Curious grip problem

Recommended Posts

trying to install a putter grip....have tried 4 times now using two different types of tape(goldsmith) and four different solvents but each time the adhesive does not 'set'........maybe the grip has too high a 'plastic' content?

Anybody suffered the same thing and if so did you resolve it?

PS I don't have access to a compressor.......

What grip onto what type of shaft? And what solvents?

I used to have problems with older putters because the shafts were thin and the grip cores are too large.

A mistake that is often made by rookies is that they pour solvent on the tape and then over-soak the tape. By the time they slide the grip on, it is just slimy and broken down the adhesive on the tape. The grip will never be solid. The best way is to pour/squirt enough solvent into the grip and then quickly pour it over the tape and immediately slide the grip on. Very little actual solvent stays on the tape as it is slid on.

As you have already done this a few times with the same grip, the inside of the grip is likely no longer clean and full of gunk. Clean the inside of the grip so that it is clean as a whistle and using new tape, install. Make sure the tape you use isn't cheap crap and the solvent is solvent and not some of the "eco-friendly" stuff. It doesn't work well.

Thanks guys......

I don't believe the grip core is too big for the shaft but I will give it a go with another wrap.

The tape is goldsmith and the solvent first used was golfsmith, since then I have tried ....gas/petrol, a degreaser spray, even hairspray. I have tried with 2 examples of this particular grip.

So I'm going to buy some new tape, new solvent and try an additional tape wrap.........

Which Grip?

There were a few old Golf Pride grips that I had issues with years ago. No issues with any grips lately.

I use mineral spirits and tape from Golfsmith, grips don't move when you let them sit overnight.

Each attempt was left for 48hrs before trying........I could literally pull the grips off.

I have regripped many clubs in the past without a problem.....

THe grips used are Japanese Elite, similar to Iomic, not available in the US as far as I know.

Those grips are likely some type of thermoplastic by the looks of their website. You are probably on the right track with too much plastic in the grips....or some other material.

Something to think about is giving the grips a thorough cleaning with something like acetone. A release agent has to be used on the dies so the grips can come out of the molds. There may be some residue left over or maybe they were never cleaned after molding. Essentially nothing will stick if there is any release agents on the grips.

Also maybe try V&MP Naptha for tape solvent.

Some solvents don't work well with thermoplastic materials as it is basically non-porous and the solvents can not escape to evaporate.

You can use a bike pump with a nozzle that is used to fill rafts or pool floats. Works very well!

Some good advice about the release agent........many thanks

Visit your local Home Depot, Lowes or Tractor Supply and get one. You will never forgive yourself if you don't.
