Black Lab putters

Recommended Posts

Picked up a BL7 a little while back and I have to say, it is really nice. Love that these putters are as high quality as anything else for such a great price. Putting too well with my current gamer to bag the BL7 but it could get some play time very soon. My only gripe with the 7 is that the back where the fangs are, they are just as wide as a golf ball so it's near impossible to scoop the ball up off the ground!!! Other than that, very cool putter.

Love the putter but frustrating not being able to pick up the ball!

I don't think Chip is making  any more BL-1 blade putters. Looks like eBay or BST to find another one.

Correct. I just emailed him today and he confirmed this. Unfortunate as I was ready to order one now after delaying for a year.

There's a naked one on eBay you could grab and get finished to spec.

The oil can finish on this Duble Dawg is ridiculously awesome. I’ve personally never seen a better one. Photos just don’t do it justice.

Chip always had one of the nicest oil can finishes.

I’ve been using the Duble Dawg a lot indoors over the past couple of weeks and comparing it to some of my other currently-owned more-expensive putters and my memory bank of previously-owned more-expensive putters. From a sound/feel perspective, I don’t really think it’s possible to get a better and more “solid” feel than this putter. the only other putter that felt this solid is a Gene Nead 991 I owned (and of course sold) a while back.

I know another putter fanatic who rotates through putters even faster than I do, and one of his keepers is a Black Lab BL-1. I don’t own a BL-1 and have never tried one, but the fact that this guy has kept his BL-1 for as long as he has must mean something. If you are a putter maniac like myself and you haven’t tried out a Black Lab putter, you’re probably missing out. I kick myself for not trying one out sooner, especially because the price point is totally reasonable compared to the other $700+ customs out there.

Having moved to the Savannah area, I decided to walk in and meet Chip and talk about his putters. Immediately, I knew I'd have him build me a putter, and left there throwing down a deposit. Well, it was finished up today, so I thought I'd throw it up now that it's in my hands.

Admittedly, he told me upfront he doesn't do any finishes on the heads anymore (too costly), and wasn't necessarily looking to paint fill all of the stamps I asked for (it was a bit more than average, so I understood lol). In the end, the finished project from him will still get a bit more love in the cosmetic department after I figure out just what I want to do.

That being said, it is a simple yet solid build and it performed really well for me in my initial session. A neat piece for this was that he installed a partial graphite upper (leftover stock from old Scotty fittings apparently), and threw in a bit of a counter weight at the end. Basically a Chip Usher "stoke lab" shaft, which was a cool touch.

Is it the most elaborate custom putter available? No. Was the product and experience with Chip worth every penny? Absolutely. Nothing like have a cool local company with such a genuinely awesome person to build me something unique.

Still pretty nice and paint is easy to do at home and fun at times.

I do wish he had more options for lefties but I understand why, if this putter came with a flow or slant neck I'd definitely do one in a 3/4 straight back but could maybe still make it work.

Congrats on the putter!

I ordered my BL-1 in 2015 and it is the only putter I will ever use.

The putter is a tribute to my sons and I will never forget the message that Chip sent to me along with the putter when it was delivered.  "It was a pleasure making this putter for you and an absolute honor stamping your sons' name into this putter."    It was then that I truly realized that golf is so much more than a game or a sport.....its a common link amongst friends who you haven't met yet.....

Yeah, even as a face balanced guy, I was looking to venture down the road for a touch of toe hang on this one. I don't think it's a lefty thing, I honestly think he's probably nearing a relative timeframe of being done unfortunately. Overall costs went up for him on just about everything, and he doesn't look to continue getting the extras that he used (grips, necks, finishes, etc). That's just my personal feeling, and I don't blame him. It's one of the reasons I wanted to get one now.

Yeah I get all that I just meant his other shapes like his BL-2 I find really nice but again milling out all those for lefties is costly where the model you got is symmetrical.

As for the cost side I'd just ask for some stamps, no paint, no grip cut to like 36" so I can grip and cut to length and I'll paint myself and I'd be happy if it saved me a few bucks and Chip as well.
