Thrift Store Jackpot

Today’s find was awesome as well! Not nearly as good as the second set but I’m not complaining. 4 Odyssey putters. 3 Tour Edge Hot Launch 2 drivers. 3, 5 and hybrid. A few wedges and a set 3-9 plus P of Titleist 735 CM. Nice Sun Mountain bag, too!

I’m in the northeast, Jimmy. Pretty affluent NY suburb. Actually this bag has the previous owner’s name on the clubs and I thought to look him up in case it was a mistake. Turns out he’s the CEO of Lehman Bothers. Don’t know if they’d patch me through to him. ?

I’d say they’re in pretty good shape, Moko. Maybe almost as good as the Mizuno’s in the second set and very playable. The chrome looks like it scratches easier than what I would expect.

I’m a high handicap and don’t know much about these clubs but I think I’m going to suck with them. ??

@Varga_Knives. The 735's are a forged head. They're going to show "character marks" more readily than a cast head. Although they look quite clean for an iron model that first showed up in 2005. Might play better than you think, they have a low VCOG (vertical center of gravity) so they should be relatively easy to launch. If you can coexist with the TTDG S400, that's a rather stout shaft.
Richard Fuld, Jr.? Was CEO of Lehman during the subprime mortgage debacle. The subsequent bankruptcy being a key event in the Wall Street meltdown of '08. "To Big To Fail". I digress.
As you're finding, thrift stores located near affluent areas with golf courses and country clubs nearby are fertile grounds for club scrounging. The wealthy don't bother with selling off old (and newer) clubs, trading them in. They just give them away. Some of my best finds have been in such areas. I'd keep hitting that thrift periodically until the well runs dry. However, this game can get out of hand quickly with implements proliferating like rabbits. Hope you have storage space.
Or. Sell them off. Without knowing your time and/or inclination, but you may find that some of this classic gear has some value. If you want to undertake the process of liquidation. Then use the accumulated proceeds to acquire golf stuff that you really want to play. Thus making the new kit almost free (LOL). That's become my M.O. these days. Find items of interest, sell them, flush up the PayPal account, buy new(er) gear that I'm interested in playing. (Realizing that's trending towards heresy in the Classic forum.) Hint: Don't divulge your PayPal slush fund password to the Mrs.
Congrats again. The thrill of the hunt can become quite addictive.

Laissez les bons temps rouler!

@Fellaheen51 Thanks for the great reply! Yep, that’s the name on the clubs. Too big to fail...
I agree that Goodwill would be the easiest way to get rid of something of value for those that don’t need anything in return. Our gain!
I always loved the allure of the treasure hunt. Probably why I’m an avid fisherman looking for the next big hookup. I have a great fossil shark tooth collection from the time I spent down in GA. I could (and did) spend hours baking in the sun hunting for teeth. Probably part of the appeal of golf, too. Hunting for the perfect shot, perfect hole, perfect round...
I had no plans at the outset but building a set of clubs that work for me would be awesome! I still play Callaway x-14’s and a Taylor Made 320Ti that I bought new. I doubt the Tour Edge will replace my trusty TM but probably won’t get to the range until the weekend to find out. The hybrid Booby Jones I have high hopes for. Maybe the irons but I think those shafts could kill me.
I’m paycheck-to-paycheck so selling most off is the plan (and I really don’t need 8 putters ?).
In the end I really would love a few extra dollars for lessons as the best clubs in the world would only get me marginally better.

This! I hit the thrifts any time I am near one. Sometimes I find stuff I want to keep, but more often I find stuff that I can liquidate on the BAY and put it in the "golf mad money" account. The last couple years, I've netted enough money to buy a few new clubs, pay my club dues and take a couple cheap golf trips. Couple weekends ago I found a couple putters for $2 each that should net out about $40-50 total. It all goes in the golf account and every little bit helps.

I guess I’ve been spoiled. I should, but don’t, consider this a great find. All the woods ha e head covers and a nice Ping bag. Not shown is a Lynx mallet putter. The Big Bertha irons look rough but may clean up ok.

It's been a drought here in the Twin Cities thrifts.

Moreover, not only that, but the Play It Agains are hurting to get product in.

I have discussed this with some of the guys at PIA and they think there are a lot of peopel playing (picking up even) the game probably related somewhat to the Covid nonsense. That's a good thing I suppose. If that's the case.

Those old Berthas can be worth some money, especially if you have all the clubs. I scored a set of those (like 2 through sand if I recall correctly) from Goodwill maybe 8 years ago and made a nice flip selling them on eBay.

I passed up 3 woods today at my Goodwill.

They said Golfcraft PTR and they all had matching serial numbers.

Still not sure what I should be buying and what I shouldn't be buying.

I’m new to this myself but I think a quick eBay check would tell you a lot. I saw a couple on there with an average asking price of $20 each. Doesn’t seem like they’d be a quick sell at any price, though. Factor in time spent to clean them up, advertise and possibly ship and I think it was a good pass.

Big names are obvious; Ping, Callaway, Mizuno, Titleist, Taylor Made, etc., I’d grab what I can from that bunch.

I do a round and hit 4-5 Goodwills in the northern half of the Twin Cities maybe once a week if that and yeah, next to nothing out there. Been half tempted to buy the one off irons even and sell the on eBay just for extra golf money. That or getting into the vintage stuff and refurbishing them, but that's such a learning curve to figure out what's popular and what's not.

Hi AG! Good to see you on here. Yes they are beautiful. Like I said, makes me a l little sick they couldn’t have been Apex II or something I might use. But they’re going to eBay and I hope the go to a Dad with a young daughter that appreciates them. Yep I remember the AMF days. It’s also Texans favorite goodbye.? when the virus goes away, I’ll try to get down and play your course. Looks like we may be going back to Texas next year , Austin area. Take care.

I do have a lot to learn but do know that much. My point was, that as a buyer, adding the shipping cost on to a good deal may make it a bad deal. Like buying a set of irons at $75 may sound good but adding $40 for shipping may hold off on the trigger pulling.
