Bryson DeChambeau's new Cobra MB, CB irons: shot at 2016 RBC Heritage

Recommended Posts

Seeing these pics makes me think of about a thousand questions all at once, being a bit of a BAD follower, but of most importantance I think:

1. These aren't going in the bag he's sticking with the Edels this week, but wonder what the timeline is and how many clubs are in his Cobra/Puma deal?

2. How will Cobra address the weighting issues that BAD has had with his Edels, his relatively new set from Edel were crafted to specifically address weighting issues and where it was distributed around the club face.

3. Does taking an off the shelf iron and bending to his lie angle compromise the very concept he's trying to play to? I'd agree however that if they have a sneaky way to cure the weighting issues (tungsten inserts) then this question is moot.

4. If it all works out well, he goes out with his Cobra SLIs in the next 6 months and starts racking up top 10s, when can they shut the hell up and take my freaking money, I want a set!?

***Edit - the closer I look at the full res pics I think they have already gone with tungsten plugs in the toe, a la Rickie Fowler. Great work.

there was a write up a few weeks back that they have tungsten plugs. It took Cobra 3 days to get the first club properly weighted so this wasn't a quick process by any means.

I'm a huge BAD supporter as well and have followed him since before the NCAAs.

To answer #2 to a degree, I believe that it was done by way of the positioning of the tungsten inserts primarily in the toe. Now this should be similar to what was done with the second set of Edel irons, just instead it being accomplished through placing a weight outside the club, it was done by putting it inside the head.

Why are they THAT upright? His stuff is based off a 6 iron right? Would only the 3,4,and 5 need to be bent up?

They have to be bent that upright because of the fact that he swings on a single more upright plane. Also since all the clubs are the same, the all must me bent.

Yes. As I understand it, he plays all his irons off something like a 73* lie angle, which is roughly 11* upright from most companies' standard 6 iron lie (it actually might even be more upright than that). His 3 iron would be nearly 15* upright!!! In other words, EXTREMELY upright.

I have to admit that I am fully intrigued by his set up. As someone who loves irons, but never felt that mine fully fit me, I want to believe!!!! Ha Ha!

This kid is something else !

He performed at the Australian Open late last year and did exceptionally well at the Masters !

Going to be very interesting following the progress of this already successful , unorthodox golfer .

I was expecting to see some giant tungsten plugs all over, but I can't tell if the plugs are modified from the pics.

Those lie angles are absolutely incredible. Great work by Cobra to swingweight them properly without compromising aesthetics. I had a 3 iron that looked like that once, unfortunately it was from self inflicted damage after a poor shot.

While these seem nice and I respect the amount of work that went into crafting them, I preferred the mad scientist look of his last set of Edels, to be honest. The crazy, custom one-off look just seemed to fit his persona more than a clean set of irons.

Don't forget that those last set of irons we saw weren't his first Edel set that he'd been using for awhile.

This could just be the first variation with more to come.

For sure. That previous set of Edel irons looked better than the more recent set, but there's just something about the recent ones that "fits" with how I view DeChambeau. In the end, the kid is going to get what he needs and play great golf.

I will admit, however, that I was hoping he'd buck the trend of signing with a big name OEM and stick with Edel because of how much work they did with him over the last few years. Hard to pass up those dollar bills, though. Can't blame him.

I predict we will absolutely see a single length set come to retail from cobra. This is a marketing dream if he does well. A product that no other big oem has.

Boy I'd love to see how they look from address. Like others have said, you immediately see the crank on the necks. As someone previously stated, I bet they're seeing if he wants the CB/MB and will probably custom make him his own 100% one off set (that will eventually be available retail for a steep price).

Thanks for the pics, real cool

I will never understand how Cobra built a "normal" looking set of clubs for him. Where are the tungsten weights? I need to consult some of my engineer friends about this.

I know he is very smart kid and knows what he is doing. I just had no idea they were that upright. His golf swing to me doesn't look like it would require it. I thought i read something about Moe Norman being his swing model and he was the other end of the spectrum. Be really interesting to talk shop with him. Talk about thinking outside the box.

From what the press release said, it didn't list irons, just the driver, woods, utility iron, and wedges. I'm wondering if the deal wasn't for irons given the goofiness.

It is most likely that they have just agreed to let him continue to use the Edel irons until Cobra can put him together a set to replace them. It benefits both parties if he is at the top of the leaderboard in the meantime.

I want to demo a full set of clubs at a 74 degree lie angle. Just to know. Would it ruin my swing for life or would I be the new club champion? It's one of the bucket list items I'd have if I won the lotto, which I don't play. They would probably need to invent hosel insurance.

Those are crisp. Those Edels he had were gross.

Eels were definitely hard to look at...wouldn't say these are much better. The MBs are great looking clubs and he's gone and ruined them

It's a full bag deal minus the putter. Cobra is still tweaking his Proto irons.

Not sure what you're referring to with "Cobra is still tweaking his Proto irons" but the two sets that I shot on the Cobra truck at RBC Heritage are the only clubs that Cobra has made for Bryson. There aren't any other Proto irons to be tweaked and these two sets are ready to go.

Just curious, but he was an amateur until Monday, and these pictures were posted Tuesday. So obviously the Cobra deal was lined up and they had the clubs made while he was an amateur. I suppose as long as they're not paying him that's ok? Or could that be why these are bent protos and not new upright forgings?

He's still playing his Edel irons. Cobra is at the top and bottom of his bag.
