I definitely found a 3-PW set of Ping Eye 2's at the thrift shop today.  $16 later, I walked home with them.

Well shucks, I didn't have my handy dandy Ping dot chart with me at the time, so I looked it up today.  The  ones I bought are orange dot, for golfers below 5' 6".

I'd intended on playing them in my retro bag pictured above, but if they're actually way too small, I might have to get into the ol' flipping game.

I'm 6'3" and play my irons 2-3 degrees flat, so those charts aren't perfect! Old pings sell well though, so you'll do well either way.

Based on the Ping Color Code chart in use at the time of E2's, orange dot would be 2* flat from standard (7i = 62.5*).  Height is but one factor in the determination of one's color code.  WTF and club length are the other two.  Combined, the chart serves as a starting point for evaluating the appropriate effective lie angle.  Not as an absolute.  Other factors are involved (ex. distance from ball at address, spine angle, swing path delivery of head to ball).  Without getting geeky, it's based on right angle trigonometry (Pythagorean Theorem).  And it's applicable to all golfers and all irons, not just Pings.

Note that you already play G400's.  What color dot are those?  That would serve as a reference point for the deviation of the E2's from current.  Contend that a degree or two is not significant for the average recreational golfer.  The consistency of how we deliver the head to the ball will likely have a greater variance with any given swing.  Observing ball flight directional tendencies should be the final arbitrator of appropriateness and whether adjustments are necessary.

As you mentioned, could always sell the clubs and acquire ones with your color code.  However, if your E2's are in good condition, installed shafts are suitable (ZZ-Lite?), and they're SS (rather than BeCu), could send them to Ping and have the lies adjusted.  Nominal expense, they will change the dot color, and record the adjustment in their records (based on serial #).  Turn around was quick when I had a set adjusted a couple of years back.

Back to the regular "Thrift Store Jackpot" programming.

Ah, I misunderstood the Ping dot system then - I thought they indicated different lies by way of shortening the shafts.  Thanks for clarifying!

Yes, my new G400's are black dot.  I got a very loose fitting from the shop when I bought 'em last summer, and they said that I'd fit in either blue, black, or red depending on my preference.

edited to update:
Just checked the 6 irons - my G400's are about a half inch longer than the Eye 2's, and the Eye 2's are about an eighth inch longer than my MacGregors (though I suspect that is mostly due to the different grips).  The Eye 2's are right about the same length as the semi-custom set I'd used for junior golf all those years ago.

edit number 2:

If I did my math correctly, and if I found the right lie/loft table for the MacGregors, it looks like both the orange-dot Eye 2's and the MacGregor MCX's are very, very similar...generally the difference between two identical clubs is between .5 and 1 degree either way (in some pairs, the MCX's are more aggressive; in others, the Pings).  I've just done a head-to-head on a launch monitor with both sets, and I gotta say, my first "real" experience with old-school blades was pretty enjoyable.  It's hard to say which set was necessarily "better," though it's easy to say that I could benefit from grooving a more consistent swing.

100% True. The putter was in the back, almost like some else stashed it there. The headcover was in the bin next to it under some roller blades!

Nice find! Top line irons as I understand. Clean uncluttered looks.

Was the FC4000 2 iron part of the deal? Which model is it?

Yeah that 2 iron was in the mix as well along with some NW Custom 100 woods in an old Miller bag (along with an entire set of Delta Golf irons that are going right back to the thrift store). Don't know much about them but seems to be the same general grade as the Haigs. Here's a closeup of it.

Thanks. Sounds like a great pick up all round!

I would have expected a model number on the 2 iron such as SS1, PT1 etc - stamped top right as viewed in your picture. Does it have the black ceramic face? The three gold ring ferrule makes me think it may be an '80's remake, I have seen those without the ceramic which seems self defeating but to be honest i find the whole MacGregor reissue thing very confusing! Nice club whatever!

Club pictured is a reissue SS1 iron with the flame ceramic face.IMG_20191005_131125105.jpg.b975cc4b736d138fdee712338fa2925a.jpgIMG_20191005_131102535.jpg.37a1584c6b6428a734ef469f958320de.jpg

Yeah it doesn't have a PT1,PT2 or back face, but the grooves are black. There also doesn't seem to be enough room to actually put a stamp as it's so narrow. Lots of chatter on it so it's definitely been around. I'm sure a MacGregor guru would know.

No obvious shaft pin which to my mind is another reissue marker but as you say, hopefully some of the Mac guru's can clarify.

If they could also help ID and date these CT1's that would be great too!IMGP0001.JPG.jpg.09133fe0a9a708314863dfdc7fa83eb6.jpgIMGP0003.JPG.jpg.798878683ccae8887e5806e89064663e.jpg

That reissue is interesting. I bought a 1i-SW set of SS1s a year or so ago that look to be unhit. Mine were part of a limited edition run of 2500 sets that included woods and a putter, but my purchase was irons only. I think it came out in the 80s as well, but is different from yours. I agree with your assessment re. Mac reissues.

MCX woods and irons sold very well in the UK. Love the Pings despite them being the non-conforming models.

When I had both sets on a golf sim, the MCX's had more consistent gapping and dispersion, but went shorter.  The Pings went longer, but sprayed a lot further offline.

Just took a medium sized trashcan full of various clubs I've picked up at Goodwill as well as extras in bags that had decent irons or a Scotty putter over the last year and a half and dropped them right back off DI (Utah thrifter that just opened in Houston). Only kept the following:
'72 Apex 2-P w/ green Hogan bag

Golden Ram Tour Grinds 1-P

975D with ProForce shaft

Joe Powell persimmon woods 1-5
A few other nice looking Tony Penna & Titleist woods
"The Haig" irons, soon to be on eBay, if no interest they'll get recycled as well.

The hunt is kind of fun but the only things I've really gotten any value out of have been found at pawn shops. Frankly the thrift stores around here just aren't that good.

I did indeed (Willowbrook Goodwill) , but I misspoke as they're 1-9. Buttery smooth but a little faded. I've considered getting them re-chromed to go along with my 681 Custom Grinds and MP-5s to reside in the gallery of fine-lookin' chrome.
