I probably have more questions than answers, but here goes. I bought a set of laminated speed slot woods, 1,3,4,5, about 15 years ago at a Second Swing store in my area that has since gone out of business. I recall paying $8.49 for the set, including tax. My clubs are in extremely good condition; however, the laminated faces of the 4 woods have been compressed a little bit on both sides of the insert. The fellow that owned them previously must have been a gorilla. The crown and the soles of all the woods look like new. No number 504 or anything except Speed Slot on the slot. The driver has the word "Producer" on the side opposite the face. The other woods have no writing where Producer is located.

AMF Ben Hogan Red Apex "3" labels are on the shafts. As I said, the overall appearance of the set is beautiful, just a slight bit of compression on the faces. The driver has a serial number, L 58232. The L, standing for lefty club. The others have no numbers.

Ben Hogan clubs were also made in persimmon, cannot tell in your photo what yours are. Looking at them, it is positively amazing the condition of my woods, except for the minor compression. The guy that owned them must have been an accomplished golfer, to have caused such face wear, but the rest of the club almost immaculate.

I estimated the vintage to be around 1980, don't know for sure.

Enjoy your clubs.

The Golfworks Price Guide says these are from 1973. 504 is the model number.

Thanks, the guy I got them from said his father bought them in 71. I am sure he just didn't remember correctly that was a long time ago.

Any idea on the lofts?

Sorry, I don't have any information on the lofts.

The 1978 Apex woods were 10.5/15.5/18.5/21.5 for Driver/3/4/5 respectively according to Ralph Maltby's repair book from the early 80s, but that's the closest thing I have.

Perhaps someone in your area could measure them for you.

"You think we play the same stuff you do?"

Wriggles-

The Ben Hogan Golf Company in the US did not offer Left handed Persimmon wood models ....just laminated woods only.

The Slazenger UK Division of Ben Hogan Golf offered LH persimmon woods, but these were rare.

MacGregor offered "Ben Hogan" LH signature persimmon woods from 1939 to 1953......some are quite rare.

Thanks, I wasn't aware persimmons were not available to lefties. I'm going to bag my woods this year. I had completely forgotten about them until this thread. They were just put away in an old leather staff bag with red and white pom pom covers from that era. I did regrip them a couple years ago, though.

Play well!

It may have had something to do with how Ben Hogan severed ties with MacGregor and not owning the "signature" stamps.

MacGregor made a few LH Ben Hogan persimmon woods... BAPs too.

The Producer was 1975-1978.
