Who is the undercover LPGA pro ?

Recommended Posts

So Yeon Ryu. Truly the most visible and expressive Korean lady out there. Little ditterence in approaching her if she is leading or fighting the cut line. Takes compliments very graciously, similar to how well Natalie Gulbis does. Always willing to take pics or chat for a minute. You will not get one word answers, She conveys that she appreciates all fan interest, and wins over fans with relative ease. She didn't pick up the nickname "Supermodel of the Fairways" in Korea by accident.

Well earned nickname. :)

Any insights about the recent tweets from Brittany Lincicome/Angela Sanford and Christina Kim about cheating on the LPGA? Does the lack of media and fan attention lead to more temptation to push the boundries?

Funny you should ask... I've been on Christina Kim's Twitter feed for a long while now. She's great. About an hour ago, I sent her a tweet asking what she thought of the article. A few minutes later, she posted that she had 45 minutes to kill, so she'd take questions from people. She ignored my question. I suppose she didn't see it or chose to answer other ones? I'd like to think that anyway....

On "School of Golf", Martin Hall asked her what the deal was with the backwards hat, she replied: "I have hundreds of them".

Can we agree that it was a FAQ from the viewers, and not Martin's personal vintage?

Her reply sounded more like: "GoF...Yslf, I'm doing it this way, and it's none of your business!"

Great Fan interaction right there, CK. Way to go *twitch*!

Given no other choice, but to listen to Christie Kerr or C.Kim, I'll listen to Kerr all week.

Also, I think we're too quick to group the Americans together. While Stacy may have favor with the "plastics" I feel like she's more in the Gerina, Angela Stanford, Brittany Lang, Kristy McPherson crowd.

Interesting group of four you selected there. In my opinion, two of that foursome I have all the time in the world for. Two I have zero time for

In terms of the American Club, it seems to me that Jaye Marie Greene hangs with the members; also Brittany Lang is close with Lincicome.

In my limited observations Angela Stanford comes off as very standoffish. Hopefully Natalie Gulbis is really as nice as she appears.

If I may..... Angela Stanford is very stand-offish and has a reputation of being one of the most anti-Asian players from the US out there.

I have never gotten any bad vibes or ill will from Jaye Marie

Brittany Lang does hang with Brittany Lincicome, no doubt, but you won't likely see B Lang around the rest of the Club. Everyone knows they can approach her and there will be no problem. Her and her brother Luke are among my absolute favorites to chat with. I can remember telling her she would be the first Blue Devil to cash. The next year, after she had won, she brought it up and said "Thanks for telling me what was in store"

Yes, Nats is in a class all by herself out there. If anyone didn't have to be nice and rely on other talents, it's her. But she is the prototype for what the tour wants in interaction. Does she have an "on switch"? Yes, I would say she does, but she is on 95% of the time. In my estimation, the best pro-am player you could get. Her pro-am teams consistently have a huge amount of fun

Please tell me Gerina isn't one of the Mean Girls. That would really suck if she was. Where does Gulbis fit in all this?

Relax, Gerina is not like that. Her Christian faith is very strong and she practises what she preaches. She is more shy than you would think though.

Natalie is above the Princess Club. She is a Queen. For years, if there is a Boys & Girls Club in the tour stop city, she's there, and not for a 20 minute photo op. For as long as it takes to talk to everyone who wants to meet her. In my town, she was two hours late for the Tuesday night pro-am draw dinner, because there were 4 kids who were delayed getting to the B&G club. She waited.

Correct you are. My mistake. I guess I pulled the old "too many to tell them apart" excuse :swoon:

I apologize for the incorrect reference and have edited the original post.

Because it comes from GD, not gonna give it much credence. They have proven over the last couple of years that they are desperate and will run just about anything they think will cause a stir. I'm sure much of it rings true, but I bet it's a composite of stories from multiple sources and then sensationalised to the max. I get that as a business they need revenue but I just don't like the spirit of it. I have attended LPGA, I watch it when it's on TV, I even lurk sometimes in that Seoul Sisters forum (there's good inside poop there sometimes). In other words I'll stick to forming my own nasty opinions about the participants.

I know plenty of people got beef on GD. But it is still the best golf publication out there. The "Undercover Pro" is a must read. I look for it first thing right out of the mailbox.

Yes, they put DJ's girlfriend and some Instagram golfer on the cover. But just look at it as their "swimsuit issue", everyone should be allowed a mulligan once a year.

It wasn't always true, but I think Golf Magazine is way better these days. Quality instruction and equipment coverage that doesn't read like a sales pitch.

Been reading GD since 1973. It has dumbed itself down and abandoned class. The only reason I still read it is because I get it for free.

"You think we play the same stuff you do?"

Canadianglen, do you have stories for Thai players? I've always wandered how the girls are doing?

It was only a few players a year ago, but now that more Thai got the card, do they stick together or just do their own things?

