Player contracts:- Stay put or go with the money?

Recommended Posts

It all depends on the type of money we are talking about. For an up and coming player, a new endorsement might be enough to keep them "in the game" while they gain much needed playing experience. For an established player, a switch might be more of a threat... Nike probably would open their wallet to get Spieth, but he has enough money in wins and other endorsements where switching clubs probably threatens his name/brand more than it is worth.

I would disagree with this statement based on one Rory McIlroy. Before he signed his Nike deal he had been the number one player 4 times, had 2 majors and numerous PGA and European tour wins. It didn't seem that switching clubs threatened his name or brand. Of course I remember it being stated that the Titleist and Taylormade offers he received before signing with Nike were not even in the ball park of the Nike deal.

Anyone saying they would be loyal and pass up an extra $20 mil is...can't say it but it's easy for someone to say when they don't actually have to do it. Hmmm, in a sport with no guaranteed paycheck you will pass on having your family set for many years? Sounds foolish to me.

I think anyone who has said has had the qualifier that they were already making serious dough. I mean if you're worth 80m an extra 20 might be inconsequential

Thing is, regular people make decisions all the time regarding money that are more impactful then that one in terms of reference. Someone making 80k a year and getting offered a job for 100k at a company he's unsure of, that 20k is more significant arguably as that dude needs to worry about money more then a multi millionaire, yet people turn it down all the time. I could make more money then I do now, but I like the security at my job.

It's only with sports sometimes I find where we expect people to take literally every dollar they can get, in real life people often don't do that

You may be right, but I disagree. The 20 million is very consequential. Even a guy like Tiger our Phil 20m is still 20m. I would be the flip of you. I would think of the 80k vs 100k as being inconsequential but the same numbers with millions suffix as real money. Like you said you could make more but don't because you are happy where you are. Guessing you are not in the 80 vs 100 million category but perhaps you are. :)

you could take the extra $20 mil and give it charity

I think people in the thread are making an apples to chipmunks comparison to what the OP is really asking. The OP is not asking anything about "changing jobs or changing companies". In fact you would be working for the exact same company, you would have the exact same hours, you even have the exact same buddies that you talk with at the water cooler. The only difference is you would have to use a Mac instead of a Dell, you would have to wear a polo with the little apple symbol on it and oh yeah we're going to pay you extra for it. Seems like a no brainer to me. Unless you really disliked Steve Jobs (RIP) and Tim Cook.

My point about changing jobs was to illustrate that some people aren't motivated by money (as long as they make enough). The idea of switching to a new equipment company may be of no interest to them, especially if they're already rich.

I agree with Jeff and the Canadians here. Once you get to silly money wtf difference does it make. But I'm saying that from a place of if I could live comfortably in a paid for estate , pay taxes , do whatever hobby I had at will and not have to work , but work when I wanted to. That's silly money level. In my opinion above that is greed. And that I am not. I don't wish to rule an empire or crush other companies , or compensate for any other shortcomings. If I were comfortable it would absolutely be enough.

It was only late last year that Rory made the comment that the $10 million FedEx Cup bonus wasn't that important to him so I think at the level of the very top players, money isn't the most important thing in life. At the same time, Rory taking the big money from Nike a couple of years ago puts him in the position that $10 million more isn't important but it may have been if he stayed with Titleist and his other sponsors at the time.

I think people facing these decisions are 90-30 OWGR guys

Outside of 90 OWGR I'd be worried about bribing ridges and ditching a company that's supported me for an extra 15k a year which is about one extra cut a year

Now it I was making 300 and they offered 500-600 then I'd take it because I think at some point you've done enough that company A would take you back .

For example I'm sure Ping would take Billy Ho back if the PXG deal failed but if he hadn't won the tour champ that year and was a journeyman PGA tour player keeping his card every year that no one would recognize outside the ropes then I don't think they'd resign him on
