What are the best cheap grips?

Recommended Posts

Picked up a set of old Ping Eye 2s which have the original diamond grips, however the grips are cracking and need of replacement. Since they aren't going to be my gamer set and I will only use them every now and then for fun, what is your best recommendation for a low cost grip option for them?

One thing worth noting is that I don't play with a glove and am looking for something that won't feel like it will slip out of my hands.

At the moment, I'm looking at the Tour Star, Smoothie and Sidewinder from Star Grips and the Sand Wrap V and Classic V from Royal Grips as possible replacements, but am open to what you guys think.

To recommend a grip with confidence we need to know the playing conditions and your preferences.

Warm vs cold (how warm, how cold?)

dry vs humid vs rain

a grip that is soft with some "give" vs firm and tacky

Others can add other variables.

A cheap grip is something that will last forever, avoiding recurring costs. My vote is for Lamkin Crossline.

My dad uses an old set of Titleist 981SL irons back from 1998 with those grips and they are STILL tacky. Thumb is a bit worn on some clubs but still usable. Golf Pride Tour Velvet only lasted for 1 season for me before getting slick. We both live in a desert climate for reference.

+1 for crossline

I've tried Sharpro grips in the past, and didn't have very good luck with their durability. They tend to crack and split much faster than name brand grips. Your best bet is to find some good Golf Pride or Lamkin grips on sale.

When I think cheap, I think Tacki Mac Tour Wraps. Set of 13 at Academy's website for $25.

I like these. I have them in midsize on a set of irons, surprisingly good for the price. Slightly less tacky and softer than GP Tour Wraps.
