Fall golf in New England

northlake

Recommended Posts

My wife and I are thinking about making a trip to New England this October. She wants to see the fall foliage. I'd like to get in a round of golf while I am there. We would be flying in and out of Boston, but traveling the countryside. Where depends on when we go.

I'd like some recommendations of good courses with reasonable green fees. And what to expect weather wise.

Thanks.

George Wright GC near South Boston would be great. There may be others, but I have only played one course in Boston.

couldn't agree more on the George Wright recommendation, it is a great spot. Donald Ross muni, tough track, although not exactly in the best shape. However, it's not near South Boston. Southie is the eastern part of Boston and Hyde Park is the western part of boston (although far more south than Southie!). Challenge is it's actually a bit tricky to get to and if you're doing a fall foliage trip, not exactly the most convenient given its city location.

There are some nice spots in the far western suburbs of Boston, where fall foliage can be good for the wife, including Shaker Hills, Red Tail, and Blackstone Nat'l. All daily fee courses that have a more private feel. The international is a private course, but typically allows some level of daily fee play.

Then you can go South Shore and do Pine Hills and Waverly Oaks - two gems (well really 3 given Pine Hills 2 courses), but south shore foliage tour tends to be later in the season and not quite as good. However, you can also hit up the cape if you head that direction - Cape Cod in the fall is fantastic. Lots of good muni and daily fee courses there worth playing.

Finally, New Hampshire and Vermont, where fall foliage is strongest have a bunch of options, but it's been so long that I can't make any recommendations there

I would agree with the recommendations and would highlight Granite Links, Pinehills, Blackstone National, Shaker Hills and Wachusett CC. GL is just outside Boston - and might have the best views of the Boston skyline anywhere - while the others are at least an hour away. You could also try the Cape for courses like Cranberry Valley and Captains. There's lots of courses and playing in the fall is terrific - it's cooler and less crowded too with great colors from the trees and you get to use 'leaf rule' for lost balls too. Have fun!!

Connecticut National in NE CT is an hour and 15 minutes from Boston, and is a great track at a great price. Plenty of trees around for leaf peeping as well.

The course I would throw out there is KettleBrook in Paxton, MA (15 mins from downtown Worcester). I played with a friend late Sept and it had THE best foliage views I ever saw on a course. I tell people THAT is the course to go to in the fall, it's a great course with reasonable rates.

How far are you willing to travel? I agree with JDL, north and west there is some great scenery and you can find some great courses as well. I would consider heading West towards Northampton (about 2 hours) and play Crumpin Fox. From there you'll be close to New Hampshire, Vermont and even upstate NY. Weather-wise this is my favorite time of year to play, maybe a light jacket, sweater or vest, days can still be warm. Night temps can drop, frost is possible and days are short, something to keep in mind.

Recently I played a few courses for a great deal. The since you are near Boston you should try Kettlebrook. I played this course a few weeks ago and it cost 39 with a cart before 10 am. They might still have that. Another course of your looking for a challenge is Cyprian Keyes. This course is a little harder than usual. I believe slope is 141 and rating is 73.5 from the blues. This course is also under 50 with a cart and very nice to look at. I guess the price is lower because there are other courses in the area that are just as nice but not as difficult I guess. Another would be Blackstone National. A little more pricy but definitely worth it. I played this course for 60 bucks with a cart and a free steak after the round, which was a very good meal by the way. This deal was only offered on Rhode Island day. Even though it is in mass. All these course are up 146 closer to Worcester. I'd say worth the ride.

Courses in MA I've played in the Fall that had good foliage: Shaker Hills, Red Tail, Butter Brook, Highfields, Shining Rock. All have significant amount of trees on the course and look great in the Fall.

Glad I found this thread. There's a handful of tracks that were mentioned that I have yet to play. Thanks everyone!

I would definitely recommend a VT trip for fall foliage time. Head up to Killington and play Green Mountain National; that place is a real gem. You could also shoot down to Woodstock, stay in the Inn and play there. Great little town, and not that far from Long Trail Brewery which is a sweet place.

The Mrs. and I are huge fans of the Long Trail brewery. Everytime we do a trip to Stowe we hit Long Trail on the way home.

Yes, fall golf in New England really can be spectacular. In late October the peak foliage will probably be from central to eastern Massachusetts, down through Rhode Island and into Connecticut. That said, I'd still vote for Crumpin Fox in Benardston, MA and also nearby Bretwood in Keene, NH. If you travel south to Connecticut you could try Connecticut National or Crumpin's sister course, Fox Hopyard.
