Holes in one or Hole in ones?

tsmithers

Recommended Posts

Michael Breed said on The Golf Fix that the correct saying is HOLES IN ONE and not HOLE IN ONES. Which do you think is correct?

To me, holes in one means the ball went in multiple holes in one shot. Whereas the event is a "hole in one" so if there are multiple of those it would be "hole in one"s.

Thoughts?

The correct (American English) plural is "holes in one."

This is the reason dictionaries were invented, and with the advent of the internet I am surprised fewer people use them today than in pre-internet days...

Thanks for the cite...I didn't think this was a matter of opinion.

Holes certainly is plural for hole, but it makes no sense for holes to be the plural word in the phrase. Unless my ball is going in multiple holes on one shot I will continue to call them hole in ones. My phone actually just autocorrected it to be that way.

Exactly my thought but I guess since it's in the dictionary we are wrong. To me sounds like my ball went in 3 holes in one shot.

Holes in one. Hole is the noun, therefore multiple would be holes. One is a pronoun as a numerical expression, and in this case, representing "one shot", and cannot be used as "ones".

Holes in one is the accepted saying but let's break that down.

(Two, three, twelve, eighty six, whatever) holes in one (stroke).

That would be some kind of record. Each hole was played in one stroke. So you'd think the saying should be "holes in one each". To play three holes in only one stroke would be some kind of amazing.

I guess if you play net events it's less amazing...

The first sentence makes more sense to me than the second.

He played two holes in one each...not "in one". Unless that's a NEW, new ballflight law....

But, cooperate and graduate.

Holes in one.

Accepted? It's the only correct plural form.

If you have had more than one hole in one, you have had a score of one on multiple holes (emphasis on holes).

People keep saying hole in ones make more sense, but I can't for the life of me understand how. Maybe in some make-believe language that's not English.

How does hole in ones make sense? You made more than one one on the same hole? By definition, if you've hit it more than once, it's not a hole in one. There can't be plural ones in this context...it's either one or it's more than one.

Seriously, what are we talking about? LOL!

Adding the word 'each' is redundant. Unless you don't have even a simple grasp of the English Language, or you believe in magic, you shouldn't have to explain multiple 'hole in one shot' as such.

It's an object. A thing. A "hole-in-one".

When I went to school, to make an object plural, the s went on the end. Not randomly in the middle.

I get why it's holes in one, but you didn't play six holes in one stroke. You played six holes in one stroke each. Or, you got six hole-in-ones. Holes in one.

Holes in ones.

Someone else said it best, six aces...

If you make a holes in ones on a Par McFour, is it a doubles eagle? Double Eagles? Doubles McEagle? Eagles square? Dos los eagle-o?

"Hell of a shot!"

Er...shots. Or, wait... Hells of shot.

A hole in one is not a noun, and calling it one doesn't make it so. Yes we refer to it as a "thing" more so as an occurrence, but it does not fit the 'add an S to the end to make it plural' rules because it already contains a noun (hole).

It most definitely is a noun.
