Tried a Push Cart for the First Time Today...

Recommended Posts

As the title says, I walked with a push cart today for the first time ever...and man, oh man, I'm a believer. As someone who only walks, these things are amazing. Even the crappy Bag Boy one I had was awesome. Total game-changer. I normally don't mind the slight fatigue from walking 18, but I felt just as good off the last tee as I did off the first. Which brings me to the all important question:

Any recommendations on durable, compact push carts? I'd like to keep my purchase around $150-$200, but really need something that folds up nicely since we live in 500 sq. feet. Bonus points for a good warranty, should anything break, and a cupholder for my coffee (possibly the most important feature for a dew-sweeper like myself). Let's see those suggestions!

So far, the Sun Mountain MC3 appears the early favorite, based on what I'm seeing online, but fire away!

+1 on the Sun Mountain MC. I've had the second version (I think) for over 6 years. One wheel bearing went last year (SM replaced for free) and I had to replace the brake this year. Other than that it's been problem free. Folds up nice and small, holds stand / cart bags really well and is easy to push. My only complaint is that the umbrella holder is fixed / static - you can't angle it to counter the horizontal rain we get here in the NE of England!

Clicgear 3.0 or 3.5 and it's not even close. Search the forums and you'll find many posts about them.

I enjoy playing much better when I can walk, but at my age I do not want to carry a bag and tweak my back/shoulders. Can't walk on all courses for several reasons, but if you find one that is a good fit for walking it is a great way to play.

Clicgear 3.5+. My Clicgear cart is 7 years old and still going strong. I have yet to need to replace any parts but parts are available for repair. Plus the number of accessories is great for personalizing it based on on and off course needs.

I'll echo the prevailing opinion, Clicgear. I got the first one and ran it pretty heavily. Now I use the 3.5. I kind of want an 8, but it's not a need quite yet.

Best thing about using a push cart though, regardless of which one you get, and aside from the immediate back relief, is using a cart bag. So much room! So much organization. But therein lies the biggest drawback--you end up way overpacking!

Anyway, welcome to the club! Carts are awesome. :good:

I've used a Sun Mountain Speedcart V1 for several years. Absolutely agree that it makes walking a lot easier. However, if I were to buy one now I'd look at either the Clicgear or the Costco cart. They both appear to fold up smaller and are every bit as sturdy.

We did get a Rovic for my youngest son. It is nice but not quite at the same level as the SM or Clicgear.

Thanks for the overwhelming response, everyone. Definitely going to look into the 3.5 after all the rave reviews. I don't think I'll be snagging a cart bag any time soon, but perhaps a little further down the road...

Anyone foresee any issues with a stand bag on the Clicgear?

Depends on the stand bag. I wouldn't even try it with a PING bag (hoofer doesn't play well at all). Something with a flatter base and smaller cutaway toward the front would be better. But even then you might have to turn it a little to the side. If you get a cart, you'll probably want to get a cart bag eventually.

FWIW, I still use stand bags for short 9s and range sessions. It's handy to have everything at hand, but sometimes it's nice to go minimalist.

I've never had a problem but if you do, there is always this to help:

On a flat course it might not make much of a difference but with a decent amount of elevation changes, the lighter weight of a carry bag can be very helpful even with a push cart.

I sometimes use my stand bag (Titleist Lightweight) on my 3.5+ and do notice some twisting and racking at times. It's usually because the bottom base of the bag isn't properly seated.

Hoofer on Clicgear with tour bag kit.

Ah, thanks for both the original and this follow-up. My Hoofer won't stay on at all--which is to say that I can't get it to. My L8 will, but I figured that was because the legs are really stiff and the setup is really light.

Well done with the whiteout. And a nod to driverwedge for the Mizzy theme with special prize going for the bag tag. If only we could order them in different colors.
