Rory McIlroy: "I'll watch the Olympics, but probably not golf. I'll watch track and field, swimming,

Recommended Posts

Rory spoke the hard truth, well done

On the other hand Spieth faux sincerity makes me puke in my mouth.

Well sure, that's the sensation Team Spieth wants, cause you can easily wash away that puke taste with a nice 2 liter bottle of Coke! ;)

Damn right, let's not even get started on the irony of coke and macdonalds Olympic sponsorship deals

It's kinda hilarious watching the GC guys rip this to shreds, as if golf is going to cease to exist as a sport because of the Olympic pullouts.

I realize GC is mad because nobody will watch, but Rich Lerner is almost suicidal at his desk. "This is a terrible day for golf." Really, Rich? For crying out loud, they're choosing not to compete in a tournament, not retiring from the game.

Rory slapped a lot of truth to the media today, and they don't like it.

It's all about the money, sadly. "I got into the game to win tournaments" Well, I guess the Olympics isn't a tournament?

It is a tournament, it just doesn't pay out money. Very sad day.

No longer a fan of Rory. I have forgiven him in the past for throwing clubs in the water and for faking a tooth ache so he could walk off the course when he was playing bad.

Rich, spoiled prima-donna flying around on his private jet in his bubble.

Disrespectful to the game. Disrespectful to his country. Disrespectful to his fellow competitors. Disrespectful to the Olympics

Yes, it is about the money. Golf is their job.

Do you work for free?

What Rory has in terms of wealth and accomplishment is stuff HE has earned.

If there ever was a reason to make the Olympics a 100% amateur sporting event once again, Rory is the poster boy. Bryson and some of the up and coming stars may have kept their amateur status a little longer and played for Gold. Same with basketball, the rich pros playing for gold medals tarnishes the games imo.

Heard today, granted 2nd hand but from a high up PGA official after a few drinks, the PGA wanted this to happen so governments would open their purse and spend money on developing courses, golf programs (PGA lessons), sell sticks and so on to compete in future Olympics. Along the lines of what was mentioned earlier in this thread of countries holding qualifying tournaments, so each country can send "golf athletes".

I'm laughing that some people take Olympic golf seriously.

I am surprised that people take the Olympics seriously. It is primarily a made for TV program for non-sports fans. NBC will show more human interest garbage than actual competition. Yet people still seem to fall hook line and sinker for the faux, flag-waving, rah rah rah crap like the Cold War is still going on or something.

Do I feel bad that the lesser sports and their athletes can't stand on their own and still need to pimp themselves to the IOC for attention, yeah I do.

But golf doesn't need it. Golf is denigrated by being associated with the Olympics. Good riddance after 2020 I hope.

Eh, he's got a point. People watching the Olympics who aren't fans of golf likely won't tune in whether the top players are there or not. Golf has never moved the needle unless Tiger is involved simply put.

What a load of BS, just lost a lot of respect for Rors.

If the players before him didn't care to grow the game he would be selling insurance somewhere (no disrespect to insurance salespeople). The game is bigger than you and your legacy.

Couldn't agree more. If it weren't for the players and I mean the actual competitors that flocked to the British Open before it was the " Open " and Augusta's tournament before it was the Master's no one would care today.

Rory had a chance to leave an imprint on the silly history of the Olympic's. He might actually have contributed to a golfing event that might have been considered a major 50yrs from now. But he lacked both courage and conviction.

That's how a lot of people feel about the sport we love.

Rory: I'm pulling out of the Olympics because of concerns for Zika

Golf WRX: LIAR!!! You just don't want to show up and play in the tourney. Don't lie, tell us how you really feel!!!!!

Rory: Olympic golf is stupid, and it's ridiculous to think that Olympic golf on a course they just created in a place PGA professionals will never go again will "grow the sport". Golf has major championships, and that's what I'm into

Golf WRX: What a jerk! What a tool! He hates golf and is only in it for the money. (p.s.-Nike sucks!)

That about cover it? Can we move on to discussing the Open? We've talked more about an event that none of us are going to even watch than the rest of the years best tournaments.

Thanks for reading my mind. The Open is this week, Olympics what? Lets move along here fellas.

Why does Rory owe it to people to play in the Olympics? Stop watching golf and he won't get paid....

But you won't stop watching golf.

And that's how the system works. You are unhappy because he gets paid a lot and you feel he owes you. Do you feel the CEO of your local largest employer owes you? The guy who owns your local hotel chain and is a multi-millionaire, does he owe you?

Seems to only apply to sports. Yet everyone with money owes it to supply and demand. But these athletes, they "owe" us.

Interesting that people think Rory spoke the truth and Spieth gave coach speak. I think Spieth spoke the truth, and Rory didn't mean anything he said. Rory was speaking from a place of anger, not reflection. If he believed what he was saying and was happy with his decision he wouldn't have spoke with so much venom.
