Nike dropping golf equipment (merged)

With one main difference: the other brands do no sell components. They sell complete clubs which is their ultimate weakness.

The entire market for component clubheads is probably about the size of Nike's golf BALL business. A golf club OEM selling $1,000 sets of irons rather than $300 sets of clubheads is hardly a weakness.

So no more Nike Golf commercials. That's a shame. I always liked theirs.

Probably just still do footwear ones.

Worlds about money. It makes me sick. Greedy corporations pushing people around to line the top of the food chains pockets.

Accountants calling the shots every where. Unrealistic sales targets, corporations pushing the working people to make them richer at the expense of family time.

Nike not the only offenders. So many like that.

Up the revolution!!

Business kind of has to be about making money. And people who launch and run a business should be rewarded very well for the risk they take and the effort they put in to do it. That's very much how the economy works. Nobody's come up with a more successful strategy yet.

world needs businesses yes but most get greedy and push employees around. No morals to them.

Employees should leave for something better then. They're not slaves. That's how a free market works.
a lot of employers take advantage of loyalty as you well know. Leaving is not always easy and most times you can walk in to a worse regime.

Well people can only be pushed around if they allow themselves to be pushed around. And that's how a free market economic system works. Would you rather have a bunch of regulations to "protect" people from their own lack of inaction?

Such a bummer.. I love Nike's player irons which I game the vapor pros and there rzn black from last year is my favorite ball. I saw a set of 2-pw set of original Nike blades at a PGA store all dinged up but had no wear marks... I really regret not snagging them for $130. Hopefully I can find a set of vr pros somewhere since they always had my eye but never pulled the trigger. I hope taylormade stays afloat and would like to see them finally come back with the tour preferred line again. They also make great players clubs especially blades.

I see a lot of 'nike golf produced an inferior product' claims in this thread. Nike Golf as a business was obviously doing something wrong, but the equipment is very solid. In no way is it inferior to any brand, and that's a simple fact.

Absolutely agree with this, although to some extent I think part of Nike's problem was the stuff was just that: solid. To break through a lot of the negative perception that exists in the minds of many golf consumers, Nike needed to make a superlative product and (with perhaps a few exceptions) never quite got there. They made plenty of stuff just as good as Cally, Ping, Titleist, etc. but never really established a niche the way those brands have.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying this as a Nike hater. I'm currently playing and love my Vapor Fly driver. But, I think to the review I wrote on it shortly after putting it in the bag. It was something to the effect of "not the longest, or the straightest, or the best feel, just solid all around." A club that's above average at everything makes for a great product - but, at the same time it was never going to help Nike break through to those already skeptical before picking up a club at a demo day...

2014 VR Forged Pro Combo irons are a superlative product, as are the VR Forged wedges

I want a set now more than ever.

Have been playing them the last 15 months, best irons I've ever had.

I'll jump in too and agree that VR Forged Pro Combos are amazing irons. At one point last year, I had two sets of heads and two built sets. I like them that much. Other than the old 2011 TM MCs I am bagging right now, that is the only irons I have played this decade.

The tour issue fairway woods are fair and away the best of the best. I have the old SQII long hosels, a few VR Pro LTD protos and one of the Covert tour issue 3 woods with the deep face. All superlative fairway woods I am glad to have even if Nike has given up the ghost.

Ironically, I'm no Nike fan boy. In fact, other than golf clubs I don't own a single Nike item of any kind!

No need to be bitter. Today's athlete are the result of allot of hard work and God given talent. They are only putting those talents to use, the money is a result of the market. Fans are buying tickets at whatever price and buying jerseys among other team or league, paraphernalia. Golfers are independent contractors they are not guaranteed anything and as we all know this game can be cruel and leave us for no apparent reason. Don't worry about the money behind sports, sit back and enjoy being entertained by the worlds best athletes in their given sport.

It is funny that folks are actually worried about what Nike players will do. As pointed out earlier, the only reason they went Nike was to cash a check. They all figured they were good enough to play whatever. Some were, some weren't. They all will end up with better equipment, at least until they find someone else to pay them...

I always find it funny when people make comments like the ALL CAPS guy did. As if they wouldn't leave their current employer for another employer that is offering an increase in pay. Regardless of how the common fan looks at any athlete, it's just a job to that athlete. It puts meals on their table just like it does for the average Joe. Anyone in any athletes shoes would do the same thing and if you say you wouldn't, you're not gifted enough at anything you do to be put in that same situation to have to ever face that decision.

And I would walk out on a limb and say that everyone in the NBA can read.

In the NBA & NFL I'd question Derrick Rose, Vince Young, Antonio Cromartie, Chris Culliver, Frank Gore, and JJ Watt. Greg Oden is highly suspect as well.

Dexter Manley didn't know how to read or write during his career.

Floyd Mayweather is illiterate (boxing).

Many hockey players from Canada leave school early and play junior while finishing high school online. Grades don't have anything to do with playing. I'd guess several aren't proficient at reading or writing.

But what does this have to do with Nike leaving the golf equipment industry?

All players can read. At what level is a better question. But it doesn't matter, that's their problem. I'd trade in my literacy, for a good career and financial security. ( Athletes go broke, but they have other opportunities make money off their name.)

