Miamistomp, your Florida pic sparked my memory of the only 'art' I ever attempted and had forgotten about. Back in about 1970, way after the psychedelic age had hit, I spent a small amount of time working at a place that made cabinets. We had pieces that went on the front of kitchen drawers that were rejects for whatever reason, and so I would get them. They were real wood, and the grain in the wood had been surfaced so you could see it clearly as in the pic below. I had the bright (no pun intended) idea to paint the inside of each section of the grain with a different screaming vibrant neon acrylic colors. I also had a black light. I probably made about 6 of these 'paintings' , and I mounted them on the wall in the bedroom. After that many I was done because I learned that painting such detail and I were not meant to be... But when the bedroom lights went off, and the blacklight went on, it was a beauty to behold- for a young guy- who was in a band- who had just made it through the 60's - who thought blacklights and acrylic paints on wood, it was just so cool... Ok, it was stupid... it's nice to be retired 🙂

Holy mackerel, you guys have been busy!  This is great!  I can't recall in recent times when we've had such a plethora of posts in a single day and covering everything from welcomes/welcome backs to art to gardening to beards!

 

I remember doing a WITB post on here about 300 pages ago and thinking that wasn't that long ago.  Of course it was as I don't own those particular clubs any longer, but i guess that's the whole point of being a ho.  You sell so that you can buy again.  I know, it's disease or at least that's what DW tells me...

Started the process a couple of days ago on the redecorating project.  At this point I'm just reorganizing my clothes as I use that room as my wardrobe.  I know that sounds ridiculous, but it is the reality of living in a small house with small bedrooms.  DW kept her clothes in the master and I used the 3rd bedroom for mine.  In the process, I started going through my things with the notion of thinning the herd so-to-speak.  If I haven't worn it in two years it goes (not to mention anything that doesn't fit!)  I'll have a green garbage bag of stuff when I'm done and that will go to the local benevolent fund store.

 

I'll make sure to take a before picture so that there is something to compare with.  Next part of the project will be removing wallpaper.  That's always a treat -- NOT!  I'm not expecting the hardwood to be in for a month, so we can take our time with the stripping and painting.  Once the flooring is installed I'll have to get some new baseboard to finish the project off along with a new ceiling light.

Thanks. We have tried fancy grow lights, fans and heaters like you mentioned. I think the greenhouse is

just too small to work well for tomatoes and cucumbers. If we open it up it doesn't stay warm enough

and when we close it it gets too humid inside. The cucumbers especially are very prone to disease.

 

One thing the greenhouse does do is to keep existing tomatoes and cucumbers safe from the first early

season freezes so that they can fully grow and ripen. That usually takes us here into the first few weeks

of December. After that we might as well just take those plants down as they are going to produce so

little as to not be worth the effort. Even when we have started new plants from seed they just don't

produce much inside the greenhouse.

 

We also have what we call screenhouses that are shaped like small greenhouses but protect the

plants from bugs and frost but not from low temps. Our low temps here are usually not too bad at

their coldest (mid 20s F). In these we grow some you have mentioned like salad greens, broccoli

and brussel sprouts. We especially love having fresh salad greens and can grow them 3 of the 4

seasons (summer is too hot).

 

I wonder sometimes if home gardening is worth the trouble or cost effective. Probably neither

but we do it anyway, lol, convincing ourselves it is fun and more healthy to eat home grown.

Well he was seen spinning rock band platters at WKRP.  

 

If you wax or duct tape it all off, you risk losing that distinguished big star quality.  Think of the Bond and Shakespeare roles you won't get!   The Oscar, Emmy, and Tony awards.  And what would become of all that lavender juice?

So yesterday afternoon/last night we had 13" of snow (according to the radio). I've never seen so much fall in my part of the UK at once. 

 

Due to the heavy snow, the kids and I decided it better they stay with DW and I last night and we would take them back to their mum this morning, well proved to be a choice we regretted. 

 

The morning started not well when after unlocking the back door (main door used in and out of the house due to the car being parked in the rear of the property) we found the sliding door stiff due to ice forming in the runs. 

 

Clearing the car of snow was no easier as I found thick ice underneath the snow so took to scraping the windows of the car (a task anyone who's done it regularly will know is not fun when the temp is -0c) 

 

Got the all essential parts of the car cleared of snow and ice and the vehicle warm enough for occupying, drive out of our parking spot up to the automated gate (we have a gated car park for 4 houses) and the gate does not open. After a quick investigation went back in the house to get a kettle of hot water to melt the ice from the gate hinges. Two, yes two kettles later the gate finally decides to start moving and we begin the less than enjoyable drive to their house. It's usually a 10min drive each way but this took 25 mins each way due to the roads and cautious driving. 

 

When we returned home, sods law kick us firmly in the goolies as the gate was once again stuck. So another trip into the house to get the kettle and free the gate from winters icy jaws and we finally got home. 

 

All in all a 20min round trip took 80mins total from door to door. Needless to say I was late to work (working from home has some advantages) and now I've cleared urgent emails and enjoying warming my feet by the grille and enjoying a cup of joe.

