The lockdown in South Australia has been cancelled, one of those contacted who was positive lied about where he was when he was infected, this caused problems because of the way it was deemed to have been passed on. As there is currently no law against telling lies about it he may get away with it, even though he has caused millions of dollars.🤬

Yessir.  Tee off at 9:20 with a residual number of the buds.  It's all gravy at this point, being able to play on 11/20.  Temps well into the 60's, mostly sunny.  Should be splendid.  

 

My go, no go line is 50* as well.  Below that, getting out would be a solo endeavor.  None of the buds are cold weather golfers.  Can stay plenty warm enough walking in the 40's.  But the conditions need to be optimum (sun, minimal wind, upper 40's rather than lower).  The idea of playing cold weather/winter golf doesn't hold much appeal.

 

Possibly the last outing for the season.  Bottom falls out weather-wise after today.  Some snow into next week, the holiday, etc.  Never know though.  Couple of years back, played the last round on 12/15 in relatively balmy 60* conditions.  Not storing the clubs away quite yet.

The decision was made last night to cancel our planned trip to BC to see the kids before Christmas.  Yesterday afternoon, BC announced travel restrictions and further measures to deal with the growing caseload in the province.  I suspect that something similar is coming for Ontario today as a presser is scheduled for 1 pm.

 

WE were to fly out on Monday.  So close and yet so far.  This is going to be extremely hard on DW.

My family always play on Boxing Day, it's been a family tradition since I was a kid. 

 

My dad always played with my brother on Boxing Day (my brothers only round of the year usually) when i was young, once I started playing I joined in. My father passed on in 2007 and my brother and I kept it going for a few years before he dropped out. The tradition seemed to have run it's course circa 2010. 

 

Jump forward to 2016 and my new wife decides to take up golf. We restated the tradition and look forward to a post Xmas day round of golf, on an empty golf course and a still full belly. 

 

The weather is usually terrible (it is England) but we're not there for the scores. Last year was special as my brother and both his sons joined us. Yes it was a 5 ball but the shop let us play together as there was only us and on other pair playing the course (They were a couple also)

Played in England(Birmingham back the 60s, then we could only play public courses and they did not take bookings, we used to be there around 6am and wait with the crowd, fight to put your name on the booking board outside the course, usually on the pavement and then you would be called when your turn came. Never knew how long it would be, sometimes it could be 4/5 hrs before your turn came round. One day we had walked away, cant remember why, but it was our turn when we were not there, they put us back on the board but it was another two hours wait.

This has been extremely difficult for my DW.  She knows in her heart of hearts that this is the right choice, but that doesn't make it easier.  One of the first people she consulted with was a work friend who was also traveling out of province around about the same time.  She is still going which makes it even harder on my DW.

 

I'm finding out who my friends really are.  People are inherently motivated to do whatever is in their best interest.  The question becomes defining best interest and I'm seeing people doing things directly in conflict of my interests because it suits them.  This may sound petty, but it really comes down to someone else taking on more risk than we are willing to assume.  I've spent enough time involved in the financial markets to learn how that generally works out.  Some will benefit from taking on that risk.  The majority will not.  It can be difficult to reconcile when you see your friends doing that.  Some are going to get hurt!

You always have the risk takers but with some things such as the covid situation we have decided the risk is not worth the possible outcome, as I posted back a while the local art society was trying to shame me into attending, at our ages with underlying health issues there was no way in hell we were going to risk it.

 

I know how your wife feels as we have the same discussions.

He dutiful bowed his head and said "Grace Devine the biggest piece is mine" and darn near grabbed the biggest piece of pot roast out of the pan. He got smacked hard by his mamma and Granny. My Granny smacked the fire out of me too for laughing. He got told to sit on the porch and he could eat after everyone else. Which with that crowd there was not much left. I picked myself off the floor and ate. Note That same cousin has been a Baptist preacher for over 40 years now.

My old man ran a course and we lived in the middle of it no joke. Christmas Day the gate was open and scorecards and pencils were on a table outside. You could walk free. Most of the time we were at my Grandmother's some 200 miles away. Only 2 times were we home on Christmas Day. One year it was cold and rainy and the course was crowded. Me and the old man got out on my cart and rode around and the old man remarked " everyone and his brother must have gotten golf equipment for Christmas this year" The year before I went in the Navy we stayed home and it was 70* and no one was out. My bud whose dad owned the place called about 10:00 and he lived on the opposite side of the course from where we did. He rode over and we played until dark and never saw any other players. Great day for cross country golf. I do not recall ever playing golf on Christmas again

Empathy is all that I can offer.  The anticipation of the trip, then pulling the plug at the 11th hour.  The recognition of this being the smart and rational move doesn't lessen the disappointment.  Dam(n) Covid.

   I live in a traditionally low crime area yet since March, my son's car was stolen, a neighbors truck was stolen , my brothers car was hit and run and other vehicles have been ransacked-

 

 I am hopeful for a vaccine and a common sense return to the USA in January

   Until that time I have returned to the attitude of my biker years -FTW and a descendent of Sam Colt spending time behind my hip picket

     Sincerely hope that tourists avoid sunny Florida for a while

Trying to carrying on as if normal, so spent the afternoon putting up outdoor Christmas decorations.

