Which set of the AP2 irons are best?

NikeSwoosh13

Recommended Posts

I have owned several sets... the Originals for about 3 years, the 710's for about 1 year, the 712's for about 6 weeks and the 714's for a year and a half....... I demo'd the 716's for 5 rounds and like others have said they seem a bit bouncy on the firmer conditions and a little higher on ball flight. I feel by far the best I have played were the 714's closely followed by the originals.

Absolutely awesome info so far. I can't thank yall enough! I've sent my buddy the link to this thread and he was blown away by how quickly the respomses poured in with so much great intel. I told him its time to create a WRX account and join the community! I believe he's torn between the 714 and 716's. I just purchased the Nike Vapor Fly irons and I'm kind of second guessing myself after hearing such great reviews with the AP line.

Had the 712's for 3 years, played 714's for the past six months. Major differences for me:

Rounded sole made it easier to visualize getting to the ball more from the inside. Probably just me, but now can call up a draw much easier vs the squared sole of the 712.

Something's up with my 714 4-iron. I think it swingweights the same, but 712 4-iron used to be a go-to club for me, but now my 714 4-iron is a ton less forgiving. Maybe the offset is different, or something.

Love the matt finish of the 714 vs 712. First world problems, but 712's chrome would blind me when hitting into the sun.

Otherwise I thought the transition was going to take a few weeks, but it just took a few swings.

Debating on getting back into an AP2 set, but which one?!

Figured I’d revive this thread with the 718s now out for over a month. Anyone gaming the 718’s who’s played previous AP2 models?

IMO you can't go wrong with any model of the AP2. They are all very similar with only subtle differences between each (i.e. Thinner Topline, more or less offset, etc...). They are all very forgiving and consistent in feel.

Are the 718s worth paying an extra $7-800 on compared to a gently used set of 716s?

If you have such a price difference - no.

Just going off what I can get a set for now compared to what it would cost me to find a slight used set of 716s. If I wait until May or April I should be able to find a set at a reasonable price.

Someone on page 1 described the 714's as having a clicky feel in the sweet spot. He voted them the worst feel out of everything (not including the 18s as it was last year). Can anyone comment on that?

The 716CB is the best AP2 off all time.

All kidding aside, id rank the 710 and 714 ahead of the 716. I haven't hit the 718 so I cannot comment there.

Owned 2 sets of the 2009 and 4 sets of the 714's. The 714's are finicky to say the least and require a good strike since the sweet spot is very small but high on the face. Groove 4-5 seems to be the best feel when using impact tape. I ventured over to the 716 CB's for this year and wanted to go back to the AP2's. To be honest I never hit the 710's or 716's. I went for a fitting for the 718's and fell in love with the feel and flight. I was dead set on the Ctapers since I had them in the CB's and demoed them in the AP3's. Another customer was demoing the CTaper 120 Stiff and the fitter said here try the PX 6.0 since its a similar profile. I was hitting pure shot after pure shot to 172 yards with the 7 iron and the deviation was +/- 2 yards and dispersion was only 3 yards left or right. After 6 or 7 shots I held the club up and had good 10 second pause of puzzlement. It was the 716 AP2 I was just hitting. $725 out the door for a custom ordered set 4-PW 716 AP2's, 1 degree up that had the PX 6.0 and MCC White and black grips brand new in plastic that a customer ordered but never picked up. Like it was fait or something. 716 was a big improvement over the 714's buy a long shot. The 714's play and have the forgiveness like a blade where as the 716's play like AP1's with the profile of an AP2.

The numbers arent out yet for the 718. But the 714 were actually in fact more forgiving then the 716 and the 716cb was actually more forgiving then the 716ap2 for those that care.

As for my experience with the 718...they look and feel nice. They definetly look smaller then my 714s.

If u wanna save cash and go 716 go cb. If ur adamant on ap2 and wanna save go 714 over 716

Also the 716ap2 are hands down the ugliest of them all. Very ap1 looking with that badging

A buddy of mine who loved his 716's said that he hated the 718s... I'm so confused!

The answers are all over the map. I think it’s safe to say just pick the AP2 you like the look of best because you really can’t go wrong. All AP2’s are good clubs, just look at how well they hold their value :)

Lol so true. They are all good because they change very little.

There is absolutely no way this is true. I have owned the 716 AP2 and CB and 4 sets of 714 AP2 and 710CBs. 716CB's are like the magical unicorn here on GolfWRX. They have seriously dethroned the 905R as the most over-hyped Titleist club. Pros are either playing the AP2's or MB's and very little CB players for a reason. The CB's play just as hard as the MB's do but still look like a 1980's Chevy pickup. I think Titleist wanted a more forgiving AP2 after the 714 line and went all the way to the edge of being an AP1 and a lot of pros said it was too much so they dialed them back in on the 718 Line. I think I happen to be the person who the 716 AP2 happened to fit really well. I wanted more forgiveness then the 714 AP2 but don't want to play the AP3 or AP1. 716 AP2's so far are the only ones that feel like they have a little pop in the face. The other AP2's have more of a blade feel. I loved the pure feel of the 714 AP2 but hated the harshness of miss hits. Miss hits with the 716 CB didn't even feel that bad but you lost a ton of distance.

Awesome post Hondabuff!

I'm going to try and get my hands on a set of 718s and 716s and hit them on my GC2 over the winter. Numbers don't lie, whatever fits fits.

I sold my motorcycle, thought I would finally splurge on something I always wanted, a NEW set of clubs. I went with the 718's AP2s. The look and finish were stunning. Took them out the range and they are.... really nice. There is a nice sweet spot, the center / tow hits weren't that bad, and the lower on the face hits still weren't punished like some clubs I have had in the past. Right now I'm very happy I made the choice.