I am not an expert, just a Pornanong fan, but I was at the Kingsmill tournament and noticed that a number of the Thai players who missed the cut followed Pornanong/Ariya on Sunday. Also on Instagram, there were a lot of pictures of the Thai players having fun together at Busch Gardens. Again, from what I understand, Pornanong's brother, Pornpong, who used to caddy for her and played on the Men's Asian Tour, trains a number of the Thai players. My impression, again not from any inside knowledge, just from observation, is that the Thais players are pretty close. I can also say from personal experience is that they have all been very kind to fans who ask for autographs/pictures regardless of the circumstances. On Sunday, Pornanong, who had to be disappointed, still spent at least a half an hour signing autographs and taking pictures with the fans and everyone got a smile and a thank you.

Thank you. Yeah I noticed whenever one of the players are on TV on weekend you could find a few Thai players following the group. I hope they're enjoying it out there, they are pretty much the nation's darlings right now.

At least the American girls aren't throwing luggage at each other

Explain this story. I haven't heard it.

Earlier this season, In Gee Chun missed a number of events due to a back injury caused when Ha Na Jang's father "accidentally" dropped a piece of luggage down an escalator which hit In Gee. Apparently, there was an issue over the apology and HNJ's celebration at the next event. See link below.

Yeah Frankie, it was a show. In addition to the back injury, there were a LOT of hurt feelings about it. There was an "apology", but not really an apology that could have been, etc. In addition to it, HNJ had won in quick succession and it wasn't perceived that she was humble enough. She was showy with dancing and a kick butt Samurai move and she was put on blast for it. Personally, I liked it. :)

This post probably won't go over well here, but I was at the international crown a couple of years ago. I was hanging around the 18th green after the Thai team beat the US team to put the US team into the playoff for the final spot. Paula/Stacy were obviously and understandably upset at having lost the match and also not playing in the playoff. Two young fans, for whatever reason, chose that particular moment to approach Paula for an autograph. There were no cameras, and very few spectators left, as most had gone back to the 16 hole where the playoff would take place. Paula, in spite of being very upset, still took the time to sign the autographs and give the girls a smile. I think back to times when I was having a very bad day, and I don't think I would have been as gracious, but she was. I'm not a Paula fan, and that was the only time I've followed her at an event.

I remember the dance and I loved it. Hearing the controversy surround it, I don't care. I still love the dance. He dad may be a complete jackass, but that doesn't change what I feel about her celebrating. It's unfortunate that she received flak for that and it changed how she carries herself. That sucks as she brought some personality to the LPGA.

What? This never happens! She's a diva! ;)

I've seen it too. At the end of the day, they're people and get caught up in emotions. She does, despite some people's experiences, understands she's part of the brand. When she's playing, she's playing and when she's in fan mode, she's in fan mode. You can't be mad at that, though some would like to be.

It's a heckuva hard thing to turn off the competitive instincts and be charming at the drop of a hat....or the end of a round.

I say we give 'em all a pass and hit the reset button....I'm sure the LPGA Tour has WrX stalkers reading this topic daily and passing out tips to the players telling them to do something nice on Instagram/Twitter/Facebook.

No kidding. In Thailand's women sports right now, we have 2 players sharing the same nickname who are the talk of the town.

Ariya Juthanugarn (golf)- back to back LPGA tour wins.

Ratchanok Inthanon (badminton)- the only woman singles to ever won 3 consecutive super-series events.

I would have to agree with the comments from others. As far as I have ever seen, the Thai ladies act like a family. Always supporting each other, always in it for the bigger goal. And they do it without excluding anyone friend or foe. They all truly appreciate where they are and are prepared to put in the work and take the lumps. Another big factor in how other players view Team American Princess.

On the Tuesday of the CWO in London in 2014, I went off the 1st tee with Moriya and Ariya on a practice round. A small entourage in total with them, about 4 people. It reminded me of Caddyshack. Let's see how silly we can get involving golf clubs. By the third hole, there were water fights, backswing distractions, friendly wagers, stepping on balls in the fairways, you name it. I don't think they learned a lot about the London Hunt & CC course, or got in any good practice, but they cerainly had a good time.

My money's on Paula Reto. From South Africa, went to High School and College in the US.

Most South Africans speak Afrikaans and English. The UTP says she doesn't speak a second language.

Jodi is BFF of Korda, which naturally brings her in the crosshair of the "mean girls". It is Jodi.

Not entirely correct.

If Paula was Afrikaans (like Lee-Anne Pace), then yes she would speak both. I stand corrected, but I doubt she is Afrikaans from what I've seen / read / heard from her.

I think Paula is a good guess.

was this a leaders meeting for "The Club"?? Trump tie in is approriate as well

definite tangible demonstration of The Club's prerequisite of Republican all-or-nothing political support. Unfortunately, it is not any deeper than most partisans. Perhaps Kerr would be aware of, and be able to debate about, some GOP "policies", but I wouldn't expect it from any others.
