Who games 10+ year old irons?

I have a set of ping i5 irons. To me this was pings best iron other than the eye 2.

I am still gaming my i5 irons as I have yet to find a set to replace them, as hard as I have tried. I have tested Titleist AP2, Mizuno MP5 and 25, Callaway Apex CF16 and Apex Pro, Ping iBlade, IE and G. No appreciable difference in dispersion and distance (considering loft adjustments). I think I have worn out my pro with testing heads and shafts.

That said, I think the improvement I am looking for is the Indian, not the arrow (am I allowed to say that in today's society?)

After messing about with the Cleveland 588 MBs, I'm back to my Mizuno MP 33s. Something in the head weighting of the Clevelands make them hook for me. Not sure what it is. Even friends of mine say they go left for them as well. The Mizunos are always a nice consistent draw and good distance

Like wise! After playing nothing but Mizuno irons since about "94" I thought I'd give the 716 AP2's a go. Although, I really liked the AP2's technology, they just didn't blow me away and, for me, the turf interaction was not always consistent. Unfortunately, I sold my MP-64's during the AP2 honey moon period and was stuck trying to decide on next Mizuno set. Got a great deal on new set of MP-15's, but needed to get the KBS Tour 90 shafts replaced. Had already listed the AP2's for sell, thus creating the dilemma of what to use until MP-15's were done. The answer was my near pristine set of MP-33's that I vowed never to sell. I got these when Mizuno put them on the Signature iron lists just to get a set before they were no longer produced. At time I was playing MP-32's. Since then I have played various other MP irons and only took the 33's out of the box once or twice a year to hit at the range. This past week, while waiting for the 15's, been playing the 33's and they are still, IMO, one of the best blades ever. Lately, I've been playing the cavity backs of the MP line, and playing the 33's has me thinking of going back to blade style, especially since I only us 6-pw in irons now. From what I've seen about the MP-5's, I may give them a look see and also, take the 33's out more often.

Mine might be 6-8 years old..? Not sure. While I'm a miura enthusiast, I don't know what the releases of the clubs have been.. All I know is that they aren't a new thing, and will be around for longer than 10 years or as long as they will last.

Not that this thought only applies to the world of MB's, but I see it being quite relative to those who play them, once you've found a set you like, you game them for a longer period of time. You aren't gaming that sort of iron for any technological reason, so the chances of them being improved upon by a more recent update, or something of that nature, is slim. You most likely hit them because they line up with the thought process of wedges, where they have everything you want, are versatile, and are your tools and you can game them, and nothing about any advancements in distance, etc.. is going to change the clubs anyways.

I recently picked up a set of Wilson Staff Robert Mendrella cavity backs, not really sure the age but I'm guessing +20 years old, and I have taken them out a few times. Very solid feeling club. Having to adjust for the weaker lofts is the only issue. Great turf interaction and control. Next out, a set of Wilson Staff Ken Venturi signature irons...should be interesting.

Was plying Ping eye 2 circa 1986 for years. But as my stance/swing is more upright the orange dot wasn't citing it a longer so had to go modern. Scored some black dot Eye 2 + no + this year and couldn't be happier.

Tried the shiny new XR and Vapors. Nice clubs, longer definitely, but then I'd need more wedges to fill the gaps. Aka more $$$. And honestly the consistency wasn't enough to justify the cost difference. Sometimes older really is good enough.

See signature.

With that avatar, not many are gonna notice your signature. :pimp:

I alternate between Ping G5 (right at 10 years old) and a set of Titleist DCI O+ that are closer to 16-17 years old. Like both. Oddly I find the Titleists play better when I'm not swinging so great, the G5's play better when my swing is on.

My next set, if I get one, will be some Mizuno Mp-52's. I have a single 6 iron that is the best feeling, best swinging club I've ever hit. Very accurate as well.

2004 Bridgestone Tourstage X-Blade CB's.

Been tempted many times, but just can't bring myself to replace these just yet. Japan forged when Bridgestone's Tourstage line was at it's best.

Too bad they got rid of the Tourstage line, but some quality Endo forged Tourstage sets can be had on the bay for less than half of what they used to be (upwards of $1,400+)

If I get my index to single-digits I'm going to reward myself with a set of forged irons (and probably watch my index immediately balloon). Knowing what I'm willing to spend, that will probably mean 10+ years old... Titleist 775 is look like a good value and is right at the 10yr mark. Right now I've JUST purchased Ping i15s that I'm really liking, and they're around 7-7.5 years old already.

I am currently playing my set from 2003

Maltby CT250 11.5. This is the original version and really from 2005 or so but close enough.

Maltby Logic Tech 3w,5w,7w. Original issue from 2001-2002

Chicago Golf 944DB Wide Sole 5-SW

Wilspn TPA XVIII

My scores are basically unchanged from my Ping I15 set I normally play. I have't really lost anything with the driver from my G or G30 ones either.
