equipment performance is completely dependent on each individuals swings, and preferences. I my opinion, there is no real answer from someone else that would be true to you. In most cases, (I'm going to use Ping as an example) guys that chime in will be pro Ping, and you'll see in their signature those are the clubs they bag. vise versa with Titleist in this case. Don't go by what others say. do your own testing. don't let other peoples opinions sway your choice.

Not exactly a club performance issue but in my opinion the G club set up in terms of lofts is better than those of the AP1's. AP1 has two gap wedges and that's a nonstarter for me.

Ping G: 4-U, 21* - 50* (8 clubs)

AP1: 4-W, 22*-47* (8 clubs)

I've played both previous offerings from both company's I currently play AP1 712's they seem like shot depression is little better than the Ping G25's i played.

Now thinking of upgrading both of these sets fit my eye very well wanted to get opinions on who has played both and if there is a benefit of one over the other.

I did not own the Gs but compared both before purchasing the AP1 716s. Can say nothing bad about the Gs. Had the AP1 4 iron weakened to 23 and the 6 strengthened to 27 eliminating the 5 iron. This gave me a setup that worked for my gapping. I only chose the AP1s because of the ease of the 4 degree setup. Also liked the look of the APs better. Might be overkill to buy both but hey, this is America. Both sets are exceptional irons.

I began the year with the 716 AP1's in my bag, and traded them out after a month for the G's (yellow dot). I was never comfortable with the AP1's and could never quite get the desired ball flight. I also did not care for the 2 wedge set up with the AP1's. I have really been enjoying the G's and don't see them leaving my bag anytime soon. I agree with previous posters who have suggested trying them both out and finding out what fits your eye and taste. Best of luck!

I did a full video and launch monitor fitting when I purchased a new set about a month ago. It was between the AP1 and the Ping G. I hit a good 40 balls with each model. They are both great, great irons, but I went with the G. It just had a better flight and gave me better numbers. We tried several different shafts in each head too. I went G iron with Project X shafts.

I don't think you can go wrong with either set. The AP1 looked a little better and felt a touch better. The Ping is not far behind in the looks and had a better flight for me.

The AP1 and the G are the two best iron sets on the market right now. Test both and go with what gives you better numbers.

I've tested both, and a few others too, and found the G to be the better iron for me (so far). I would agree that the AP1 is the better looking iron but it just doesn't fly as long and tended to balloon a little too. Could be me but one pro I talked to said the same thing. Likely getting fit for the G's in the next week or so but am still curious about other similar models too. It's hard to argue with all the good press that both irons have gotten this year so I don't think you can go wrong with either.

I'm a PING guy, but I LOVED the 716s at a green grass demo day. They blew away the G series. But the crazy lofting and two gap wedges were kinda silly.

I agree with the opinion that the loft gapping on the 716's is silly. The G's have things spaced out much better, in fact they are very similar to the old school Eye 2 gaps except they are one club offset. 4-U instead of 3-PW.

Personally I think the G's are very well engineered clubs where as the 716's are just clubs that allow you to brag about how far you hit your PW.

Funny - I just hit them side by side and got the exact opposite. I WANTED to like the Ping G more (I've never played Ping irons but have regretted never getting any, all the way back to the Ping Eye days). However, the AP1's were longer (5-7 yards with 7-iron) than the G's, and felt better to me. Different strokes (literally!) for different folks!

I was between g20 and 712ap1 a few years ago when I was around a 24 cap. Bought demo 6 irons of each and played about a season with them both in the bag. They are both great clubs. The ap1 looks a lot better imo. The g series I could never tell if I hit it well, felt the same all over the face. Is that a pro or a con? Pro if you want good mishits. I want to improve my swing and the ap1 gave me some feedback while also not punishing on mishits too much. Also I had more control with the ap1, not shaping shots, but distance control. Bought the ap1, havent looked back.

I just went through an extended fitting session outdoors with Flight Scope at my club. I currently play the 712 AP1 with KBS Tours and have for the last 4 years. The irons I tried were the; 716 AP1, XR, G, Apex and M2 in both graphite and steel. The 716 AP1 was very similar to the 712, maybe 1/2 club longer due to the 2 degrees stronger loft. Not surprisingly, the two longest were the M2 and XR, but for me the M2 peak height was too low. I really wanted to buy the Apex, it looks and feels very good, but my dispersion was not as good as some of the others (yes, I know that is me). The best for me was the G, I haven't owned a Ping iron since the I3O and haven't liked the look of the previous irons in the series till this one. It isn't my favorite looking iron, but something I don't find objectionable. Order placed.
