Rory the great ambassador for golf smashing his club

The problem with club throwing is that it has the potential to injure someone. I've seen clubs thrown at a golf card that rebound towards someone. The shaft snaps and can go anywhere. There are better ways to express anger. I try to be alert and careful if someone in my group starts throwing clubs. Usually a word or two pointing out the danger is enough to get the club-throwers attention. If not, they are not welcome in our group again.

But given the opportunity, I will play a round of golf with Rory. If he starts throwing clubs, I'll have a word with him. :)

Golf cards are quite thin and don't offer much protection .

Well, he pretty much stated that he has no interest in growing the game.

Tiger was a world class cusser, and he brought more people to the game then ever before in this generation.

The other before him was a model citizen, Arnie. Times change, but awe inspiring talent and an impressive record are what draw people to the game.

I'm not sure a lot of husbands on his barnstorming tours agree with the term model citizen. He was known to run his pen dry in various housewives.

man, I would be pissed if one of them was my wife. Arnie the ho lol

Arnold chain smoked in front of little kids. He and an entire generation of celebrities made smoking cool to the public for the tobacco companies that were trying to sell it to teenagers and get them hooked for life. And back then the cigarettes were even worse for your lungs than the stuff being sold now. I will take the temper tantrums of Tiger or Rory over the celebrities who push tobacco as part of their public image.

First of all he didn't smash his club, he threw it and it broke. Second, this whole "kids see it and they do it" thing...honestly? Yeah kids imitate stuff, and they also just do things without seeing them done. If a kid sees that kind of behaviour you tell them they shouldn't do that obviously, but every person I know who does that kind of thing (i.e. breaks clubs) is going to do it regardless of whether they see it, and regardless of whether they are told not to do it. Breaking clubs isn't something you "learn" from other people. No one wants to be responsible for their own behaviour or their kids behaviour.

People are way too judgy ...in the moment Rory got angry and tossed a club...who could possibly care or think about it for more than 30 seconds after it was over.

I could care less that he threw his club, but you can't say it's good for kids to see. Young golfing kids mimic everything young pros do...go to any range want watch how many kids hit a shot and finish their swing one handed if it's not perfect.

Couldn't.

Whoa, I don't think Rory is just part of a culture of addictive and socially acceptable 3 clubs a day throwing of clubs,

A little off with that attempt at analogy.

Good for Rors, everyone has bad days and moments of frustration. Need to get it out of your system. I bet Spieth has a bunch of sponsors that WISH he would throw a club or two.

There is no sponsor that would wish that.

Other person said Arnold was a model citizen. I don't consider any celebrity who pushed cigarettes to be a model citizen. Chunking a club is embarrassing and childish, but ultimately harmless as long as it doesn't hit another person. Jack Nicklaus recognized how inappropriate it was to smoke on the golf course and quit early in his career when he saw footage of himself doing it at the 1962 U.S. Open. As far as the big name golfers go, he has been a better role model than any of them.

Good Christ not everything is or has to be "for the good of the game/giving back/grow the game".

Parents grow the game BTW, not tour players. They might spark some interest but if parents don't participate with their kids it will largely not stick no matter who acts like a perfect gentleman on TV.

I can't wait until a player is mid hatchet strike and a caddie screams THINK OF THE CHILDREN.

Parents can indeed have a significant influence on a child's interest in any activity. If parents do not provide opportunities for their children to experience golf (or any other activity for that matter) it is not likely that the youngin' can learn to participate.

That said, anyone who thinks that professional athletes are not role models for kids is kidding themselves, I think. Ever heard of a kid pretending to be 'dad' sinking a putt to win a major, or hitting a shot to win an NBA championship, or catching a pass to win the Super Bowl? Not likely, unless the kid has a parent who plays the sport professionally.

When I was growing up, the son of two non-sports parents, I was fortunate enough to be driven to practices and taken to watch games by my parents. But my role models were the professional athletes that I grew up watching. I won numerous NBA titles, Super Bowls, and PGA titles growing up (fantasy, of course) and I was a always Jerry West, Walt Frazier, Jack Nicklaus, etc when I did it - I was never 'dad'.

My dad and mom are now my heroes (and have been for years) but growing up I idolized professional athletes and aspired to be like them. Of course, maybe I'm just weird.

Well, aren't you special...

That was NOT cool or mature and everyone reading this thread knows it.

Something is going on with that guy.

I thought I covered that? Seriously though, we are seeing the frustration of a former #1 who is getting passed by and he knows it.

It is good to know others think so too.

On the other hand, I repair golf equipment. It's nothing but money if people emulate Rory and his poor club throwing technique. ;)

My son saw Rory break his club today guys...I'm not sure he'll ever be the same. What should I tell him? It was like I witnessed the loss of innocence, he immediately went to the garage and broke every club in his bag because "Rory just did it on TV"...I just dont know what to do now.
