Best distance ball for a slow swinger?

Swing speed in the 70s for irons.

Is it realistic to think I can get more distance from a true "distance" ball rather than just using whatever comes to hand (B330, Z-Star, FG Tour...... etc)

If so how much extra distance? Are there any graphs or statistics on this?

soft.... Softfli, little firmer..Chromesoft 15...no stats. But, I am a slow swinger

Have to agree. I have had great luck with Bridgestone Lady and Srixon Lady. Found Chrome Soft pretty good too.

Hmm - ladies balls. That's an idea. Not that I want to go Volvik pink......

I guess I should be looking at low compression then?

Wilson Duo - 53

Nike PD Soft - 72

Bridgestone E-6 - 72

Wilson 50 - 73

B330 RXS or AD333 - 80

Titleist NXT - 80

Hard to get any more updated information on actual compression numbers - where is this available?

You can go a lot lower than that. The new Duo is 29 compression and the Softfli is 35.

Be careful on low compression. In my opinion a 2 piece ball with low compression does not have great feel.

You could try a 3 piece low compression ball. Like Gamer Soft which is low and 3 piece (actual compression is still a mystery), Duo Spin is 35 and 3 piece, Duo U 55 compression and 3 pieces.

I'm sceptical whether companies are using the same compression formula - or even whether it's possible to measure it accurately.

I've also noted that the formula changes year on year, so figures are different there anyway.

I've ordered a bunch of Softfli to see how they go.

Today I played a Callaway HX Hot. Went pretty well - medium compression.

I hit a ProV1x and Wilson 50 Elite side by side one hole last week. The ProV1x was hit nicely with a baby draw and the 50 Elite with a baby fade. The 50 elite was 10 yards longer despite not being hit as well. This has been my experience with testing Tour level balls vs distance balls.

For me, I find I play better when I have a shorter iron going into the green, even if it doesn't bite as hard. It's been the difference between have a PW into the green vs an 8 or 9i. All I do now is adjust for the roll.

Now FEEL is a totally different story. I haven't found a ball that feels as good off all clubs as the ChromeSoft. Sadly they increased the price for the '16 version and the '15 version is about 20 yds shorter than the 50 Elite/GamerSoft I've been playing recently.

Driver: Callaway Mavrik Max 10.5* Riptide Regular

Hybrid: Adams Tight Lies 2 4h 22* Stiff
Irons: Sub70 699u 5i/6i, 699 7-PW
Wedges: Callaway MD2 52* Tour Grind, Callaway MD2 58* Tour Grind

Volvik is a great ball for slow swingers. I'm not sure there is a better ball for the money than the Volvik Crystal with an 80 mph swing. I'm anxious to try the upgrades in the Volvik line. It's right there with the PROV1X in distance and significantly cheaper. I love it for iron play and putting, but different strokes for different folks. Hopefully it's strokes saved.

For the money, it's hard to beat a Wilson 50 Elite. It's long and soft and spins okay around the greens (for a Surlyn ball). If you don't like them, then try a Bridgestone e6 or a Callaway Superhot 55. All three have compression levels around 50. If you want softer, try the Callaway Supersoft, Wilson Duo, or Bridgestone Extra Soft.

Honestly, despite what you hear on this and other sites, independent tests have repeatedly shown that there really isn't that much difference in distance among any modern golf balls.

The difference lies in feel and spin. Almost everyone is looking for the holy grail of less spin off the driver (for straightness and length) and more spin around the greens. Most amateurs with handicaps in the teens and higher would be well advised to emphasize the former quality over the latter, and the balls mentioned above will do that, especially for slower swing speeds.

I played a round yesterday that was very slow with nobody behind us. A league was in front of us....i played 2 balls each and my partner played two each. I played the Titleist NXT and Velocity. My partner played a top flight and a noodle

The velocity was by far the longest ball out there...it destroyed the NXT which was more of a penetrating flight while the velocity was higher and longer. The top flight was really bad while the noodle was a joke.

Moving forward, ill spend the $$ on velocity. I am not sure I have ever seen a real hardcore noticeable difference in distance like this. The velocity is not as "soft" feeling as say a prov1, but it flies!!

Top Flite makes a couple of dozen balls. Which model was played by your partner? I played the NXT Tour for a number of years and was blown away by the Top-Flite Gamer and then the Gamer Soft. I do agree with you that the Velocity is one of the best higher compression distance balls - IMO better than Acushnet's Pinnacle Gold.

Did some chipping practice today with Supersofts. Plenty of roll-out. This is likely to be the case with all the Ionomer covered balls. I could do with a little more control.

So I'm looking to stock up on a few of the lower compression Urethane balls, pearl/Grade A off ebay.

- Z-star

- TM TP Red

- Chrome Soft or Hex Chrome

- B330 RX/RX

- FG Tour older model

- RBZ Urethane

Any I should particularly look for or add to the list?

I see this question a lot here and honestly I don't even know why.

In my very honest opinion, most of us should forget distance... play the ball that gives us the most accuracy and the appropriate amount of spin for how we play, and play the set of tees that fits our game best.

Distance should be down on the list of things we are looking for in your golf games.

Distance is a lot more important for short hitters. On par 4s and par 5s you need to get to the green in as few shots as possible. I'm a short hitter and I regularly get passed by all my playing companions. Now you know why.........

totally disagree. if you can hit a wedge to a green instead of a 7 iron, its a win.

Completely disagree. I'm a short hitter and prefer to get all the distance I can get. As someone mentioned already, it's the difference between a wedge or a 7-9i on my second shot. Would much rather have a wedge.

Sure your accuracy from within 100 should be spot on, but what good is it if that's your 3rd shot instead of your 2nd shot on a par 4?

I think the question regarding distance is how much distance do you gain versus how accurately you can chip/pitch the ball nearer the hole.

If distance is mainly a question of compression, and control on the greens is about a Urethane cover, then is it as simple as "use a low compression ball with a Urethane cover"?

yes and the answer is either Duo U or ChromeSoft

I understand the disagreement from everyone, but I have to look at the reality of most courses and play... there are far fewer par 5's per 18 than 4's and 3's combined..most strokes in a round are taken from 150 yards in... not on reaching long par 5's.. and a 15 yard longer shot in the rough or off the green is not going to help you vs. a 15 yard shorter shot in the fairway or on the green. You can all disagree but that is how I see it folks.

I played a round with the titleist velocity the other day, and that thing flies....I compared it to a pro v1 in the "drop test" and dropped the two balls from the same height on a concrete surface. The Velocity bounced back a few inches higher.....its more explosive off the face of the club and you can feel it. not bad for 25 a dozen
