Does a certain hole have your number?

#4 at The Crossing in Richmond, VA. It's a pretty short par 4 at only about 350 yards. The hole is basically a valley with a downhill tee shot and an uphill approach. There's a creek that crosses the fairway just in front of the back set of tees and continues to run up along the right side of the hole, which is also tree-lined. There are also trees left but there is plenty of room on that side before you're in too much trouble.

 

It's a 4-iron off the tee for me. Leaving anywhere between a 130-150 yard uphill approach in depending on where they put the pin on a long front-to-back green. It's really not that hard of a hole.

 

For whatever reason, I cannot keep the ball from going right here. To be fair, when I miss with my 4-iron off the tee, it's usually right. But I know this so I aim down the left edge of the fairway and I STILL manage to find the right side. And if you get into the tree line right, there's no grass and it slopes down to the creek. I have hit numerous shots that are barely 10 yards off the fairway and they still go in the water.

 

What's even more frustrating is that this is usually the third hole I'm hitting 4-iron off the tee on (and it's only the fourth hole on the course). I know what that shot is doing on any given day at this point and plenty of times everything's great until this god-forsaken hole.

 

Seriously, you can miss left all day and worst case scenario you are punching back out into fairway. I know this miss and just can't execute. It's definitely all mental at this point but man...I just cannot stand screwing this one up anymore.

Take a long hard look at the teebox to see if it is sloped with the ball slightly above/below your feet (depending if righty or lefty). And I would stop hitting a 4. I'd back it off to 5/6 and then have 160 instead.

There's a 200 yd par 3 at the local 9 that kills me. It's not hard at all, dead straight a little uphill, no forced carry-on but it kills me. I treasure every par I get on that hole. This weekend, chunked my tee shot so I came up 30 yards shirt- fired my pitch way over the pin, nailed a 35 footer for par...Booyah!
