broken drill bit in iron hosel

Like an idiot, I have broken the tip of a drill bit in the hosel of a 5 iron and the little bugger will not come out.

Help and suggestions needed please.

Is there enough of the bit in there to use an Easy Out?

 

I use a cycle of cold (freezer) and torch to get the ball bearings out of old Pings. I would try that first.

What were you trying to do?

 

Clean?

Bore out?

Drill out weight from the bore?

 

If it's jist due to a tight fit, you may be able to heat the hosel so it expands a bit and smack it againt a table to knock it free. That's about the only idea I've got.

 

If the bit is big enough, you may able to buy a carbide bit, tap it, and use an EZ out?

Forget the Ez-out. You can not use one to remove a broken drill bit. I'm frankly not sure what to suggest other than maybe using a punch and trying to spin the broken bit backwards, or find a machine shop that specializes in extracting broken bolts and pay the man. It won't be cheap.

about 1/4 of an inch broke off about 3/4 inch down the hosel. I have tried everything

Try getting two thin screw drivers down the flutes. Take a Cresent wrench and snug it around the screw driver shafts and twist counter clock wise. You also might try a left handed drill bit grind the tip flat put it in the handrill and run in Reverse. All you want to do is break the broken bit tip free.

You can also take a 3/8 bolt grind out the center leaving to square post that will fit inside the flutes

Can you weld or have access to a welder? Perhaps a square fitting could be welded to the top of the drill. Back it out with a wrench. Cutting oil or wd40 would help.

Had the same thing happen with a driver head.

 

Put the head in a freezer overnight, then heated. Drill bit popped loose.

Like previous poster mentioned, thermal shock can do it. We used to dip shafts in liquid nitrogen then put bearings in a heater. Slid right on.

I did tool and die work for a long time, and let me tell ya, this is a doozie. Other than the thermal shock idea, there aren't many options. A drill bit is made from hardened tool steel, so about the only thing that will cut it is carbide, and even that won't work super well, but it has a decent chance of working. You will need to take the head to a machine shop to have them try to cut the bit out for you with a carbide end mill in a milling machine. You need absolute rigidity to do this without also breaking the carbide tool, because if you do that, your 5 iron is toast. Then the only option is to have the endmill and drill bit cut out with a ram EDM, and those aren't the most common machines, nor will it be cheap. In fact, you're probably better off just buying a new 5 iron head anyway, because most machine shops charge between $60 to $100 an hour. I'm guessing a new 5 iron won't cost you that, unless it's high-dollar or rare.

I'm also guessing you were drilling without using cutting oil and the drill bit galled and seized in the hosel bore. It's a good idea to always use lubrication on the drill bit if the bore is a tight fit with it. Then this won't happen. High-speed steel cutting tools aren't made to be run dry.

What is the make of the head? Could you buy a replacement off the bay?

One extreme option no one mentioned Nitric Acid. Couple drops down

the hosel. Will eat away enough material to loosen things up.

Some really nasty stuff, don't get it on your skin.

 

Can be found in gold testing kits.

Just an idea but if you have a good bench vice and can clamp the head securely, then take an old drill bit of similar size to the one that broke and grind a chisel point in the end. Then chuck that bad boy in your drill motor and turn it BACKWARDS and cram it down the hosel to see if you can try to get that busted bit to spin backwards. If you can get it to rotate CCW just a little it should come out.

I was a auto mechanic for years. Notuch worse than when a drill bit or an easy out breaks. Thermal shock is going to be your best bet. Good luck.
