I have an old 1 iron that I took and etched into the sole to make the number look like 7.  When I use it on our 208 yard par 3 hole others in the group will ask, "What did you hit there?" I just show them the bottom of the club and their jaws drop in awe.

Earlier in the week we were talking about turf colors in the winter. I took a drive around the course early this morning and snagged some photos. I found shades of tan and green under a grey December sky. The fairways are Zoysia, the greens are Bent, and the rough is tall Fescue with spots of Bermuda and Poa.

More loft = more forgiveness. Do you hit a 4-iron as well as an 8-iron?

 

Many people need more loft. They need more spin and height.

 

I don't care about saving some tradition on lofts.

 

Clubs are designed for the ball to have the same height/apex. They just reach that apex at different distances.

 

When you learn a ball position at address based on less-lofted clubs, it isn't going to work anymore. If you're trying to follow Hogan's ball position graphic of where a 5-iron should be, it's no longer valid, since you have a 3-iron.

 

The PXG also have increased the length about a full inch, so the 7-iron is a true old 5-iron. But the lie angle is a little flat.

 

Most people hit the 8-iron the same distance as their old 6-iron, since that's what it is.

 

You may hit them farther because of different weight and/or shafts. Lighter weight = faster swing = more spin = more height = more distance = steeper angle from apex = faster stop.

 

Again, I don't care about lofts being jacked, but there are some compensations to be made to accommodate the change and maximize the  of return on your purchase! If you make believe you have a 3-iron instead of a 5-iron, you'll probably setup and swing better than thinking you have a 5-iron.

 

And buy a bunch of wedges . . .

No DMM, that house is so average. It only has 7 bedrooms, 9 baths, and one pool. Chateau Laurence has a dozen bedrooms and baths and two pools.

If you're a Ping ISI guy, you have multiple wedge options.  W (47*), W2 (49.5*), S (52*), S2 (54.5*), S3 (57*), L (61*).  No U wedge though.

For the most part, treat wedges (up to a point) as an extension of the irons utilized.  The Honma's, that have suddenly become fashionable, are on the right tract.  Stamp a number instead of a letter.  Problem solved.  No more multiple wedge guy.  Although that is not a new approach.  Hogan labeled them as Sand Irons.  Ernie Vanderson (Snake Eyes) stamped his wedges 10, 11, 12 (52*, 56*, 60*).   Maybe others that I'm not familiar with.  

 

My 49.5* G wedge (aka UW, AW, 11W) is my de facto PW.  A full swing club that's used from varying distances inside 100 yards.  A set matching GW is an essential club in my world.  The 54* iron is the next in the progression.  Rarely used from sand, a turf shot club from varying lie conditions.  Gaps out to ~70 yards.  Depending on how I swing it.  The 58* has become the sand iron, and for most feel shots around the green that require a "lob" shot.  Thank goodness it's an agreeable club, a 60* is worthless in my hands.  

 

Find it perplexing why club manufacturers choose to bunch up the lofts in the long irons (2* between the 4 and 5, see above).  How is that even meaningful?  Yet stretch out the loft spread to 6* in the short irons (PW - GW).  Seems counter intuitive.   To CYA by not requiring an AW and GW to cover the gaps between P iron and S iron?  IDK.  The logic escapes me.  Homey don't play that game.  Neat and tidy ~4* seems to work out just about right for the gapping thing.  The number of irons in the bag a function of what is needed to fill the distances between ~150 yards and 100.  Before entering multiple wedge realm.  As of this season past, that's a 28.5* 6 iron (becoming suspect) to a 45* P iron.  If I could uncover some appropriate iron like hybrids, would reduce that down to ~125.  What's going to give the best opportunity to realize a successful outcome?

 

Don't want to manipulate the head. Don't want to half swing shots.  Get all touchy feely.  Rarely proves successful.  See the shot, grab an iron, hit the shot, trust my gap distances.  All comes down to swing execution anyhow.  And get a putter in my hands (even if it's 10 yards off the green) as quickly as possible.  Become pretty good with this sorta chop shot putting stroke that pops the ball up and away from roughage around the green.  Don't know exactly how I do it, but I can.  

 

While out in the wild, the less time spent mulling over this shizzle, the better.
