Cody Gribble @ Victoria National - bad break?

Story: http://www.golfdigest.com/story/watch-cody-gribble-lose-a-webcom-tour-even-in-the-most-brutal-way-imaginable

I know it's tough to go against your natural shot shape when your heart is in your throat, and maybe he was actually playing to land it on the front but adrenaline carried it all the way back, but there's no way you play a draw downwind at that pin with trouble back right... literally the worst place to miss.

Hopefully he has a positive takeaway, like he has the game to put himself in position and it's only a matter of time until he seals the deal.

I was watching this live. In a vacuum it looked like a good shot, but as soon as I saw his swing I knew that ball was going to be spinning hard to his right--right toward the water. He overcooked it. So I'm going to say not bad luck but bad execution.

It reminds me of the guy (I can't recall his name) a couple of years ago at Torrey Pines who overcooked a wedge into the pin at 18 and spun it off the green into the water and lost. On the bright side, he won a week or two later. I remember a long thread on this site discussing that shot. Lots of differing opinions.

Edit - Kyle Stanley, 2012 Farmer's Insurance Open. Ended up tying Brandt Snedeker and losing the playoff.

Go to the 1:00 mark on this video to see the shot.

That looks like a slinging hook that spun sideways on landing as slinging hooks tend to do. Pilot error.

he hit a huge hook off the tee as well, he aimed for it but it was a big slinger. under the gun i'm sure he was nervous and that's his go to shot all be it a dangerous one but if that lands a few yards further left he's got an uphill putt for birdie.

as a side note i thoroughly enjoy watching the web tour on tv at night. just golf shots no bull sh*t fantasy land stories from the booth or 10 minute long sponsor interviews.

Horrible miss for dohble and the win, just a straight pull left choke job.

I agree with this. It's part of the reason I've been watching more LPGA events lately too. No fluff, just golf. It helps that the announcers on Golf Channel have gotten a lot better than they used to be.

Everything was sending that ball towards the water. Felt bad for him. Watched him play a few holes during the tournament. He's got some game.

right shape shot, way too deep given the hazard, wind and green speed

interesting he pulled a club that got to the water hazard

i'm guessing decision? because his execution was awesome given the requirements of the shot

he has so much game, loved to watch such high level play

It was not the right shot shape...if he hit the same shape and landed it 10y left of that pin it hits a downslope off the bunker and still runs into the water.

Needs to be a cut for a lefty or at least a hold against the wind.

That being said I think he played to win and not for the tie and that is admirable.

Is it just me or did that course look brutally hard?

I am used to playing some tough tracks, but that place, with the wind and Sunday back nine pressure seemed really, really hard.

I don't blame anyone for missing a few coming home there. Beautiful course, but if you strayed just a bit off the beaten track - Bang!

Victoria National is hands down, the absolute hardest course I've ever played. Waaay more difficult than Valhalla, which I was lucky enough to play a few times.

Under the immense pressure, he hit the shape he was comfortable with, can't fault him for that. We've seen Tiger hit plenty of stingers coming down the stretch even if a different club or shape would be more "correct." Just looked like he was juiced and hammered the shot. He'll bounce back.
