Collecting Putters

i don't know about collecting for the sake of collecting; but buy putters you KNOW you will use, and use often. if you have a couple in your 'collection' to go to and pull off the bench now and then...nothing wrong with that. if you have the aforementioned 20-80 or so laying around with dust -- that's no bueno.

PING G430 LST / 9* (dialed to 10.5*) / HZRDUS Smoke Green 60 6.5

Dark Speed LS / 3w (dialed to 15.5*) / Denali Blue 70TX

Mizuno Pro 24 Fli-Hi / 3i / HZRDUS Smoke Black RDX 100 6.5
Mizuno Pro 245 / 4-GW / KBS Tour X

SM9 Black / 54,58 / KBS Tour S+

I have a 2 Cameron's and working on a DLR (Machine), Carbon, & a Byron Morgan. That should hold me for a bit (just waiting for recent sales to clear PP). All setup about the same. Did the SAM lab a while ago as well as the PING fitting. Close rate etc etc puts me in the Newport/Newport 2 style at 71° 3-5 loft. D4 feels good to swing.

I only buy what I can play. Collecting takes a lot of money and you won't get it back unless you buy the right putters. Then you are lucky to get the money spent back. I currently have 7 and it does not make me any better putter. Two are already to be sold when the prices pick up. If they are gamers then you have to decide which you like the most and that can drive you crazy. JMHO

Sounds like you are a Plumber-neck guy. The Scottsdale Anser/Dale head Pings are what started it all. Every company will have their version/copy of one.

When exactly did people start referring to Anser-style (plumber's neck, heel-toe weighted, cavity back) putters as "Blade Putters"?

Geez... would you call a Ping Eye 2 a "Blade Iron"?

In my mind a "Blade" putter is a Spaulding Calamity Jane, Wilson Arnold Palmer/8802/8813, Scotty Cameron Napa, Sportsman Wizard 600, or a Bettinardi BB2.

Technically, you're correct. I'm old school as well, but with the size of some of the putter / mallet heads that are popular today, Anser / Newports are often referred to as "blades" nowadays.

I'm working on getting a German Stainless Steel (GSS) putter to see if it's all that it's cracked up to be. So far I have a 303 SS and a carbon putter but no GSS. Came across Kingston Putters, they have a KP1 GSS that is affordable that looks like the 009 / DH89 / Anser style. Think I may have one put together for me.

I can only speak for me, but here is my deal.

I am not sure when exactly I started hoarding err ahh collecting putters. I do remember getting my studio 1 and it being so much nicer than any other putter I ever owned and feeling amazing....from there I sorta just had that "I like putters" bug. I currently have about 20 putters. Which is not not that bad compared to some people here lol. Truth be told, if I had an infinite amount of money I would happily have 100s of putters. I think there are so many amazing sticks that I really just love and would love to have, and I am not talking about big money putters, I mean I had to tell myself no to a handmade ken giannini that was pretty reasonable compared to an off the rack odyssey etc.

My direction has been to buy used so that I can use and enjoy them without changing my money in them much unless I game then hard, in which case the value is in the use. I buy strictly what catches my eye, I stay away from anything cast or with plastic parts, and for the most part stainless steel (but my lajosi is stainless and I love it) so milled and carbon are sorta pre requisites. After that it just has to fit my eye and be a little off the path. I do have a lot of Cameron's, probably 5 or so, but they are ALL either studio of pure platinum models. I am not saying do like me, but I am saying decide some set of parameters that defines a putter you would want, and I think being brand blind and specific model merit is good, and go from there. I have putters from cameron, tad Moore, lajosi, Byron proto, miura, golds factory, masda, Hiro matsumota, Yamada(wait just sold that), John byrons, I know I am forgetting some since I flip a lot as well, but the point is that try some different stuff in styles that catch your eye. You would be surprised how "lesser" known brands really stack up against big ones if you buy right. I have a john Byron and a masamoto with less than $200 between them both that hang with any of my putters quality wise. I also think it would be fun to have a sub $200 putter collection, you would be amazed at the kind of badass flatsticks you can get sub $200 so don't get caught up in this "tour" over inflated value crap. Also when you buy, make sure your deal is 20% lower than what you KNOW you can get for it if you are patient because other wise you probably lost money.
