What is another word for "made-for"?

I can't for the life of me remember the word when they make shafts for club manufacturers.

Driver: Ping G400 Max 10.5 Stock Alta (need shaft fitting)
Fairway Wood: Ryoma F5
Hybrid: TaylorMade M6 4H & 6H
Irons: OnOff Kuro 2015 6 - PW
Wedge: Cleveland RTX4 50, 54 and 58
Putter: S.C. GoLo 3
Ball: TaylorMade TP5X
Club hoe, builder, fitter and tester as hobbyist since 1993

Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) is a company that makes a part or subsystem that is used in another company's end product.

 

Ha! was about to come paste the same thing

There is a word they use. It starts with P.

They use the same label and name but it's not the actual shaft.

Driver: Ping G400 Max 10.5 Stock Alta (need shaft fitting)

Watered down, mass produced, higher launch, higher spin, lower quality control, in name only.

 

That about describes "made for" shafts.

Yes, OEM's deliberately glue substandard shafts in their offerings so that people won't buy the product........

They will buy the product not knowing or spend even more$ upgrading to a decent shaft.

 

The only stock offerings that are good quality maybe Ping who are of course private and dont have stockholders to worry about.

For the most part, John Q Public hasn't a clue of what they're actually getting, and don't bother trying to explain it to them. "Look! It's got a $400 shaft in it"! Yeah, right.

That was true 10-12 years ago. Another word is co-designed.

It's not just OEM shaft builders that do it - it's simply a "maximum/optimal use" of the machinery that makes the shafts. It's the "recipe" which makes the OEM's shafts special. But the OEM probably has a lot of excess capacity (too much time when the machines aren't being used) so it sells the machinery, manufacturing capability, subject matter expertise - but not the recipe.

 

It's like a restaurant that uses its kitchen to make food for its customers from 6am to 8pm. But from 8pm to 6am - they rent the kitchen to 3rd parties who cook their own recipes in the same kitchen. Or like a school with an astroturf field and world-class facilities - that use them to develop their own teams from 6am to 6pm and game days - but otherwise they are renting the facility (and staff) to outside sports leagues.

 

They aren't making anything per se - and not dumbing down the product as some here are alleging...but the 3rd party shafts are just built to a different recipe. The OEM is giving the 3rd party what it asked for.

'Co-engineered' was the term Taylormade used to describe shafts 'co-designed' with Fujikura.
