Using the s20 for the first time today. The odometer says I took 9000 steps with a distance of 166. Any idea what the distance unit is?

After I finish a round and enter "end round", the stats screen gives my distance walked in miles and tenths of a mile.

Callaway Mavrik Max 3 thru 5 hybrids
Srixon z565 6 thru PW

All subject to change in the blink of an eye.........and I blink a lot.

Can someone explain how to use the Measure Shot properly.

First, do you have to be using the scorecard or tracking stats?

Second, do i have to choose measure shot from the exact spot i want to measure from, and do i do this before i actually hit the shot i want to measure? Just wondering if this watch will automatically measure shot based on previous swing. So if i get to my ball after a tee shot can i choose measure shot and will it tell me the distance of the drive, or do i have to think ahead of time that i want to measure the shot and choose to do so, and do i click on this before or after the shot.

i realize i'm probably making this harder than it is and with more experience i'll probably figure it out. the manual is pretty basic and doesn't go into much more than letting me know the watch measures shots.

this watch supposedly can tell when you have taken a shot. is this based on a swing or does it go by impact. basically, are you finding it registers a swing on a practice swing or is the watch able to detect impact and ignore a practice swing.

After you hit the ball

1. hit ok

2. hit up or down to scroll to measure shot

3. hit ok

At this point the yardage should be 1, 2, or maybe 3 yards. I say that because while I am hitting buttons I am walking to my bag. Proceed to your ball and when you get to it look at your watch and it will show the yardage.

4. hit ok to return to yardage to the green.

I got the S20 today and had to charge it right out of the box. Is that "normal"? I will have other questions, I'm sure. :)

It took about three hours to fully 100% charge.

How close to a golf course do I have to be for the "locating satellites" to find a course?

I said "OK" to start a round and the "wheel" image for locating satellites has stayed in the same position for awhile now.

Any help would be appreciated guys, thanks!

Duh, yes. Online "chat" with Garmin Support on their web site answers a lot of questions.

Mine took about 3-4 minutes to lock on to a course the first time I used it.

After I charged it up I went outside my house and the satellite found 20 course within 20 miles of me. I have yet to get on the course with it because of family scheduling "issues". Only really need it for golf distances, don't care about # of steps, notifications, etc.

does anyone know if this watch can track your distance of a shot "measure shot" feature....while not having the scorecard function turned on.

basically i want the ability to see how far i hit a particular shot using the feature on the watch but i don't want to be asked for my score/fairway/etc on every hole and i don't want to input the club used every hole.

the garmin auto shot feature is pretty useless to me because the ability to edit after the round on the pc is really limited. it registers practice swings so if you hit a shot and then while your friend is playing their shot you take a couple of practice swings it will register these. just more work than its worth to try to delete or add correct shots post round

Yes, the Measure Shot function works without the club tracking functions turned on.

Regarding the autoshot detection, have you seen this:

https://forums.garmi...etection-to-100

That's for X40, but I'd suppose it might apply to S20 as well. I haven't got either of these, still haven't decided which one I'll order.

FWIW, I have the x40 and kind of wish I got the s20 instead. The primary reason is that 1) although I thought it might be cool at the time, in hindsight I have no real need for the pulse monitor and 2) I find while the x40 works just fine on the course, the display is a bit small to be convenient as a full time watch - especially in low light and for these old eyes.

Thanks, been having the same thoughts. I've got Fitbit Charge HR and was considering the X40 as a proper followup.

However, once I saw them both live side by side, my eyes that have seen 50 years of life preferred the larger display.

I've been using the Garmin S20 for over a year now. The GPS is reliable and accurate and I've grown to like this watch. Unfortunately, the website sucks for stat tracking. It would be awesome if Connect it was more like Arccos or Game. Wondering if there's anything else out there that combines stat tracking and the full-featured usefulness and a real golf GPS watch?

Edit: Phone in the back pocket, wearing something on my belt, or adding tags to my clubs all = no bueno. This is where the S20 is really awesome.

completely agree.....watch is perfect when it comes to gps yardages. distances to hazards works well, but i'm not seeing distances to water hazards or creeks as it does bunkers. the shot tracking i used once and it wasn't something i'll use again. limited editing abilities made it more frustrating to try to edit shots, and without the proper editing of rounds it makes the stats worthless as they are skewed.

how well does autoshot tracking work? Are there any misses? and does it take practice swings for real shots? Is it possible to tell the watch that you took a swing in case the watch missed it?

Once I got the software upgraded it was pretty good for full swings, missed shots might happen occasionally but were rare. Garmin says it's not supposed to work for short game shots (chips + pitches + putts) but I found it did pick up many of them anyways. I personally haven't had any issues with practice swings being picked up - I think it is 'looking' for the shock of impact to register the swing.

Unfortunately, no, there is no way to manually enter a shot. I know many folks who have made a request to add that feature but don't know if there are any actual plans for that.

Correctly records swing and location around 75% of the time for me. The remaining 25% could easily be addressed with more robust editing features. However, sometimes it misses shots, sometimes it records shots that didn't happen, and no way to edit = no bueno.

So if it sometimes misses shots and you can't manually tell the watch that you've made a shot, the only way to correct it is afterwards on your computer once you've uploaded it? This is actually really difficult to do because you have to remember the missed shots when you later on edit it on your computer otherwise the stats are wrong.

Nope - Can't even add shots after the round on the computer. Which makes a little sense since you'd not only need to remember the shot and club but you'd need some kind of accurate location information for it to be useful in the context of shot tracking. It would make sense to allow us to add a shot on the course, but not afterwards.

Now that's just shot tracking and club distance stats. The score, GIR, FW's hit, FW miss direction, and putt stats are separate and are not affected by any missed shots since those are all entered manually anyways.

What I do is I don't enter club selection on the course (I forget half the time anyways). Only after the round do I go back and assign the clubs to each shot and leave the 'bad' numbers unassigned so they don't skew the stats.

that's a real pity. It can't be too difficult to just press a button for a shot in case it couldn't automatically recognize it. You have to confirm which club you have shot, anyway, so it would just be one added button press to manually tell the watch that there was a shot. This could be an easy fix to this.

If it misses a shot just swing the club again from the same location and hope it records it. Once you leave the location of the missed shot I see little value in being able to add afterward since accurate location wouldn't be possible.
