If I get to play golf I'm lucky.

Our 8th grade football coach told our team that luck was nothing more than the intersection point of preparation and performance and that the mediocre and worse do not get "lucky," at least not consis

Now i know on the surface this is a ridiculous question. Because chance applies to everyone the same and all of that....a ball going into the woods doesn't know who hit it.   Yet some players i know

The theme song of my life applies to m golf as well. 🤣

Harder I work the luckier I get is a thing.

The more focused I am, the luckier I get.

Can’t remember the last time I got “lucky” when out drinking cocktails and just having fun.

Love the game and it’ll love you back.  I’ve always thought that the “unlucky” moments are the game’s way of testing your loyalty and toughness.   While you’ll never “beat” golf, if you become one with the game and treat it as a passionate quest the game will love you back.

Haha, i started this thread 4 years ago. There's been some strange thread bumps lately!

My OP was somewhat tongue in cheek, however mathematically there is still an argument to be made that luck exists. Some people will get more "good breaks" than others because of just mathematical probability. This theoretically will even out over time but only if you play enough golf

If a billionaire told you to flip a coin 20 times and if it comes up heads at least 10 times he'll give you 10M dollars....Mathematically that should be the average....but there's a chance it could come up tails 15 times. If that happened to you, you got unlucky. Over time the math would even out....not that it helps your case at all

Has it evened out over the last four years or are there still shots named after you? 😂

As for myself, I’ve found that as I’ve gotten better and more consistent that I’ve gotten more lucky on the golf course. Hitting a bad shot with the right shape, to the right spot yields better results than hitting a good shot with the wrong flight to the wrong spot.

I would call this a good lie compared to what I seem to end up in. This one is not in a divot - bonus!

I would probably rate my "luck" level as neutral...I get good breaks and bad breaks and don't feel like one side heavily outweighs the other. But I do play with a guy that just never seems to be out of a hole, mostly because he can sink +20' putts better than anyone of any skill level that I've ever seen. It can't be luck because he does it so often, but when you're playing a match against him it sure can feel like luck and it's frustrating as hell.

Jeff this describes me to a tee!  I have it happen to me every round what are called “Brenden” lies.  In a divot middle of the fairway...stymied by a tree...hit a tree and goes to a worse spot you name it...my playing partners all are amazed at how bad it is.

Not to say I don’t occasionally get good breaks ... just the ratio is 10 or 15 bad to 1 good...

I feel your pain!

Don't know if it's bad luck but I hit a lot of shots that are 3 feet from being a good shot.  Shots that land on the 3 foot wide strip between a bunker and green and roll back into the bunker.  Another 3 feet and it's on the green.

Played in a scramble with two friends and their pastor.  The pastor was a cool guy so I asked him if ever got any "lucky" bounces.  He laughed and said God continued to test him, especially on the golf course.  Next hole was a par 3 and he pulled it left of the hole and the ball landed on the cart path.  For no apparent reason, the ball bounced right at a 45° angled and landed on the green.

I think my luck and unluck balance out pretty even.

I am not the type of man that sees his life as lucky or unlucky.   Life is filled with events, actions, behaviors and choices that can turn out lucky/good or unlucky/bad.  It's the judgment leading up to those times that makes each of us what we are, in life.

The more often my judgment is correct when making a decision, preparation or choice, the greater my confidence level is in trusting my judgment; makes life easier.  I am not looking for luck to make my life or golf game.   Someone that's lucky sees what's in front of them, and prepares for it.   Someone that's unlucky can't see what's in front of them, and doesn't prepared for what is there.  Success is where Preparation and opportunity meet.

Like that often used line, it's better to be lucky than good; what a joke.  Being lucky is a crap shoot, while being good means you don't have to rely on luck happening.

Your luck will change if you make it a point to actually aim for the lip of a bunker, tree limb or cart path.

You'll avoid them all.
