The 6 Hybrid

Recommended Posts

I have to say that right now the Cally Razr XF 6i is winning the winter battle against the Adams a12 proto 28*. (Even after tossing the old faithful NVS105x shaft in the Adams)

I think the black coloring may help mask the size of the iron. The offset is not bugging me at all

It's easier to hit cuts with this SGI six iron. Anyways, it was a good $20 spend

Does anyone know of Monty still plays this set of irons?

The real test will be this summer off of hard fairway lies, at that point my blade 6 iron may go back into rotation

No he moved to a set of JDM Legacys. But he used the XFs for a long time.

A few comments:

I was one of the last to get on the hybrid train. Used to have to use them in steel shafts and hit some world class hooks with my 3h. Then I moved to a 7w. But now my swing is shallower and more from the inside and hybrids are just plain FUN & EASY (and less hook biased with heavier shafts for me anyways!

I recall Dana Quigley had a 6h when he was a top senior player. Obee beat Phil Mickelson straight up, and he carries a 6h, stud muffin right there. Soooo ...

I am just back from 7 days in Orlando / Myrtle Beach (followed by a detox in Eleuthera Bahamas) and I can't stop thinking about one thing .. How freakin' good I hit my 5h in MB!!

This Cally Apex 5h - with a NVS 105x shaft in it - is like cheating for me. I had many instances where I would hit MUCH better shots with my 5h vs my 7i. I was hitting greens all day down there with the 4h and 5h, It got to the point where I would rather be 200 out vs 175 out. (it was cold and wet and windy ... there were courses I played where I'd previously hit PW into a hole and I was 40 yards back of that 14 days back, felt like 6700 was 7300)

If the Apex came in a 6 .. I'd have to eat my man card and get one. Big single malt needed tonite to bring some manliness back in

That's all I got .. except I need to find a "players" 6h. Sort of an oxymoron I know. Any recommendations to test ?

One important unanswered question from this thread: which big single malt?

That was a year ago. If I had to guess, Cardhu 12

  • 1 year later...

Musical chairs with shafts continues. 6h needed again due to slowly recovering golfers elbow

Got smart and had the fitter CPM my favorite 5h ... 299.

(The strong flex of the same matrix shaft in the 6h was 287 and was actually 1/4" longer than the 5h ... Ro ro)

Fitter plan - based on my current Aldila run - was this >>>>

Tip trim the nvs105x, did it and is now cpm'g 310, then butt trim to get shorter and less upright (closer to a 6i length to match my set) and lead tape to match swingweight of 5h

Now we have a weapon, a 6h, a high towering draw producing 28* Adams a12 tour issue prolo G. Dethroned three different 6 irons and a Zing2 five iron

Of course when my i500 six iron arrives I may change my tune

I live in Florida and around here fairways are cut real short and a lot of hard pan. High number hybrids work great for me. I get some looks on 130-135 yard par 3’s from golfers until they see some of the results. On a hole like that I have a 34 degree Sumo2 square hybrid. Takes off like a lob wedge and one bounce it  stops. At one time all I ever used was irons and did well but at 67 years of age I will use whatever it takes. By the end of 18 nothing more is said about my bag setup. Still have 1-3-5-7 woods in my bag. The make of the woods XXIO Prime 9 The biggest number iron I carry now is a nine iron. The best I have played in years from about 6100-6200 yards.

Picked up a G410 5 hybrid last year and was very impressed. Just got a G 410 4 hybrid as well. The best hybrids I have ever hit, love the flat design, adds confidence. I have also been thinking about a 6 hybrid as well.

I will admit my iron game in Florida is sub par compared to native grasses at home.

reading the Richie Hunt stuff I want to hit greens more often and improve proximity from 175-245 ... pulling all stops

this club covering 185-190 should help

I wish more OEMs would push their smaller ‘players’ model hybrid to higher lofts.  The look and feel of Titleist hybrids has appealed to me since the 913 line but they stop at 25 degs in the H2/TS3 model.  I would much rather look at (and play) a hybrid with a shorter, stouter, heavier shaft than an equivalent large tech filled SGI or power type iron.

Your right. Fairways on most courses here in Florida and laser thin. My buddies come down from Pennsylvania  (Pittsburgh) and they really struggle with some of these courses. Tons of water everywhere doesn’t help there moods either. I get a real chuckle as some had high hopes. Most have not played in a few months there and I take them to a real tight course the last day and man do they ever complain.

It’s not the tightness of the grass, it is the lack of grass when dormant. .. and the grain greenside

Literally some fairway shots are like fairway bunker shots

One of my favorite shots is a 6hyb from 115yds.....one big long hop then it checks up perfectly

I'm almost at the point of hitting the 6hyb instead of PW, unless it's a tucked flag

I love when threads are revived, thanks Uncle Cardie! After moving to SL's, I dropped all the hybrids and went back to 4, 5, and 6 irons with decent results.  But there was just something about that 6H that got it back in the bag. Could choke down to the shaft and hit a 130 yard punch shot, a 185 high draw or putt with it from the fringe. So incredibly versatile and forgiving, kind of like the early days of marriage.  But I digress. It's back in the bag and the 5i is gone and I don't see it moving out in the near future.

Now that's ridiculous. Up through the 7h, sure, totally sensible and reasonable, but no farther than that, surely!!!

I bought one of the last SIM Max in a 4H - first impressions are that it is excellent. I did install an Accra FX 2.0 200 Series in it.

Just picked up a Ping g425 6 hybrid recently and have played on a simulator.  Played last summer with g410 4 and 5 hybrid, both of which I liked.  So far, the 425 6 hybrid feels better and is even more accurate, more reliable and consistent than my 6 iron.  If it keeps up early in the season, I'll add the 7 hybrid and feel very good about it.

The Ping G410 6 hybrid in the small minus flat setting is almost like cheating.

Had an approach shot with the ball well above my feet last weekend in a scramble. I hit it so far out the toe (almost a toe shank) that I instantly started whingeing.

I got mocked by my partners when it flew high and settled 15 feet right of the pin. The same shot with an iron would have been way short and left.

I love a smaller hybrid as my 6 and as many people have pointed out already, the adams "pro" models were all great from my limited experience of hitting them.

I don't know what it would take to knock my adams a12 pro 6 hybrid out of my bag (26*). blends perfectly between my z565 7 iron (30*) and my adams xtd ti 4 hybrid (23*). (My other irons are z765s). I have the same shaft in it as my irons.

I will however swap it out for the z565 6 iron in extra windy conditions (and I turn my xtd down to its lowest loft setting)

Let’s not forget we saw Camilo bagging a 6h a few events back .. a PGA tour winner .. likely a +7 capper !!!

I do have an inbound matching recoil black shaft to go in my 919t 6i, another cog in the testing equation

It’s still in the air and can’t make the final call until I hit my courses at home in April
