Thriver?

What is a good thriver head and shaft combo?

Friend of mine started to golf recently and hits the ball very low. He is about 5’4”, 140lbs. Avg takaway and avg transition. I would guess 90 to slightly below swing speed.

Any thoughts? Thank you

I also had no clue what a "thriver" was. It seems as if it's a 460cc driver with around a 43" - 44" shaft and a loft ranging from 13* to 15*.

As far as the OP question...sure, tell your buddy to give it a try. It can't hurt anything.

Driver: Mizuno ST-X

FW: TaylorMade Sim2 Ti (5 wood)

Hybrid: PXG Proto

Irons: Srixon ZX-5

Wedges: Taylormade MG2 (54* & 58*)

Putter: Cameron Squareback 2

Hierko Acer Thriver is a high loft (14*) 460cc head. Match it up with a inexpensive graphite shaft like the Grafalloy Pro Custom which gives you some trim options.

Or just shop around for a good used 12* - 14* Driver with an A flex shaft. Pretty much the same thing. Might be cheaper in the long run.

Edit Note: Believe Hierko Golf coined the the name "Thriver".

Ping g stretch....

13 degrees, adjustable if you are into that sort of thing

43" or whatever length if you order one

A bigger head than your average "3" wood, but nice looking at address. I can hit it off the deck, but it really shines off the tee.

I found one of these in the pre-owned rack at a local shop. I am shocked at how well it performs for me with the stock alta shaft.

The OP's friend is a beginning golfer with a slow(er) swing speed. The last thing he needs to learn with is a small headed "mini" driver or low lofted fairway metal. Seems as though the answer would be to acquire a full size driver in a higher loft combined with a more flexible shaft to help elevate the ball. Adjust the length to suit his height and capabilities. A driver such as this would seem to be ideally suited for a developing beginner:

Thanks. I almost bided on it till I saw it was left handed. picture is so deceiving. LOL

I was hoping for heavier head to shorten the shaft. Guess I can always lead-tape and throw in some shaft tip weights as well.

Sorry about that. Knew it was LH. Was just trying to use the listing as an example of what's available, of decent quality, for a given price point. Prudent shopping will uncover a perfectly fine driver for your friend. As a beginner, shortening it up some to match his height, he may not even be sensitive to the SW change. But lead tape an experimentation can always be used to augment the shorter shaft changes.

Once he starts improving, becomes more proficient with his game, then he can learn the fine points of club "ho'in" like the rest of us on WRX. .

I'm about the same size, same swingspeed and do just fine with a 10.5 G30, Tour 65R shaft.

I might suggest you do him a favor and help him get properly set up at address for driver before telling him to get a new club, unless he's using something less than 9.5*. That means ball position, tee height and shoulder lean for starters.

PXG will build a "Thriver" for you.

These are awesome!

Anywhere from 43 - 44"

Because the the weight screws in the Proto head it gives them the ability to both add heavier weights or hot melt in the head. Hot melt is actually awesome because it makes the driver sound even better.

The 10.5* Proto head can be lofted up to 11.5* or 12*. The Key with these shorter drivers/thrivers is  you need a little more loft/launch.

If you are looking for a fairway finding beast that basically goes as long as a 45" driver, think about it. The driver head has to be 10-20 grams heavier depending on the length and shaft.

Welcome to 2021 Mr. Zero... there is this little thing called Google search, you type in "Thriver Driver Golfwrx" ... poof, it comes up! You may want to switch from Coke Zero to Classic Coke, those artificial sweetners might be hurting your brain! lol

Personally I prefer a Dredge. A driver head with a wedge shaft. Ideal when you absolutely have to find the fairway.

A Pwiver is also handy. A PW head on a driver shaft. Brilliant for long approach/recovery shots over trees.
