Had a fitting today and hit the 765 and Callaway Steelhead XR Pro (more foregiving) the best. Inclined to go Srixon. Little nervous they are too much club for me (15 index) but I think they are more a club I can grow into compared to the XR Pro. Fitted w/ C-Taper Lite X shaft. I tried the 565 but numbers werent as good.

I am a little surprised that a 15 Index is hitting the Z765 better than a way more forgiving club like the Z565 but I'll take your word for it because when I was a higher handicap I hated chunkier clubs especially wide soled clubs. Maybe spend some cash on a series of lesson and get the club face and impact fixed and you can bring your index down.

As a fitter and a person whose handicap fluctuates regularly, I can tell you that you can't be more wrong in assuming that a 15 cap would hit a club that should be more forgiving better than a club designed to be more demanding. People's handicaps are what they are based on a few factors. Some people can absolutely stripe (almost) whatever iron you give them, but their short-game sucks. Or maybe they can bomb the ball off the tee, but their iron game is horrible. Or maybe they could do like i did this past Sunday and hit 9 greens in regulation and 3-putt 8 of them. SMH at that mess!

Two things to think about...what the players sees as the best club for them when they look down at their club is very important. Secondly, when they hit the club and it feels like they want it, then that is just as important. As long as they hit the club consistently and they are good with the results, it doesn't matter if their final choice looks like a shovel or butterknife. Didn't mean to pick on your post, I just wanted to hopefully enlighten your thinking.

I strike the ball better than most 15s. My problem is the driver and long clubs - wildly inconsistent which leaves me in horrible positions.

My 1st 3 years playing the game I actually hit a Mizuno Tzoid Comp EZ 2 Irion because my driver was really bad.

I'm sure you will get to a single digit with some hard work.

I am still waiting on my set. As of Friday it will be 7 weeks since I placed the order. Going to call and see if they hAve any clue when custom heads will be back in stock

7 weeks... Snap! What sort of custom heads?

Custom ordered specs on clubs. So they may not be custom heads. And Srixon now is claiming mid May before anything is in.

As in lie, loft, etc?

If so that seems like an awfully long wait time. I've ordered custom specs in that regard twice (and a buddy of mine once) and it's usually been around two weeks from order to doorstep.

What shafts did you get?

i cant say enough great things about my 765/565 combo set, they are just perfect with modus 105

When you were demo'ing, did you notice a difference between the Modus 120 and the 105? Can you try and explain?

I hit these yesterday. There was a noticeably difference between the two for me. After hitting a dozen balls with the 120, the 105 did not feel good at all. Felt very light at address and throughout the swing, which i did not like. The fact the 120-S is a similar weight to my current set (DG Pro r300) may have biased me to that feel.

As a general note, I was astounded with the difference in spin rates and distance I was getting with the different shafts I tried. The Modus 120-S was super low spin (sub 3k with 7i) with a high flight. A full club longer than my current irons and the others I tried (Wilson V6, Z565 (with nippon 950).

I purchased the z765 off the rack with the 120-S.

The one shaft I never demo'd with the 765s was the 105. That said, I'm super happy with the 120s. They are softer than my old standby (S300/S400) but way smoother, easier to flight and generally lower spinning and launching. As I rave about them I realize, it's time to move on and stop wondering about the 105s.

I agree with these thoughts that the shafts are very different. No doubt the 105 will suit many golfers but a difference for me was that couldn't stop hitting low on the face with them compared to the 120. I didn't actually check the spin with them over the 120 as the 120 spin was good but the biggest difference was the contact dispersion on the face. The 7 iron spin was around 6,800 which was 200 Rpm lower than the DG AMT that I had in my Ap2. I love these clubs and at impact the 120 has the most pure sensation I think I have felt with a golf club.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have been in the market for new irons for quite some time. After demo'ing lots I decided to head to Club Champion for a fitting. I went in with an open mind as I am a fanboy to nobody. I really like my MP64's but they are getting quite worn and I figured I could use a lighter, possibly weaker, shaft. Club Champion was awesome BTW, lots of OEMs, tons of shaft options, and a knowledgeable fitter. The best shaft for me was the Project X LZ 6.0. We then moved on to heads and the 765 was the clear winner. I will say that the rounded toe took a bit of getting used to but after I hit them for awhile I quickly fell in love. Behind was the Taylormade 770 (nice head shape not as much feel), the Ping i200 (little large head shape, horrible feel, I had no idea where on the face impact was) and Titleist AP2's (not a fan of the head shape). Although I have resigned to the fact, for me, that nothing will feel as good as my MP64's, the 765's feel very good, better than anything else on today's market IMO. Not to mention a little more forgiveness than my Mizuno's is probably a good thing. 765's gave me great numbers and the best part is the no upcharge shaft offerings. No, I didn't order from Club Champion they want a pretty penny. I leave it up to Srixon to get the specs right, if not close, then my local club builder can tweak if need be. The fitter said they have had really good success fitting people into 765's and 565's. I'm ordering tomorrow. Now the hardest part, the wait!

Curiosity got the better of me so I picked up a set of 765s in excellent condition for a great price off Ebay. They came with DG S300 (not good shafts for me) so I switched them out for a set of Modus 120X I had in my shop. I'm going to take them out tomorrow for a test drive.

I did try them with the S300 but didn't care for the shafts (never have). The irons look great and feel great but they look rather big to me, especially when compared to the 2013 X-Forged and 2016 Apex Pros I normally play, more so in the short irons than long irons. They are more similar in size to the original Apex or Apex CF16.

I have a pretty smooth transition and don't load the club a whole lot. Average carry for all the heads I hit was 180 and with the 765 it was 184. With my MP64 it was 181, that's with a 6 iron.

Interesting. I was only a mph or two higher and 6.5 was recommended.

My SS was 90-91 and was fitted for the LZ 6.0's but I liked the feel and dispersion of the 6.5's. I compromised and ordered the 6.5's soft stepped once. My mizuno numbers were a very consistent 6455, so a fairly smooth transition.

I also went back and forth between the CTaper lites in an x-flex. Was actually very close for me but my fitter thought the performance of the LZ's would shine in the scoring irons. We'll see haha...

For those considering 745 vs 765:

I bought a used set of 745's (5-PW) on the classifieds with modus 125s shafts. These feel awesome, look great, and I cant believe how the ball seems to just keep carrying. About a club longer than my 714 AP2's with S300 shafts.

Anyhow, I ended up grabbing a 3 and 4 iron in the 765's to complete the set, same modus shafts. I cant hit these things, they wont get off the ground, and the sound and feel is not the same as the 745's. I have not had issues hitting 3/4 irons off the gound in the past, even with my old MP-32's. I know they are legit since i went through my proshop to order them. Not sure if the forging process or steel used is different, but I much prefer the sound, feel, and performance of the 745's. Especially since they are cheaper, I would go with the 45' line.