 

 

Kind of surreal what with lush green grass, balmy winds and succulents and roses still blooming away despite the yoyo temperature swings of the past three weeks.  It has occurred to me that I might have to move things around to cut the grass again!🤔

 

Went to the garden centre to pick up some royal fir boughs to decorate the coach lights with and talking to one of the girls she told me that the perennials get moved under the display tables and then draped with plastic for winter storage.  They have sun screen and wind break, but its outdoor storage of plant materials.  Only tropicals are kept inside the greenhouses.  It's shocking to think how different the climate is down here by the lake while only being 45 minutes drive away from the farm.

Three weeks into curling; 8 games played.  Three times a week seems to be the right frequency to keep the game relatively sharp without punishing the body too much.  Last night was tough because we were playing shorthanded.  Makes for a lot of sweeping!

 

Lots of adjustments being made as we adapt to the public health measures while playing.  Masks are worn at all times which is restrictive of breathing and causes constant fogging of glasses.  I have ordered some masks with a relief valve to see if that helps with the situation.  Anti-fog spray on my glasses is a half measure as it isn't really effective until the glasses cool down to air temperature which is about 34° in the rink.

 

Getting to meet a few more people as we play more and getting used to the quirks of the ice in this rink.  Played much better this week than the previous two.

 

Had given a brief thought to trying to throw out of the hack again, but not prepared to do that without significant practice first.  Considering the general soreness of my knees and hips while using a stick am thinking better of it and will carry on as is.  I'm going to have to use one eventually, so why fight it.  Consistency and execution are quick cures to silly notions of youth I find. 😏

The best preachers always had a little vinegar in their engines when young. The story I told was actually ripped off from a country comedian named Jerry Clower.

Nice!!  The front landscaping work looks neat and tidy.  Seems rather odd that one has to move the Christmas yard art to mow one more time.  I've wrapped the outside work for the year.  Mower is prepped and stored.  What will be will be, lawn-wise.  Showed the Mrs. your hanging fir boughs, was told "Yes, get some".  

 

Started digging out the decorations from the basement today, hauling them upstairs.  The Christmas tree is assembled, took all of 5 minutes.  These three piece pre-lit trees are a wonderful thing.  To think, not to many years ago, we would make the trek to the tree farm and cut our own.  It was a lot of fun at the time, but that time has now past.  Same for stringing lights outside.  BITD, lights across the length of the front, both gable ends and along the roof ridge line.  Four bushes in front and a large pine that sits out by the road.  

 

Now, I'm doing good to string a few strands in the bushes near the front entrance.  And no way am I getting up on the roof.

Move the decorations once to mow, try every week. Christmas in the summer stops much of the outside decorations so we only put them up indoors, much to the pleasure of our cats.

Madness at the new In N Out burger joint. Two stores one the wait was 4 hrs, the other 14.5 hours. The first person served at one of them had been waiting from 8,30 pm Tuesday until opening 10am Friday. The mindset of some people leaves me wondering where the human race is heading.🤨

So you guys have In n out burger joints like we have on the West Coast of the USA? No way I would wait that amount of time for ANY fast food burger. I think the mindset of the human race is reverting to sheep mentality.

Two weeks ago my course did the winter over seeding so it was CPO. They had told everyone and had signs posted. Was playing one of my 9 hole rounds. Well we had a bottleneck up around 15 so I decided to go over to the front. There was a group of older out of towners right slab in the middle of 16 fairway. When they pulled back in I asked if they knew it was cart path only in a nice way? The one old woman hatefully asked who the hell I was? I informed her I was a member . She replied that the group in front of them was riding the fairways. I did not blink an eye because there was NO one in front of them. I told her that she then said well we are old. That did not phase me I told her I had a broken back and still went by the rules. She relented again and said the other group rode in the fairway. I told her well if the other group jumped off the Empire State building would they do the same? Sheeple. Made a phone call when I got on 18 tee. When they came in they were informed by management that we appreciated their business but if they could not follow the rules they could take their business elsewhere. We are doing a big membership drive and hope to get enough members that we do not have to rely on such people for revenue

The Burger joints that opened were in Colorado, when they tried to open up in Australia the name was already gone so we have hungry jacks.

Stupid is as stupid does.  Zero patience for it these days.  (Must be getting crotchety in my years.)  Courses post CPO for a reason.  As golfers, we should respect that.  Often here, it's because the course has become soggy due to rainfall.  And they don't want the turf torn up with careless cart usage.  Get off your lazy a** and walk over to your ball.  Carry an extra club along if you're unsure of which one to use.  Although rarely see that it makes one iota of difference.  If one can see the 100 & 150 markers, should be able to figure out what club to use by extrapolating from that.  

 

Something I've noticed while out amongst the hoi polloi playing.  The number that require being driven to their ball.  Rather than get out of the cart and walk the 30 yards.  Even though I probably cart more than walk, do like to get out and stretch my legs walking around.  Eschewing a ride in favor of walking up the fairway to the ball.