Oh how well I remember clearing snow and ice from windscreens, do not miss it now or ever again. The best bit was driving on the black ice, many hairy journeys, touch brakes and the car does not slow down.

Having gone to school in North Tonawanda NY, living in the snow belt, I can sympathize with you. We had the heavy snow off Lake Erie several times, you either learn to love it or hate it... I wish you well, glad the snow didn't keep you from the Grille

My condolences and empathy on your climatic conditions.  Performing the metric conversion, 13" = 33.02 cm of snow.  Wholly smokes, that's a lot of snow.  Can't remember the last time we've gotten that much.  I'd rather clear the imperial amount, compared to the metric.  

 

Been a very easy winter so far in these environs.  So far, haven't had to clear the drive once.  (Mentioned with trepidation as not to jinx it.)  Temps seasonably cool, but yet to have the inevitable cold snap of bitter 0* temperatures.  Anyhow, advancing one day at a time towards spring.  Almost February, the "short" month.  Comfortably played golf in late February last year.  

 

As a life long resident of the winter zone, snow and cold is something that Ive become accustomed to.  Tolerate.  A benign acceptance of it is what it is.  With thoughts of warm weather once again returning.  Can't imagine what it would be like to live where it's nice all the time.  What is there to look forward to?  How does one talk about the weather when there is a routine sameness?  Where one could play 365 golf if so inclined.  I need the break in the action.  Where it's so bloody hot in the summer you don't want to set foot outdoors, let alone be out on a golf course.  That's the trade off for not living in cold weather climes.  

 

So we continue to persevere.

Our first winter in our new home (2019) we had 30 cm of snow on Remembrance Day (Nov. 11)!  This in a locale where my immediate neighbour suggested to me that I didn't even need to buy a snow shovel.  I had one of course from our previous location, but after that storm I promptly bought a snowblower!  I've used that once just to say that I have.

 

Had a couple of snows this winter season, but more of the normal 4" variety that is gone within a couple of days.  The shovel is all that's required for those and now that DW is retired I can afford to wait until it melts... 😏  Nevertheless, I sympathize with your situation @Jedaigeki as that was a typical winter out on the farm.  In fact, we used to measure it in days in a row rather than one offs.  I believe that my record over the course of 60 years was a stretch where I cleared snow at least once a day for 30 consecutive days in January.  I don't recall the year, but I do remember being as tired after that winter as I would have been any normal planting, haying season or harvest season!  As you noted, it's not just the snow but the never ending fussing with frozen you name its!

 

@SixtySomePing's mention of North Tonawanda NY is quite a place.  It's about 45 minutes over the border from where I currently live.  The snow accumulations there are legendary if you're not familiar with it.  I used to get season's passes at Holiday Valley in Ellicottville NY to ski.  I loved it down there as conditions were always good, even in years with limited snow due to it's unique location and it was never that busy through the week.  Snow removal in that part of the world is serious business though!

Yes, snow removal was serious, I only missed 1 day of school the entire time I lived there. The city even had sidewalk snow removal machines, very cute, about the size of golf carts, see photo, this isn't NT, but the very same thing...

We actually have sidewalk clearing machines here in town.  Considering where we live and the typical amount of snow that we seems to get, this town has a luxury level of snow removal.  I think that it's all about coverage for those one off type storms that come once a season.  When you live right on the lake and the wind blows from the east over open water it can be epic!  There were pictures posted on a local community group from 1977 when cars were buried on the QEW and overpasses were literally filled right in!

Wow, yes, this kind of reminds me of the great blizzard we had here in the midwest on January 27, 1978. It was devastating to lots of people around here, they just weren't used to that kind of weather ever. Our electric was out, no gas furnace for a few days, we finally congregated into one room which I ended up 'heating' if you can call it that with two metal Folgers coffee cans, one on top of the other with a large candle in the bottom one, and the other one upside down on it vented, it made heat... sort of

C'mon man!  All this snow talk has jinxed me. I have been playing every week and had my best winter round on Fri. Woke up this morning to just enough snow to shut it down. I can't complain. We get very little just 30 miles down from where we lived for 42 years. It is amazing what a difference elevation makes in the weather. No more 8 - 10 foot drifts that would snow us in.

Today 26th January is Australia day, very contentious as some call it invasion day but it is still a holiday and lamb is the most consumed meat today.

 

Lunch today.

 

Marinated Lamb cutlets, sugar snap peas, snow peas an peas from the pod, fresh mint leaves, Marinated feta cheese, baked potato, garlic bread and a honey, lemon, dijon mustard, chilli and olive oil dressing, with a creme fresh cream to put on the potato.

 

Went well as second picture testifies.

When we visited the DW's family in Sol Cal I made the ironic joke/point every morning of making a scene checking the weather app and looking out the window. When asked "why as it's always sunny" I responded better safe than sunny. 

 

I don't think they really got it, but the DW and I found it amusing. It's hard to explain to someone who doesn't even own a coat what it's like to live somewhere where one day it can be 10c and the next -3c
