Thrift Store Jackpot

Recommended Posts

I had heard tell of one of these, but, never seen one, so, I was beginning to think they were like that mythical Unicorn, until, I waltzed in to a local Goodwill this afternoon. Shamrock flange blade putter. Also, picked up a decent Sun Mountain bag with 2 Ping dual color balls inside.

It's a Dead ringer for the Armour IMG of old. That's the market Shamrock was hunting for with that putter

Actually....the Wilson 8802.

Great differences between the 8802 & Ironmaster putters.....

You are darn skippy on that statement--- But then again I was canning putts on the practice green yesterday with a Little David 8802 copy that I have a mid sized SS grip and LOTS of lead tape on--- May unseat the Armour and rusty Scotty. Yep the Shamrock was more like the 8802 and I am going to ruffle feathers here the Wilson 8802 was a refined copy of the 40s and 50s Ironmasters

I gots me one of dem L'il David 8802 putters, Stu - never hit a putt with it.

Wasn't on the market long before Wilson had a fit about the 8802 designation.

Yep that is it just like mine. I was messing around in the shop in the rain last Saturday. I had one of those Master Grip midsize grips that Bear had bought 4 or 5 of because "they were on sale at a great price" He hates those things but "they were on sale at a great price" duuh go figure his club and equipment hoeing ways. Anyhow I had seen Mickelson putting with what I call a big flanged modified 8802 style with a big grip. I have been using the claw style grip myself on and off the last year or so. I figured WTH? I use air anyhow and if it did not work I could shoot it off in a jiffy. Balanced the weight out with lead tape felt good. I finally got to the range yesterday morning to try out the recently rebuilt MP-68 and 2 wedges. Threw it in the bag. got on the putting green with it and was canning everything I stood over. Went over to the 18th green which is a huge green and putted from all over that green with pretty decent results. If someone asks what is that I can tell a half truth and state it is an 8802. Got so much lead tape on the sole no one can read the difference and tell it ain't a Wilson 8802 but technically it IS an 8802. And yes it came from my favorite "store" the scrap bin at work--- Got more money in this case in lead tape than I do the actual club and zilch in the grip

Made a few scores yesterday. A few Bullseye Putters, a Taylormade 1 Iron and a Ram Wizard 1 Iron. But the coolest was this Hogan Forty-Seven wedge along with Directors with an Apex 4 shaft 3-9 irons. In nice condition. The close up is of the 9 iron. It looks like the 47 may have been a substitute for the equalizer but I’ll go back again today and see if the E shows up.

I used to own those Ben Hogan Director irons. They were sweet.

I went back to find the E wedge for those Directors. It wasn’t there but I did score a 3-P set of Burner irons with S-90 Precision shafts. I am assuming those are stiff? They are in terrific shape. I almost passed on them because they were so dirty.

Those Taylor Mades are great feeling clubs, and very easily workable

S-90 is indeed stiff. They were Rifle 6.0 shafts.

I grew up using the "47" and learned how to properly play from sand with that club.

At the time, it was not a favored club among better players, and for that reason, the people I played with kind of "pooh-poohed" it...at least until I took their money using it.

Was a great, all around usable club, unless you tried to hit it off real hard-pan. Not that you couldn't, but it took lots of practice. I practiced by hitting it off concrete and asphalt, until I could do most anything with it.

I at one time had about 4...the one I played with, and some back-ups. Until all my "friends" took my back-ups.

If you ever decide to swap out that club for some of those putters that I have you have expressed interest in...let me know.

And, those Tour Burners are excellent clubs. Some of the earlier "hot" irons.

I got this TM stand bag for $6.99. One leg a touch bent but the legs function fine and all the zippers and bag length dividers are in order.

This is an (almost) all Goodwill bag of clubs I acquired over the years.

- TM Burner Superfast (original - 2.0 HC) I got out of the dumpster.

- V-Steel 15* I think I got for $2.99

- Raylor 19*

- Rac 4 iron $2.99

- Iron Cleek 5-PW $2.99 per

- ATV 54* $2.99

- TPA XII putter $2.99

This is one of my many backup sets - worthy of leaving in one of my cars and not caring as much if some thieving dirtbag breaks into my car

Still have a set sitting in my garage somewhere, would play them but wonder on the groove legality.

Honestly, if I lived where Joe is pulling all these steals from, I'd consider quitting my job and opening an eBay store to live off of. Unreal scores and the stuff he leaves behind is mind boggling.

I was actually thinking the same thing about pymmdcp and all the scores he's been pulling in lately around here...

What you can do on the bent leg if it weakens and breaks is insert a wooden dowel in with club epoxy and slide it in and then slide the other part over it that is called sleeving I have fixed quite a few for folks over the years like that. Another tip on the rubber tips on stand bags. You can take a cheap ladies or junior grip -- tape it up wet style with 2 sided tape--- If you want it short just trim the grip down to the butt end if you want> I can not take credit for that last idea A WRXer from across the pond turned me on to that one when I first came on here. The leg sleeve is an old race car trick we used to do with bent cage sections but of course we welded them in

Sorrrryyy. Most of it is up on eBay now with low min bids. I wanted to put them up as buy it now but didn't want to wait for the right buyer. I've only played one round so no need for me to be that guy with Titleist covers. I'd rather sell it and keep finding my way into better clubs as I progress.
