Obans? I understand they are "constant weight." Curious As to how this impacts club builds?

Update?

Possibly ordering a set, but what bothers me is that I found out they are flighted shafts. I tried the DG Pros which are flighted and I didn't like them...so I'm hesitant to buy them now. I did demo a 6 iron though at and out door range and really liked it. Very consistent ball flight.

How did they compare to the project X lz? How do they compare to the c taper? I assume you use original c taper and not the c taper lite?

I'd be surprised if they are similar to the c taper. If it goes you the c taper is a great shaft, but it doesn't fit a lot of people like the stock shafts you often see like the DG s300 or kbs tour.

Don't have the Obans yet, just ordered them..maybe a week or so before they are built. Yes, I've been playing the regular CTaper since they came out. I only hit the PX LZ for about 10 balls and didnt seem to get along with it.

Wow, didn't realize the pics come out so small from my phone.... here they are again....

Hit a few balls with them yesterday....and brought the 8-PW with me in my semi-final CC match. Hit a beauty 8 iron to about 9 feet on the 3rd hole.

With very little time on them thus far, the two words that stand out to me are: Easy and Consistent. The ball flight is definitely higher than my Ctapers produce, but they seem to hold their lines extremely well. Overall, they feel a fair amount lighter in total weight compared to my Ctaper setups, which I'm not sure what that will mean in terms of total performance. I may take them into my CC final next weekend, but I'm not sure yet.....

Curious what your swing speed is with the 6 iron or driver, what flex did you go with? Does the tip seem stable? Thanks!

My 6 iron speed is about 95 and my driver speed is about 115. I actually went with the stiff plus flex because i seemed to have enjoyed the stiff flex demo so much. The tip stability was actually really, really surprising to me. I figured the stiff flex demo was going to be all over the planet and it wasn't at all. With my S+ Ctapers in the MP68s, although it doesn't necessarily feel like it in the moment, they take "work" to produce. These Obans are so easy and smooth, my swing requires significantly less effort it seems. The ball flight is quite high, but the ball holds its line extremely well. I'm excited to keep messing with them.

That is . . . nuts.

I paid that, installed. I figure that is fairly close to what any shaft runs installed.

I don't know where you get your shafts installed but a Modus3 125 costs ~$50 installed by me (~$40 for shaft, $10 for installation). That's about as high as it gets for me. Even a SteelFiber doesn't cost $75.

Played my first full round yesterday with these. I wasn't swinging well in general and it was quite windy, but I will say that these shafts are really nice. The thing I like about them most so far is how I'm able to flight them quite easily. Yesterday I hit a low 9 iron into a back pin to about 10 feet, which wasn't necessarily spectacular, but the flight of the ball was great. The shafts seem very consistent and smooth. Compared to my CTapers, they are very easy to manage and require generally less total effort to get to perform. They also appear to be fairly long in distance.

DNICe that is a killer set up! How are you liking the new grips...what did you change from? As a long time CTaper player I've had my eyes on these Obans for a little while to try. Curious about weight on the S and S+? Edit...115 grams. Looked it up.

I got the S+ Obans. Yes, 115 constant weight. They do flight the ball quite high but they also hold their line exceptionally well. I actually had my lofts strengthened one degree just to help bring the launch down a touch. I didn't bend them more because I didn't want the heads to show more offset. I have my 36 hole CC final this weekend and I'm fairly confident that the 9- 5 iron are coming with. Don't think I'll bring the wedge, only because i'm not super comfortable with the Mp5 head yet.

The new Lamkin grips are really pretty nice. I've used the Zcords for a while now and honestly, i like the new Lamkins. I must be partial to "Z" grips or something. At the start i wasn't so sure about the Lamkins, as the lower hand feel is softer than I'm used to.

I didn't even know these existed when I got fit for my irons but man am I glad they put me in them! During my fitting, there was a distinct difference when I hit a ball with the Oban in comparison to the other shafts I was hitting.

I tested the X Seven, DGTI X100, KBS C-Taper 130x, and the Oban CT-115. The peak height was very similar with them all. Spin was lowest with Oban. Ball speed was highest with Oban. I was coming from Miura Small Blades with Accra 110i shafts.

I had 2 requirements. I wanted to go back to steel shafts and more forgiveness. I originally went in for PXG 0311T but the #'s on the Oban shafts allowed me to fit into the 0311 (set at 0311T lofts) without fear of sky balls and shots spinning off the map. (I'm a high ball hitter regardless but some spinners go into orbit.)

I've only played about 27 holes so far with them but as much as I love my PXG irons and the way they feel, I give a lot of credit to the Obans. I don't quite understand the way they are built but I'm not going to argue the tech behind it. If you get a chance, you have to give them a try.
