Ah, good ol 501. Legends is out there, ain't it? That's where I learned to love links golf.

Also remember having to spend far more time at Waccamaw than a kid would ever want to.

Oh yes Legends is still out there. Yes, it is a links style courses but a true links course runs right beside the ocean. Now days it is crowded because they own rental condos in like a little village there and they have a couple of restaurants and a couple of pubs too. If someone was coming for a golf vacation only like a buddies trip I would recommend it. They also have a great locals membership program which is a little high priced but nevertheless a good deal. Only drawback now is 5 and 6 hour rounds are the norm anytime of the year because it stays crowded with tourists and locals.

Also on 501 you have MB National with 3 courses, Wild Wing I believe with 2 courses now, Arrowhead and River Oaks. I think River Oaks is fixing to close down for more houses. I had forgotten just off of 501 in Carolina Forest you have Wizard, Man O War and World Tour.

Waccamaw Pottery itself has long closed down and the only thing I can remember now in that place is a store called Celebrations which is a Goth and Halloween themed store. I have not been that far up in that area for darn near 5 years now

Have been there several times. I have pics of the wife and I in the engine room of the USS Drum. I hope I can find it but I have a picture of my 1979 International that I built from a wreck under the wing of the B-52 outside. Do they still have the SR-71 Blackbird there? I hauled part of the wings there in like 84 or so.

Thank god haha! I hated that place so much. At least when I'd get dragged to Barefoot (the OG ... I know there's a whole hell of a lot more there now) there was an arcade I could waste time in while mom wandered around finding ways to spend dad's money 😂

You know where golf started for me, I'm sure ...

It's still there along with a surprising amount of other planes on the grounds and in the hangar (A-4, A-6, F-86L, F-15, amongst others).

Surprisingly enough, this was actually my first time visiting the USS Alabama despite it being so relatively close to me. I guess my affinity for warplanes always took me to Eglin, Warner Robins and Pensacola instead. I absolutely loved just how much access one can get on both ships. They especially do a good job of bringing the USS Alabama to life.

They did a good job on the USS North Carolina too. It is about 75 miles North of me. I visited it several times as a kid and several times as an adult. I love old War planes. Being in the trucking and heavy haul business I have visited several including Rantoul Illinois and Ogden Utah to name a few. Lots of times in our business we hauled parts for displays. Got to know caretakers of those planes in some instances. I have pics of me sitting in the cockpit of "Haggerty's Hag which is a B-29 in Ogden Utah. We got an escorted tour of the Boneyard one time when we were waiting to load a section of B-52 going to Barksdale. We had arrived on time but they were behind on getting part of the tail section off. The Major in charge had this LT haul us around in a staff car to look. We were not allowed to get out but the tour was great.

I think it is still there. It is funny me saying I had not been to Pottery Row in 5 years or more. LOL it is not like it is hundreds of miles away. It is probably like maybe 8 or 10. We tend to be true what the locals call Murrells Inlet-- Garden City hermits. The furthest we have been up North in the last 3 years is the little Par3 course we play up by the airport which is like 7 miles away. I think I have been to Pawleys Island 8 miles south of me one time in 4 years. LOL had the oil changed in the Caddy in like January. I went full synthetic. This little independent oil change place are great folks. They sent me an e mail the other day saying my oil needed changing. I laughed. I had only put like 350 miles on the car since the oil was changed. I did check it and it is as clean as the day it was changed. I did send them an e mail back and told them the fact. Since I quit my sound gig a month ago that is like 60 or less miles I put on it a month. I did fill up with gas yesterday after a month and a half and it did take $22 I think it was with my discount

That's really cool that your work let you get so up close with the planes and museums.

Boneyards really are a sight to behold. A couple years ago a friend of ours (former C-130 mechanic who now works for Raytheon in Tucson) was able to give us a tour of the boneyard at Davis-Monthan. I felt like a kid in a candy store.

I took over as the first chief on 145 fresh from McDonnell Douglas in 1978 at Eglin to replace our F-4Es.  A whopping 5 hours on the airframe.

Oh yeah, this is the good stuff. Always loved F-4s, and 10 year old me was 100% sure that he was going to grow up to be an F-15E pilot.

Anybody who says they don't have a soft spot for the A-10 isn't a true warplane aficionado.

Read this book earlier this year from a guy who was at forefront of the A-10's introduction to service. Very entertaining.

Yep the most effective combat support Airframe ever built, so of course the geniuses mothball it. Why not upgrade it and make it better?

There is always be a need for boots on the ground and close air support is more important than a computer in the mud, at least in my untrained not Vet mind.

We have one on display in the Veterans Warbird Park in Myrtle. It is there along with a F-100 Super Sabre and I forgot what the other one is. That is at the entrance of the former AFB in Myrtle. The story I got from one of the AF vets who was stationed there and works in the park was that it landed and was taxing and both wing spars broke and the wings drooped and fell to the ground. I do not know how true that is. I do know I saw it when they were doing construction converting the base to Market Common as it is known as now. It was sitting by the Military hanger at the end of the base stripped out sans wings. Seeing it now those Vets did a great job restoring it to display status.