Back on subject, I hope they start dropping prices soon. I'd like a set of the vrs covert forged irons.

The subject is boring and it's already been covered with the first post. The other 44.9 pages is :deadhorse:

You are partly wrong. I left an employer a couple of years ago for reasons other than money; though I did get a small raise. The company I left has since offered to double the salary I was making and I have turned them down. Sometimes money simply isn't enough.

Not remotely shocked. This was being talked about at The Open in July. Nike never got their hardware right. Some good wedges and their early forged irons were superb. But their woods came out overpriced and performed poorly. The original One ball was garbage. Then they got a lot better so they brought out the RZN junk. Add in Woods on the retirement path and Wie losing her game and some of their big salaries are going nowhere. Our local stores and Pro shops got rid of Nike ages ago. It simply didn't sell and their recent colour schemes made the stuff look nasty and low end, not premium product. As for their tour staff.............some are going to be very cheap and some may end up sans sponsors if the downturn continues.

Oh man. Was out enjoying a round. Then Got the text. Gutted me. I started with a taylormade set as my first real set not knowing much about golf. They cost me $300 brand new for a 2009 set? I Always was eyeing a set of Nike clubs. I told myself I'd get Nike golf equipment one day. Just didn't want to pay the $500 or so for the covert irons at that time.

I wouldn't touch titleist. Ping. Or any other "traditional" golf equipment company's goods. I didn't care if they said its 15 yds longer. It was more expensive anyways. Tiger was the man. And I wanted to play Nike equipment.

I wanted it all. I wanted the putter. I wanted wedges. I wanted the irons. I wanted the hybrid. I wanted the fairway wood. I wanted the driver. I wanted the bag. I wanted the golf balls. I didn't care what tiger played previously. He always intrigued me but I'd say he was the biggest reason I even knew what golf was in the early 2000's I'm a self taught hack. I have really only played for a few years.

Since I started playing I've tried other equipment. Trying clubs old and new. But nothing spoke to me like the Nike golf equipment. The colors. The bold fashion statements on the apparel. The feel (relative to what I owned). The innovations.

I'm close to my goal of completing a Nike bag. Vpc (which I chose over ap1 and s55's), vf 3w. Vp driver. Nike air hybrid ll bag. Just need the hybrid and wedges. maybe I'll get that stuff for cheap now.

I'm almost heartbroken. I'll get over it. I'll wear a hole in all the clubs before I buy new ones. My short lived "club ho-ing" days are over since there'll be no more Nike equipment to ho on.

Haters are just that - haters. Glad all you haters are relishing in "Nike fanboy" sorrows. Just remember this day when there are no courses to go to because you wanted "traditional" equipment and the products that COULD have increased the numbers of golfers (or hacks like myself) don't exist. Because I am one of those that probably wouldn't have tried out the sport had it not been for Nike golf and tiger woods.

RIP Nike golf. It's been fun!

Speaking for many who saw a lot of you Tiger influenced guys come to the game?

Feel free to stop playing we won't miss you :)

Golf was not only fine before he burst on the scene it was better for those of us who'd been playing our entire lives. No more red shirt black pant guys playing the tips slapping a 115 on the card with their 5 hour round.

I'm not talking about you specifically obviously but there was definitely a segment who came to the game because of Tiger that missed some of the knowledge gained picking it up young and developing. The latest generation to come to golf, at least in my area, is a blue collar crowd that parks carts on fringes, blasts Kenny Chesney out their radio, and basically sees golf as bowling outside. They can go too :)

In fact if they go you can wear the red shirt and play the tips :)

Oh gosh...I love golf I really do, but I mostly hate "golfers". That's pretty much why the game is on decline in participation.

I hate the slow rounds and ignorance but it's like these better golfers want to keep a game all to themselves and hold onto it. I don't know. I always wanted to grow the game not restrict it. I'll play golf regardless, but it's tough to know that a lot of people won't play the game because of the attitudes of players like you.

I honestly never saw much Nike Golf equipment myself through the years. It always seemed like the people decked out head to toe in Nike Swoosh and TW clothing. Nike has and will always have a loyal brand following, but not enough in golf with Titleist, TaylorMade, Callaway, Ping, Odyssey, Scotty Cameron, B Morgan.. etc they will continue to dominate other sports though

You see a lot of Byron Morgan?

I am seeing a lot of Byrons putters recently. A lot of the Scotty Cameron following has given up on on the spacey looking putters they sell now and gone to BM (excluding 009, but they demand major $$)

My point was I almost never saw Nike equipment, occasionally here and there and like I said, it seemed to always be serious Nike brand followers decked out head to toe in the swoosh.

I think I have one Nike shirt, nothing else. Hmm I do have their tennis shoes for everyday use. I must be a fanboy lol. I like the driver irons and wedges, the fairway didn't work for me and never tried a hybrid or putter.

Funny how the guy a few posts above wanted to get rid of an those Nike wearing hacks that clog up his course. As if before Tiger all players were 10 handicap or better. If that poster gets what he wanted and all the wannabe golfers went away his course would likely close for lack of revenue. Good luck with that! :)
