I guess we have been too busy playing golf to post here.  Season is winding down. I formerly played my December-March golf at Fox Hills.  Found a new "Winter Home" and very happy.

I'm still playing.  Got in 9 today at Sylvan.

What is your new winter home?  I'm always looking for a 12 month course, as the selection is limited.

Got in 10 rounds in January, but that run is now over.  Tuesday will be my last round for at least a month (the forecast is not looking good).

anybody got a golf instructor they recommend for lessons? been out injured for a year and was hoping to get couple of lessons before the season really starts to make sure i haven't picked up any bad habits

Not sure exactly where you’re at but if you’re anywhere near Plymouth I recommend Jordan Young or Brian Cairns at Fox Hills they are two of the best in the Metro area.

great course! looking forward to getting out there hopefully soon, missed all of last year with an injury, one of my favorite courses locally

It is a great course.  I rank it number 3 best public course, but that is largely because of the design.

Last year it was the greenest I've ever seen in April in 20 years.  With the mild winter, I expect it will be in good shape early in the season.

Crystal Lake is open and is in fairly nice condition.  The greens are rolling very true, but are a little slow.  It's so much fun to go there and pretend to play like a PGA tour player (but I've still never reached number 17 in two).

If anyone here on the East side, and is a low single-digit handicap looking to play some competitive matches, the Publinx team at Twin Lakes is looking for a couple of players to round out their roster. Here's info from the thing sent out by the guy who runs the team play.

Quote

The season starts Sunday April 30th and consists of 7 matches between April 30th and August 20th with playoffs to follow. Please contact Johnny Chaivre at [email protected] if you might be interested.

Team play is competitive, but pretty relaxed, and it's a good way to get involved in some competitive golf against some good players in the area.

Whats your top 5-10 courses in the Metro area? say within hour of here

Someone came from a different state and you had to take them somewhere where would you go?

1. Shepperd’s Hollow

2. Northville Hills

3. Lyon Oaks

4. Pheasant Run

5. Eagle Crest

6. Coyote Preserve

7. Huntmore

8. Fox Hills (Golden Fox)

9. Greystone

10. Fieldstone

I realize some of these are close to an hour from downtown Detroit. These are a list of only courses I’ve played (I know there’s others that I cannot attest to/for)

I didnt play last year due to injury, and a friend at work has just taken up golf so made me start thinking which courses to take him to. So far been to Shepherds Hollow, Pheasant run and devils ridge. I feel within hour roughly of detroit we have so many good quality courses, that I find it hard on days off to decide which course I want to go to. This week think were going to Orchards, one course I have never played.

I like your list and agree with most of them, other ones I would reccommed, moose ridge and Lake Majestic two other nice courses

The Orchards is really nice I’ve heard and yes I’ve played moose ridge and lake majestic as well. Probably just outside my top 10 personally. Moose has slowly started to fall on my rankings because course conditions are getting a little worse over the years.

Lots of quality courses in Metro, but two stand out for me as being in a different class.  The first is a truly public course, and that is The Orchards.  ONCE in over 150 rounds was it not maintained to standards close to perfection.  They've got a top tier, grade A+ greenskeeper.  And the design is brilliant.  There are many courses that are prettier, but none that have such a perfect balance of risk to reward.  The Orchards is really two golf courses.  One is fairly easy to manage for par or birdie and the other offers those high skill players (not me) a chance to go low...or pay a big penalty.

But the must play course in Metro is the U of M MacKenzie.  There are just a handful of MacKenzie courses in the USA and most you'll never get a chance to play.  The U of M is gem and after you play it you'll never look at Augusta the same way again.

Im hopefully playing Orchards this week for the first time, and looking forward to it. Always seen it spoken so highly of and in ratings its always high up.

U of M I love, its my 1 a 1b with shepherds hollow for around here.

The Orchards has won best course in the city more than any other, and it's not hype.  It was prettier before they built out the homes on the back 9, but the course itself is largely unchanged.

There was a fantastic large tree right in the fairway on 17, but a storm took it out.  The Orchards respected the course designer and immediately planted a new tree.  It's the difference between great management and the hack pretenders.  The Orchards have a, "build it and they will come" philosophy.

Let us know what you think of it.

Love the orchards.  Played it many times.  Wish the par 3's were a bit more imaginative.  Sorta bland/boring.

The par 3's are a little plain.  I do like numbers 12 and 14.  The two on the front are nothing special.

Had a great day out, greens were amazing and felt pretty much perfect especially for this time of the year. Shot 89, was even after 5, then struggled on the back 9 putting. Enjoyed the day but feel the course doesnt have the wow factor that some other courses have. Will try and play there again hopefully before I travel to England this summer.

Think playing U of M next week, which I love
