How would anyone "ban" Rory from some future Olympics when he doesn't want to go there in the first place? WTH, that would be like "banning" me from visiting Somalia...it is not a place I want to go in the first place.

We should all be banned from Somalia.

Alright there, that's enough Mister. You just made the List...BANNED!

We're not in Russia are we, Danny?

Much fail all around on Olympic golf. Course that may not be mature, boring format, all the issues with Rio, IOC corruption, governing bodies that are out of touch with the younger players ... you get the picture.

I do believe Rory has every right to decline to play in the Olympics, and I also think he has a responsibility to comport himself a little better given his standing in the game. He may not have started golfing to "grow the game," but the game has given him much and he does have a responsibility to pay it forward.

Unless he really doesn't care and is just in it for the money and women.

Good post. Id just add

The fail is the top 4 men.

Still guys going to pick up their slack.

Not to mention all of the women golfers.

I'm still not sure why anyone would expect these guys to what to go play in Rio.

Rory said what he feels, and I don't disagree with it.

Golf back in the Olympics was always an odd idea to me. And the media loves shoving a microphone in these guys faces and asking them how much it means to them, when they know full well it's not a top priority for golfers.

Rory is an Olympic

Pariah.

Should be banned from Tokyo.

How can he show his face considering what he has said about what "matter"s?

I'm gonna guess by what Rory has said, he wouldn't really care about being banned.

I agree, it is an odd idea and it put all players into a can't win either way kind of bind. I'm not one to feel much sympathy for the First World "struggles" of professional golfers male or female, but I like what Rory said. It was refreshing to hear plain speak and candid talk, and not just because it was candid but because his reasoning was there. I don't buy Chamblee's comments at all, seems like grandstanding.

Was this plain speak?

"I get that a lot of players aren’t playing because of family matters and other things,” McIlroy said, “but while I don’t have those issues of a family or anything else, that’s a good opportunity to go down and do something that you’ve never done before. If nothing else, it will be a great experience.”"

Or are his recent comments plain speak?

I mean, Curling in the winter Olympics is basically a walking punchline.

Hey hey. My sons and I love watching curling. Living most of my life in a desert we never participated in any winter sports and so Winter Olympics are not something that ever held my interest until I discovered curling. The absurdity of the sport is very compelling. I mean, what other sport uses a broom?

Maybe Rory is fed up with the corruption at all levels of IOC bureaucracy, how their 'stimulus' of a third world country was to build new stadiums, parking lots and luxury apartments for a two week glad handing session by people who have no intention of ever coming back while the citizens of Brazil STILL have to deal with fetid water, below average working/living conditions and constant violence. Maybe refusing to hit a ball around a terraformed trash pile is his way of saying 'I will not partake in this charade'. He just happened to eat two flyknit trainers before he stepped up to the microphone.

I'd rather win the Sanderson Farm's or John Deere Classic than an Olympic Gold medal.

The Olympics are not the pinnacle for golf - it is for track and field, diving .. you know .. the events Rory say's he'll be watching.

I can appreciate your preference, but in our (amateur) position, that's almost a logical choice. Being named #1 and winning $$$$. But for some tour pros that have won multiple times and have plenty of money, adding a Gold Medal to the Trophy case doesn't seem unreasonable.

Not unreasonable but in that sense it is pretty much the same as what Jordan Spieth did this past winter, flying around the world to play in events that are no more than distractions from his pursuit of the accomplishments that signify greatness.

I'd guess it's easy for a top player who has a couple majors under his belt to fall into the trap of thinking he can pursue majors while also putting feathers in his cap with various other events. Many of them over the years have found that to be a mistake.

I suspect Spieth's sponsors played an influential roll in his travel schedule and events.

The problem with Rory implying that golf doesn't matter is that it's kind of disrespectful to all the people who worked hard to get golf into the Olympics. It's also kinda disrespectful to PGA professionals who have made the decision to play.

He's totally correct though. Golf really doesn't matter as an Olympic sport and doesn't really fit in with the Olympic games.

If Golf is an Olympics sports, we might as well throw in Pool game and Bowling in there as well. Oh.. wait a second.. F**king Frisbee is in olympics for 2016 now...!

Bring all your hobbies to Olympics!!! GOLF is TOTALLY an Olympics sports now.. Hopefully, I don't have see one day S*X becomes an Olympics sport..... sigh.. IOC has zero respect for true sport men and women out there... Why do we keep IOC for really?

Personally, with everyone dropping out of the Olympics, I think it's a conspiracy. All the big Aussie names dropped out... Since crime and kidnapping are a big fear, I think everyone just WANTS Robert Allenby to go. It'll be fun.

Has any reporter asked Rory a follow up about his comments? I know he was interviewed about his round. My guess is he told them ahead of time, no questions about THAT or the reporter knew he would "freeze them out" in the future from being cooperative and available for interviews.

At some point I hope someone has the balls to ask him...or give him the opportunity, to clarify or double down to end all this.

As some posters have pointed out Rory has made many comments in the past supporting golf in the Olympics...now this???? So was he being honest then or being honest now?

Yes, today.

He says he's going to be true to himself. Isn't backing down on his Olympic remarks.
