Top Military Golf Courses??

I know there are some hidden gems out there. What are your favorites and why?

Bayonet at Fort Ord in Seaside, CA. It is not an active military base, but it is a great golf course.

Interested to hear that. I used to live near Camp Zama and often wondered what the course was like. At first, I was amazed that there was a course on base, but I later learnt that it was not unusual.

The Presidio in San Francisco. It is open to the public now. The best one I've ever played is Marshallia Ranch which is associated with Vandenburg AFB in Lompoc, CA just North of Santa Barbara. Beautiful course in the woods near the coast. In SoCal, I'm partial to the Navy course in Cypress, which is where Tiger grew up playing. Nice mix of tight tree lined holes and open ones exposed to the sea breeze. 16-17-18 is one of my favorite finishing stretches on any public course in the area.

Zama was one of my favorites. Atsugi, Tama, and Zama were the only courses I could afford to play each weekend in Japan. Zama had the train station right behind the back gate, too. All courses had great views, and were in excellent shape. Funny thing is that I have escorted some civilians buds from the private clubs to play Klipper a few times.

The former course at Ft Devens, MA was sold off after they made it a reserve only base and is now public, great track.

The Eisenhower course at the AF Academy is one of the top rated in the country. Beautiful course and tough too. I loved Banyan Tree Golf Course in Okinawa too. Sea and Air at NAS North Island is a great one, right along the ocean.

I will take hubbard memorial at Hill AFB and it's amazing greens and views and f16s and a10s all day. I like hubbard alot more than I like the academy

The course on Parris Island is a really good course. If it were on Hilton Head, it would be on many must play lists.

The course at Picatinny Arsenal in NJ. Played it as a guest of a 'gubmint employee a couple times 10+ years ago and really liked it. I've heard in recent years they have started selling memberships to the general public. It's in an area with limited/crowded golf options if you can't afford the pricey privates so that's good news.

When the course gets the proper budget Hill AFB is a top 10 course for northern Utah. I've played it in lean years and it just left me shaking my head.

Just look for Air Force courses.....rumor is the first thing they build on a new base is a golf course...:)

AF courses have been suffering. Money has been very tight since the war and they have cut way back on ground personnel. The only bases getting money for courses is where there a number of Generals or Senators/Rep. in the area (like around DC).

There are a few exceptions, but military courses must be self-sufficient and do not receive tax payer money.

The original 18 at Gordon Lakes (Fort Gordon-Augusta, Georgia) is a very solid RTJ, Sr. layout that captures his design style to a "T" replete with runway tees, tiered greens along with lots of doglegs and water. Good variety, have not been out there lately but conditions are usually pretty good.

 

There is a newer nine by Ault Clark that is okay, but less appealing (to me anyway) than the first 18.

Eglin AFB in Florida is a great track

Bayonet and Blackhorse are as good as it gets. Military rates are amazing!

Moose Run Creek Course at JBER, AK is an amazing test of golf. It's actually on golf digests list of 100 most difficult golf courses ranking somewhere around 50. Tips play at over 7300 yards and a course rating of 78! Layout is fantastic.

There was a course in Hawaii that I played with my father-in-law (retired Army) where you could watch the jets taking off behind you. LOUD, but very cool.

I live in Hilton Head SC and the Parris Island course is fantastic.

My wife's grandfather was retired Navy and the course in Annapolis MD was always fun to play. Neat elevation changes and usually in great shape.

Air Force academy course is fantastic

 

The Eisenhower course at the academy is one the best around.
