Which model aside from the 716 or 718's are the most forgiving

716 AP2's were more forgiving and felt like the ball jumps off the face even though the launch monitor showed the 718 to have faster ball speeds by roughly 1mph. 718's had a firmer feel like the 714's. While using impact tape the 716's felt like the sweet spot was the size of a quarter where as the 718's were the size of a nickel. Finding the correct shaft was paramount. Something that stuck with me from my fitting was when I was doing the dry swings. I never could just clip the top of the grass like you see the pros do. When dry swinging the KBS shafts and Modus shafts I was never able to just dry swing and clip the mat where as the weighting of the PX allowed me to do it consistently. Fitter kept saying to dry swing to see how I liked the balance of the club.

In layman's terms, a higher-MOI golf club will be more forgiving than a lower-MOI club. Why? It's that resistance to twisting. 716 AP2 has the same MOI as the 714 AP1, both are 14.1 MOI.

To review, Playability Factor is determined by a simple evaluation of the laws of physics and applied advanced mathematics to develop a formula that computes an index of clubhead Playability. For example, for irons the formula evaluates five dimensional and mass properties of an iron head

  • Vertical Center of Gravity
  • Horizontal Center of Gravity
  • Rearward Center of Gravity
  • Geometric Center of the Face
  • Moment of Inertia

In short, the higher the Playability Factor value generated by the formula, the more playable and forgiving the particular design should be. The six specific levels of Playability Factor are:

  • Ultra Game Improvement
851 & Up - All Players Benefit: The absolute easiest to play golf club designs. Almost cannot tell a loss of distance or unsold feeling on off-center hits. Highest technology available. Mostly very low center of gravity. All benefits from "Super Game Improvement" category also apply. Becoming more popular with tournament pros.
  • Super Game Improvement
701 - 850 - All Players Benefit: Irons in this category are extremely easy to play. Very solid hits more of the time. More consistency. Best distance. Mostly lower center of gravity heel/toe/low soleweighting. Becoming more popular with tounrament pros.
  • Game Improvement
551 - 700 - All Players Benefit: Hits the ball straight and fairly solid on off-center hits with little distance loss. Heel/toe/soleweighting and some muscleback designs. Popular with tournament pros.
  • Conventional
401 - 550 - Better Players Only: 0-14 handicap, 450-550 points should be considered minimum popular iron design category for tournament pros who play muscleback blades. Above 15 handicap would be best moving up to game, super or ultra improve categories.
  • Classic
251 - 400 - Difficult To Play: Very good players only. 0-5 handicap is best and a solid ball striker. No game improvement features. Still used by some tounrament pros. Best to use 325 as minimum MPF.
  • Player Classic
0 - 250 - Not Recommended: Very few if any tournament pros still play clubs in this category. It is absolutely essential that the ball be struck very close to the club's center of gravity. Center of gravity is usually higher and toward the heel.

Each category represents a range of 150 Playability Factor points. This range encompasses the spectrum of performance characteristics. The higher the Playability Factor rating of a particular model ...The more it will help a golfer get the ball into the air. The less sensitive the design is to off-center hits (ie the larger its sweet spot). Simply put, via Maltby Playability Factor, a higher handicap golfer will experience straighter shots and more consistent distance (typically longer) with a HIGHER Playability club. That same golfer, with a LOWER Playability club, would find it more difficult to get the ball up in the air and the feel at impact would be less solid The result would be a tendency for shots to miss to the right or left and be shorter.

The Maltby Playability Factor is the premiere clubhead fitting guide in golf today, because it is based on scientific data, not marketing hype. But don’t take our word for it. Here’s what Master Clubmaker Tom Grundner of Tucson, Ariz., said about Playability Factor: “If you are unfamiliar with Maltby Playability Factor, learn it! It is not just a marketing gimmick. For the first time we have a way of systematically knowing the ease with which a clubhead or shaft might be used by an average player, and it will revolutionize the way clubs are made and especially marketed.

The Maltby Playability Factor represented a breakthrough in custom clubfitting and clubhead performance evaluation has continued to evolve over the years. Our Technical Staff has devoted hundreds of hours to refining our Playability expertise, and the products listed on this site reflect their efforts. Use these listings in pairing golfers with new equipment and you can be confident that your choice will match their specific swing needs.

Thing is maltby doesnt rate moi that high as twisting with an iron isnt as prevelant.

The key figures are Cdim and Avcog

Cdim is where the centre of gravity is in relation to left and right (lower number is closer to heel or hosel)

Avcog is how high or low the cg is. Lower makes it easier to elevate the ball and still get good distance and height on shots a groove or two low.

That’s really cool. I just got mine a month or so ago and I’ve only got to use them at the simulator right now(maybe 10 rounds). But man am I ever loving them so far. I’ve always played CBs or MBs and these are just so much easier to hit. They’re the first irons to displace my 712 CB’s since they went in he bag 4 years ago. :)

I am pretty sure Stricker is using the 718s now, as per the last WITB. Spieth has also switched for the Aussie Open.

Some of it depends on how you like your irons to look to your eye. the new 718's look very much like the MB and CB at address now.

(less offset, square set up) But have the forgiveness of past AP1's. They moved even more tungsten to the far perimeter of

the blade. Not an easy engineering feat. Personally, I love the new look. Just received mine, and looking forward to playing.

Update on playing the new 718's. Very solid. After playing CB's for several years I played 712 AP2's all summer and really had a good summer. For me, the 718's are a nice blend of the solid feel of the 712's but with the clean, less offset look of the MB and CB. Very happy with them.

I think this thread topic is a testament of how good the AP2 line is. You have to be really picky to find any faults in all the lines. I would bet money if you put my PX 6.0's in any of the heads with a blind test, I would really have no clue which was which! Its odd cause the PX shaft never worked out good for me in the CB's and always used CTapers but the CTapers didn't work for me in the AP2's.

For the life of me I can't remember if I have 712 or 710. Either way, I love the looks of them the most. There was something about the originals that look so sweet with that matte and chrome finish combined.

  • 11 months later...

To me they are the golf equipment equivalent of a gold-digging supermodel that refuses anything but missionary after the wedding...

Funny, that's how I feel about all of the AP2 models.

You and me both imo the best iron line out their, I just last night bought the ap2 718. I played one of the best irons cf16 and ready to move on and I was thinking mizzy but after hours of testing back to ap2. Very good design looks feel and for the ones who say they are not forgiving I strongly disagree as easy as any other iron in this category. I ordered mine in the 4 and 5 iron ap3 which I enjoyed as well not as much as the ap2 line but that extra forgiveness I like. All with kbs ctaper stiff great combo.
