Never heard that story about Trevino.

Trevino felt that because he was Mexican, he was treated badly at Augusta National. So instead of being treated badly in the Augusta National clubhouse, he changed his shoes in his car to basically tell the higher ups at Augusta he didn't need them or their BS.

Bob Jones, Ben Hogan, Sam Snead.

Those guys were ball strikers! Take a look at the equipment they played (their blades make todays blades look like GI irons), no trackman, no gazillion shafts to choose from, no pristine course conditions. Makes one wonder what they would do with todays equipment/ball/courses.

On another note, I would like to play with Jones, Snead, and Harvey Ward.

Old Tom Morris, Toney Penna, John Reuter jr and Karsten Solheim, breakfast, 9 holes, lunch, 9 holes more , dinner.Would need interpreter and tape recorder.

All WRX classic members allowed to ask questions walking course and attending dinner after.

Next day would be in a workshop and watch each one build a club, it might need more days which have been approved by me to repeat as needed

Tim-

Do you have the "Putter Kings" article from the Golf Digest around 1970?

The one with John Reuter Jr., and Karsten Solheim?

The two photos featured both of them holding their different putter creations.

Let me know....

Isao aoki.... Just watched some of the 1980 us open and was alway fascinated on how he played the game. Remember him playing in the UK a number of times for the top events, bet he's good fun to have in a 4 ball

And the extreme toe up on the putter. Most gurus today would say "ohhhh that is just not proper" but if you look closely you will see his hands are completely relaxed. Man o Man could he putt!!! IMHO he was as good of a putter as Crenshaw or Stockton for that matter

Not just toe-up on the putter, but completely old-school (old-skewl?) with his wristy putting stroke. Plus, he was, and still is, a fantastic bunker player. And a good commentator as well.

Fantastic ball striker too....loved him hitting those fairway woods with hardly any follow through!

How about the great amateurs? Bobby Jones, Francis Ouimet, Harvey Ward come to mind.

Hard to think of any great modern players who don't want to turn pro.

And Chick Evans....?????

(From Wikipedia)

Charles E. "Chick" Evans, Jr. (July 18, 1890 – November 6, 1979) was an American amateur golfer of the 1910s and 1920s. Evans, who won the 1910 Western Open, became the first amateur to win both the U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur in one year, a feat he achieved in 1916. Evans won the U.S. Amateur again in 1920, and was runner-up three times. Selected to the Walker Cup team in 1922, 1924, and 1928, he competed in a record 50 consecutive U.S. Amateurs in his long career. Evans achieved all of this while carrying only seven hickory-shafted clubs.

In addition to his golf career, Evans is known for founding the Evans Scholars Foundation, which provides a college scholarship for qualified caddies.

In 1960, Evans was voted the Bob Jones Award, the highest honor given by the United States Golf Association in recognition of distinguished sportsmanship in golf. He is a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame.

After his wins in 1916, Evans was given several thousand dollars in royalties for recording golf instructions for the Brunswick Record Company, and in 1921 he received royalties from a golf book.[5] If he had accepted this money Evans would have lost his amateur status. His mother suggested that he put the money to good use by sponsoring a scholarship fund for caddies.

Evans, who was unable to finish his own matriculation at Northwestern University, recalled that his mother "wouldn't think of accepting my money unless we could arrange it to be trusted to furnish educations for deserving qualified caddies." He said his mother "pointed out that the money came from golf and thus should go back into golf -- It was all her dream -- her idea."

Evans went to the Western Golf Association (WGA), an organization that ran the golf championships in the Midwest, to get their support for his scholarship. By 1930, the Evans Scholars Foundation had formed[3] and two caddies, Harold Fink and Jim McGinnis, were named the first two Evans Scholars.

Chick Evans' long friendship with Chicago tax attorney, Carleton Blunt, had proved to be the catalyst for launching the Evans Scholars Foundation. Blunt, an avid golfer and philanthropist, supported Evans' vision for helping caddies attend colleges and universities across the country by raising the necessary funds for decades.

The criteria used to choose the recipients were scholarship, fellowship and leadership. Since that time, over 9,800 caddies have become Evans Scholars and attained college educations. The Evans scholarship program continues today as the largest scholarship organization in sports and the largest privately funded scholarship program in the United States.

Evans Scholarship houses exist at the following Universities: University of Colorado, University of Illinois, Northwestern University, Marquette University, University of Wisconsin, Purdue University, Ohio State University, Northern Illinois University, University of Missouri, Indiana University, University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Miami University and the University of Minnesota.

On February 19, 2014 the Evans Scholars Foundation announced their plans to build a new chapter house at the University of Oregon. It is the first new Scholarship House in 27 years.[6] In addition to those universities at which houses exist, scholarship recipients attend several other universities around the country. More than 800 caddies currently attend college on an Evans Scholarship.

As a former "Evans Scholar"...I gotta say, this is my main man

Favorite old time golfer - Emilio "Chico" Miartuz. Best ball striking I have ever seen. Watched him strike balls from under a Banyan tree off the dirt with a driver when he was 60. A pleasure to watch. Had a great short game and sand game. Designed putters and wedges and irons under the Tomahawk name. He played the tour during the mid 1950's to early 1960's until an injury to his right hand where they had to cut his tendons shortened his golf career. Had a short fuse and was considered to be one of the hotheads on the tour such as Tommy Bolt. This I can vouch for since I have seen it first hand. His motion was very similar to Sneads. I had the pleasure of playing with him at Bayshore Golf Course on Miami Beach where he was the pro for many years. Never took a divot always would sweep the ball off the grass. As good as a ball striker as he was, he had the personality to match it. RIP my friend
