British Open 2016 ... who you got?

Going with Louie. He's been around the leaderboards a little more than he's given credit recently. Just not high enough for the pundits to take notice. He's probably feel extra motivation to keep up with his peer group of elite players. He's long but not a bomber, but he won't be disadvantaged vs your Rory, Bubba's, DJ, Jason's of the world where length isn't as important as some other tournaments. (Zack Johnson did win here last year). And a lot of the bombers inaccuracy or lack of short game will hurt them too.

Dark horse would be Westwood, who at 43, time is running out on.

After his US Open clutch performance any discussion needs to include DJ as a serious contender.

Garcia or Westwood.

Garcia is a good call too. Knocking on the door for a while. Better player than Westwood imo and younger. Also a low ball hitter which I think works well on that course (Todd Hamilton won in 2004)

Going for Grace, after another good showing at the US Open he is getting more comfortable on the big stages and has already won on links courses. He likes the firm and fast conditions of an Open.

That would be awesome. Or Westwood. If either of the win I will likely get even more emotional than when Andy Murrey won Wimbledon :).

I understand that Lee Westwood is a really good guy and people want him to win. But has he ever proven to be a big tournament winner? I would understand if he had won a few world golf championships, the players, memorial etc. But the reality is that he boosts his world ranking but winning Asian Tour events.

I would understand if he had won a few world golf championships, the players, memorial etc. But the reality is that he boosts his world ranking but winning Asian Tour events.

The reality was that he boosted his world ranking by consistently being near the top of major championship leaderboards.

2008 - 3rd in the US Open

2009 - T3rd in The Open and PGA

2010 - 2nd in the Masters and The Open

2011 - 3rd in the US Open

2012 - T3rd in the Masters

2013 - T3rd in the Open

2016 - T2nd in the Masters

Looking at that period between 2008 and 2013 the points he earned with those finishes alone would have vaulted him up the world rankings. Those performances would have boosted up the rankings a hell of a lot more than winning the Maybank Malaysian Open.

He also led the Players in 2010 for a few days before hitting it in the water on 17 on the final day and ending up 4th. 2nd in the WGC HSBC Champions as well.

So in 2010 he could have realistically won the Masters, Open, a WGC and the Players and won none of them. In these big money events, you can get $1m for second place = money for winning a regular event = similar world ranking points.

Westwood has had a strange career in that he was a serial winner in his youth - 14 European Tour wins by the age of 27, 1 PGA Tour win. To someone who couldn't close it out - half that, 7 European Tour wins from age 34 to 43 and 1 PGA Tour win. In that later time he's been a better player, contended much more often, he's had 9 major top 5s and been world number 1.

Are you sure about that? Yes, his 2016 second place finish at The Masters was a great finish and got him 50 points.

2013 Open Championship - 3rd place - 31 points

2012 Masters- 3rd place - 28 points

2014 Thailand Golf Championship - Win - 34 points

2014 Maybank Malaysian Open - Win - 32 points

There are a few events that have strong home rating points, but very weak world ranking ratings. But they still give off a lot of points.

He finished 2nd again in the Thailand Championship and got 17 points.

His second place finishes in the 2010 Masters and Open got him 60 points respectively. Only one of his Asian wins even features in his Top 20 performances when I comes to points gained and I think that was a co-sanctioned event with some Euro Tours players. So I would stick with my position that his majors are what got him to the the top end of the world rankings.

That said, I think what you were trying to say is that he didn't win as much as he should have done and I would not disagree with you. At the bigger tournaments he seemed to develop a pretty good knack of not winning when he really should have done.

I think my British Open contenders would be:

-Jason Day

-Lee Westwood

-Sergio Garcia

-Branden Grace

-Louis Oosthuizen

If you want to go historical and thinking that an American has to win then I would go with Brooks Koepka. Has European Tour experience, finished tenth at last year's Open, and has a few other top finishes in majors.
